Turning his walk into a light jog, Robert followed Hadrian's trail towards Hank. The two men managed to catch up to the shovel-wielding man only to find themselves in yet another possibly fatal predicament. Meters ahead grew a group of walkers, moving slowly as they do, but gnawing at the man that approached them - Wayne. Yet another battle that could have been dismissed if it had not been for Wayne's desire to test his own luck. Down the road was also a newcomer, the silhouette of a woman for sure, but from the distance, Robert couldn't put a name to the face - not that he could even if he saw her properly. "Is she with you two?" Robert asked Hank, unsure if there were more surprises in store for the survivors.

Robert didn't really questions the events that unfolded this very day. Were they strange? Of course. But for some reason strange seemed to be the new normal in this day in age. It was as though the true colors of people, the environment and everything in between finally flourished into something bigger. Robert saw this 'change' as an act of God - it's purpose yet unknown, but it's purpose surely great despite it not seeming so. He himself had changed the man he once thought he was. He was set on a path to help people so that the universe would reward him with the safekeeping of his wife. Give and the universe will return.

"Wayne's going to needs us..." Robert then exclaimed, trying to set urgency to the matter at hand. "I'll take care of the girl and join you when she is safe. May God bless you both." With that said, he started to jog once more - preparing himself mentally for the roadblock ahead. His strategy was to first ensure the safety of the woman - make sure she did not decide to join the fight without need - and then help Hadrian and the others as any other option was now improbable.

It was an understatement to say that Hadrian’s sudden outburst took Robert by surprise. In reality, it scared the shit out of him. The man nearly tripped over his own two feet from stopping so abruptly. He even found himself raising his hands in defense - more of a natural reaction than one gained through self defense training. What stopped Robert from asking questions was Hadrian’s immediate composure after yelling. He looked utterly disappointed for an odd reason, as though the short outburst was just a hint of a bigger issue stocked and hidden within the soldier - but his pride his that almost instantly. Robert truly did care about Hadrian, but as the man moved on with the conversation it was clear it was not the right time to press for the truth.

Out of respect, Robert carried on - matching Hadrian’s rhythm and continuing down the road. He looked at the surroundings to ensure walkers didn’t attract to the sound. Thus far everything appeared safe. Moving forward, Hadrian revealed a little bit more about himself - which made Robert react warmly. It was then that Hadrian brought forth a realization that Robert himself had missed - the environmental beauty of the ‘fallen’ world.

Looking at their surroundings, Robert took it all in for a second. The gentle breeze, the vibrant colors of the life that carried on around them. Nature and the environment had suffered for centuries at the hands of man. Unfortunately political parties and men of power never really cared enough to make a much needed change. The Bible spoke of of life on earth, but Robert did not become truly invested until late. His wife on the other hand would always say ‘you better not throw those water bottles in the trash now, recycle recycle recycle’. Now that everything had changed, nature and it’s beauty flourished. It honestly was a spectacle, one Robert had never seen in the city. “Yea....it is beautiful. I guess I missed it too.

The silence was serene, but at this point in time brought forth suspicion. Robert looked at Hadrian for a second with a raised brow, then back up the road to only see Hank’s back. “He stopped singing...” Robert stated nervously, Wayne nowhere in sight.

Ranch huh? I thought you more of a cheese man,” Robert joked, trying to lighten up the stillness in Hadrian’s tone while putting away the food once again. Sure, they were strangers but the circumstances they shared were at least one indication of a possible friendship - especially when put in contrast with the heathens up the road, singing and cursing like there was nontomorrow. However, Robert did always forget that his faith was his alone, others experienced it differently and some were absent the opportunity to embrace it.

I’ve come across a fair share of bad ‘hombres’ in my travels. But....I can’t say I would’nt have helped each one of them if the opportunity arose. I think I come across people for a reason. I may not like them at first (he said while looking at Hank and Wayne), I may not trust them at first, but in the end, it all works out. It always does. Either we end up helping each other, getting through this world together, or we simply go our different ways. And sometimes we help each other go in different directions,” he expressed with a smile, looking at thebroad beneath him as he walked.

