As for Dack Len, a thing to keep in mind about the setting is that humans aren't quite a space faring civilization as of now. The people on Earth were able to build rocket ships with cryo pods in them to send off to an alien world, but FTL travel hasn't been invented yet, and even rather rich people in this world can't afford to build a spacecraft.
The appearance of the colony?

It looks like a NASA-themed trailer park/shantytown, (which is technically what it is). It was constructed by dropping a daisy cutter into a forest (they checked for sentient organisms first, don't worry), and then having people enter pods to land onto the crater. The landing modules were then disassembled and turned into "Housing Cubicles". Living conditions are on par with long-term RV camping. Food and water are currently rationed, but are usually present. In good times, you'll see flea markets show up selling home made goods, with people playing instruments in the street.

If all goes well, Zion will strike it rich and become a bit more suburban (and then regular-urban) in its appearance.
I like Astra, but I'd even go a step further and have the law be that it can't look perfectly human (though you can just have something simple distinguishing it as a machine. It's a safety regulation, basically).

Also, what does Berk do? Is he going to be making lots of appearances? What's their relationship?
You can have as many characters as you want, don't worry.
Hm, could you make the turret's machine gun just be a submachine gun? Like...a low-cal SMG?
Name: Captain Aaron Hardson
Species: Human
Age: 65
Appearance: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_WM96V-rih1c/R_2vv5lJ49I/AAAAAAAAAT0/SeoSaz3hsgY/s1600-h/William_Adama.jpg
Gender: Male
Occupation: Captain
Tools/Weapons: He has a chair and an intercom. From there, he can shout orders at us, giving us impeccable advice like "Run!" or "Don't trust that alien with the creepy human skull fetish" or such genius as "Don't let that giant scorpion see you!"
Skills/Powers: Despite my joke above, he's actually a fairly competent leader and tactician, with a degree in military science. Plus, people around town really respect this guy, so order is kept within the civilian population.
Bio: He was previously in patrol (as a bodyguard to the old captain), when the place was attacked by very heavily armed gangsters. An RPG exploded inside the command center, which killed the old captain and severely injured him. He has been Zion's leader ever since.
So far so good for Zhum, but is he going to ride anything?

I assume something of an Auto-turret for a Combat Engineer would be a no-go then?

No, a turret would be fine, depending on how powerful the gun is (if it's like...a low-cal SMG, that'd be fine).
Name: Lewis Campbell
Species: Human
Age: 22
Appearance:

Gender: Male
Occupation: Security
Tools/Weapons: Submachine Gun with spike bayonet, Patrol Armor
Skills/Powers: Marsmanship, Stealth
Bio: He was the son of the previous captain, who was killed in by a local gang's RPGs. He signed up with the Marine's to follow in his father's footsteps, but was denied. So, he decided to sign up for Patrol, instead. He has only recently started to come out of his father's shadow and cast his own. He's relatively well-known among the colony, if only because he gets out and around a lot.
As for Chen:
All scientists in this RP can double as field scientists (so they're able to go on expeditions and such along with the rest of the team).
If your character specializes in geology, they're allowed to carry some very small mining equipment of sorts. Also, since your character is a research bot, shouldn't she have a scanning device a la a tricorder or something?
To clarify: Can your character only talk when it's plugged in?