Robert’s ideology was a simple one, and he expressed it firsthand. At first, Robert prioritized finding his wife. However, he has undergone many tribulations when he distanced himself from those in need, actually felt further away from not only his wife, but from himself. When he did push to help, he found a sense of peace and purpose. There was no science behind it - at least he refuses to believe that - but it all came down to faith. So if he is able to help, Robert will.

I’ve been meaning to ask you something. I hope I’m not overstepping, but the sword the shield, the whole Roman thing, why? What does it mean to you?” He asked Hadrian without a hint of playfulness. If he didn’t trust him, it was time to build that trust. And it started by getting to know him.

Facing he facts headfirst was the only way to get through disappointment quickly. However disappointment never triumphed Robert’s optimism. “Yea, we’ll find another,” he agreed with Hadrian after learning the truck would no longer be of service. He paid no mind to Hank’s nicknaming and sarcasm, it was clear he cared little to none about their preferences or feelings. Before Robert could get another word out, Hank started following his lost friend, moving down the road with purpose.

The two men really struck Robert as odd. They didn’t seem to care about their lives, heading straight forward without a game plan. However, that oddity - at times - could be a hint of faith. Where these men simply barbaric or did they truly believe in something far greater than themselves?

Moving forward, Robert turned towards Hadrian. “We have to move. I don’t know what you’re looking for out here, but I think sticking together for now is our best shot,” he stated. Despite their differences, it was true that with numbers the odds of survival increased drastically. It was unfortunate however that their numbers increased with the addition of two....complicated persons. Furthermore, there was still a lack of trust, but people were people, and helping one another was what God would want.

Robert took to the road, settling alongside Hadrian at a steady pace - keeping Hank in clear sight. He dug in his pack, once again removing two bags of chips. “Let’s try this again, Ranch or Cheese?” He asked Hadrian, extending both bags towards the man as they walked. After all that fighting he was certain Hadrian could not refuse.

The situation grew calm when the last walker was put to rest. The silence returned, but a dark energybstill lingered. Robert could not find comfort around the two heathens, their constant bickering and cursing didn’t sit well with him. Their character surprised Robert from the start and irritated his calm demeanor more than any survivor had in the past. However, he would not put his personal feelings before his faith and instead see where his journey would head next.

As Hadrian approached, Robert moved closer to the man - answering his questions in confidence. He nodded to let Hadrian know he was physically sound, not a scratch on him from the fight that took place seconds ago. “I don’t think we have a choice,” he said truthfully, knowing that Hank and Wayne were headed in the same direction as them by the nose of their truck. “Just stay alert,” Robert asserted, watching Hank remove the guns from the rundown vehicle.

His name is Hadrian,” Robert interrupted, no longer accepting the constant mockery. He couldn’t understand why the two lacked civility - was it their lack of faith in something greater than themselves?

Robert then decided to approach the truck as he put his weapon away. “You don’t think it’s reparable? he asked Hank, hoping it could be salvaged - despite Hanks certainty that it was a goner. Sometimes all it took was a second look.

The constant disrespect displayed by the two heathens was slowly pushing Robert’s buttons. The frustration clearly overcast his ability to hide feelings under tougher skin. For a man so devoted to God and his teachings, the art of peace was clearly being tested. It hurt even more to hear his own comrade yell at him in less than a friendly tone.

Without a word, Robert moved around the battleground - allowing the others to dive hot-headeadly into the fight. Robert’s tactics were different, allowing the walkers to do the attacking and countering with his own strikes when the chance presented itself. He whistled to a walker to call its attention, letting the dead man limp towards him. Upon finding the range, Robert took a quick step to his right and came crashing into the dead's skull with his dowel. The walker went limp and fell into the dirt face first and motionless. As another approached he mimicked his first action, allowing the walker to approach then attacking at the right moment - precision stricking.

Robert took no satisfaction in killing the unfortunate. These people had suffered enough and we’re mocked for their inability to truly be free - condemned to a hollowed rotten body that no longer resembled who they once were. Deep down, Robert still believed things would go back to how they once were, or even better than before. He had faith that God would not give up on them, that’s why they were still breathing. It was clear not many of those around him

Anyway, what seemed to be a standard battle between men and dead soon took a drastic undertone when Wayne opened fire. The gunshots spiked Robert’s nerves, forcing his shoulders to his earlobes. He let out a sigh of frustration. What the heck was this guy thinking?

I think we need to go....now,” Robert stated loudly to everyone. His eyes darted around, looking for walkers to join the fray. The gunshots would prove more dangerous than helpful soon and Robert did not want to be present when the time came.

After her question, Preslee continued to trail Erica. The uncertanty of what awaited them down the road did not fall easy on Preslee’s shoulders. Preslee was not one to believe in signs, but the horde of walkers stuck in the swamps could not have been a good one if any. Watching those walkers gnaw and reach for their flesh made the blonde very uneasy and unsure if she wanted to continue.

Then another sign. A walker in eyesight just down the road. “Look out,” Preslee said alertedly, making sure Erica had seen it too. However, as the two continued forward Preslee started to feel dizzy. Her feet stumbled a bit underneath her and she pivoted right towards the trees.

Fortunately she was able to regain her balance before falling. She had had very little to eat and drink so fatigue and vertigo was surely a factor. She started feeling like shit, hopefully it was nothing serious. “I should have ate the bugs,” he said under her breath.

A light breeze traveled through Okefenokee Swamp, reaching Robert as he closed the distance between himself and the peculiar commuters. He vaguely shivered as his body accustomed to the slight change in temperature, but the humidity still struck his sweat glands ruining his favorite shirt. As clouds gathered above, the survivors grew wary of each other. Robert watched as they mocked Hadrian's attire, painting a clear picture of their character. Stepping forward, Robert joined Hadrian's side - expressing his disdain for the strangers through lack of eye contact. Right as he planned to speak his mind, the dammed escaped the swamp's skookum house. Their moans grew louder as they cruised through the dirt road and looked to feast.

"We need to get out of here," Robert told Hadrian before one of the other men rushed forth into the fray. Robert's eyes widened in fear for the man's life, quickly turning towards Hank to see if he would do something about his lunatic partner. "No! We don't need to fight them!" he called out to Wayne, hoping his words would get through the man's seeming inability to cope with reality. He watched Wayne take down one of the walkers, but the numbers were not in his favor.

He looked back at Hadrian before grunting in frustration. "We need to help him..." he said bluntly, knowing the right thing to do would endanger them both. This had not been the first time Robert encountered people with the absence of vigilance. He's had to bail out many individuals who put themselves in inessential danger and this was no different. Therefore, Robert gave a quick prayer, prepared his wooden dowel and started into the fray. "Lord give me your strength."

Preslee peeked into the can of slimy critters and was forced to look away. Her acute hate for insects almost made her throw up when imagining the possiblity of eating them. She didn't say a damn word as she tried to keep whatever was left in her stomach from flowing upwards. After taking a necessary gulp, she took a deep breath and continued looking through the cabin. Unfortunately there wasn't anything worth their time, probably because the place appeared previously pillaged.

When the fain noise from outside stopped, Erica expressed her desire to keep moving - find out what was out there. Preslee on the other hand did not want to go. Despite the lack of supplies, the camp was whole. The windows weren't broken and the door hinges worked. They were also in the woods, so there had to be wildlife. All they would have to do is get rid of the walkers in the area and everything would work out just the same.

However, the realization hit as soon as Erica walked out of the cabin. Being alone was worse than being safe. Preslee found herself following suit. Erica was a strong female and seemed to understand the world they were in just a little bit more than Preslee. A leader like her could be the answer to a world like this. "What do you think is up ahead?"

The fall took Robert by surprise. The soldier, along with all of his possessions dropped directly in Robert's path - forcing an unnatural reaction. Unfortunately, swiftness was not one of Robert's acquired skills. The older man attempted to jump over Hadrian as he fell, but his knees were NOT the same as they were 20 years ago. One of Robert's boots caught Hadrian's attire, forcing the man forward as though someone had pushed him from behind. Stumbling, Robert moved his feet rapidly - forcing them to catch up with his pivoting shoulders. It was as though the dirt beneath him had a gravitational pull on his big head. His hands juggled his wooden dowel, attempting to catch it in mid-air - regrettably, he'd never played football or any other sport that involved catching, so the task appeared impossible.

The stooge didn't last long as the lone walker, now nicknamed Splitty, decided to be the hurdle in Robert's lane. A second before impact, Robert managed to grip his weapon momentarily and thrust his dowel through Splitty's eye. The weight of the crash was Robert's return to balance, stopping and regaining his footing upon meeting the unmovable force. However, the day's unpleasantness was just beginning as Splitty split at the waste. The impact had shoved Splitty's upper body backwards. Guts and insides spilling all over Robert's boots. Robert looked down to notice he had stepped on Splitty's toes, holding the dead legs in place as the the remainder of the body tumbled to the ground and emitted a putrid smell.

Robert sighed and bowed his head, shaking it left and right as he doubted the realization that all that had really happened. He looked back at Hadrian with that same facial expression. "Hmm," he muttered in disbelief as he stepped off of Splitty's feet, allowing the reunion of the walker's body. Robert scratched the back of his head questioning the reality of the situation - it all seemed too foolish to have really occurred, but then again the dead were walking. He shook his head again and removed his dowel from Splitty's motionless skull. Returning to Hadrian's side, he extended his hand to help the man back up. "C'mon, before we lose them or ourselves," he joked, still not accepting the events that just unfolded or simply being embarrassed by their performance.

Managing to finally get all Hadrian's belonging back in his bag, Robert took to the trail once again. He heard the uproar of moans coming from the waters - a clear message that the dead were eager to eat. He then heard the voices that came from the truck at eyesight, seeing two moving silhouettes, but unable to put a face on either. Robert hurried forward - again going against Hadrian's desire for caution. "Hey mister! Need a hand?! We got four!" Robert called out, attempting to get the attention of what he most definitely believed to be a man. "I've got food."

The two survivors continued down the abandoned road, walking over leaves that fell from lonesome trees. The surroundings were still and quiet, even in the presence of lost souls consigned to oblivion. They drowned in waters once brimful with life and beauty - now smothered in death. However, a conversation sparked some positivity when Hadrian broke his vow of silence and revealed a little bit about himself to Robert. Despite being truths of evil men and their horrific actions, Robert was glad to see Hadrian was still human inside. "I'm glad we met Hadrian. The people we meet, the love that we share with them and our faith is what defines us. When we let our circumstances change who we are, that's when we stray from the path. You're a good man," Robert responded, believing in his core that people were good - that if given the opportunity, they could display that righteousness and pay it forward in the eyes of their Lord and Savior.

Anyway, their kind exchange came to an end as the soldier entered a mode of defense. Robert's act of kindness - a friendly offering of food - was blocked by what Hadrian labeled imminent danger. Robert could hear the truck clearly now, but his visibility of the vehicle was obstructed by the tree line and his age. As Robert put away the food, he became worried by Hadrian's call to action. The word 'chase' might have derived from his necessity to act, but it was surely out of character. It could have also been a lack of understanding between the two men, but Robert interpreted his words as assault.

"They may need our help..." Robert asserted, holding optimism over fear yet again. He moved around Hadrian to take the lead and continue towards the vehicle ahead. He could see the silhouette of a single lost soul, but his eyes were fixed on the possibility of finding someone alive - his wife even. He picked up his pace despite Hadrian's obvious desire for stealth and moved at a much quicker pace. He removed his round dowel from his backpack's cup holder and prepared himself in case of an emergency. "Know this Hadrian, the most selfless thing we can do in this world is to help someone else. I think that's my purpose here. I hope you can understand that."
