@LeeRoy Umbraxis killed hundreds of people and two city level heroes before he was 'defeated.' That would matter in-universe, even if they were NPCs.

Nightmare has successfully defeated multiple player-controlled heroes and continues to allude capture, murdering dozens as he goes.

Elaboration. Nightmare has so far faced off against. STRIKE Forces(when Anderson was not an NPC), Archangel, The Iron Knight, and Icon. None of which have been a defeat for him as his band has only grown larger and bolder over time. It's a build up. Plus he's killed a hell of a lot. lol
Continuing with my previous point. Look towards Umbraxis, the current most powerful Villain. Obviously scary and intimidating, but what sum total did he actually do to hurt our heroes? Umbraxis showed up, got his cosmic buttocks squarely kicked, returned to space where he is currently being shot with rays of light and put through an existential crisis.

Where in that does fear take hold? He's the most powerful opponent yet, and he's already been defeated and is stood still in a cosmic standoff.

It's like Galactus compared to Ozymandias.

Galactus shows up, looks really spooky for a bit, then concurrently fucks off after some artifact shows up to prove to be dangerous.

Ozymandias won 35 minutes before you even arrived.

A villain compared to a real villain.

You have to have some sort of impact in the world that you're in, otherwise you're just another common thug who roughs people up in the street. Maybe a little more fancy than common thugs, but still just the same.

NPC deaths hold no real ground, since they're just NPCs. Unless you have time to make some formative emotional connection between them and the player, nobody is going to miss them.

See my point?

There are a number of things wrong with this post. Most of which I will leave to the gms to handle since it is not my job but I will make a point of something.

In terms of sheer power I believe it is actually a tie between Mercy and Umbraxis as they are equal and opposite forces. Who I might note are both Villains not heroes.
I will point out that the good doctor does have a sheet.
Yes, that was a long time ago. On a site far, far away. Also, my apologies to Raptorman, we were in the middle of something when my power went out last night.

No worries, we'll just have to finish it up when we both are around.
Monster Rancher was a good one. I very rarely see it mentioned though
Time to stop this guys.

Sorry about calling her Ms. America. Just a slip of the tongue (or rather fings). Lady Liberty. Got it down now.

First time I ever heard anything about this. I don't really buy the argument that the Marvel and DC characters would not exist as fictional characters because people would want the "real deal". We have movies about fictional presidents when we still have real ones. We still have movies about fictional soldiers when we still have real soldiers. We still have media about fictional athletes when we have real athletes. On the top of my head (although if you can think of an example, please enlighten me), I cannot think of a real-life example equivalent to what you are proposing.

Sure, fictional accounts of the "real" superheroes in this universe might have more popularity. However, another thing that needs to be kept in mind is that a majority of the characters in this roleplay have not been superheroes for that long. Other than the WWII heroes, none of the other characters would really have an affect on whether or not Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, and the rest exist. Honestly, I think Marvel and DC would be trying to buy up the rights to our characters in the game (especially Icon by DC).

Look, I for one would greatly appreciate a decrease in the amount to which you in particular reference the marvel and dc comics. I will not go so far as to demand it stop. But I would at least like for there the whole history thing that I brought to the game when the game started to at least matter and have had an effect on things. Which I would think is entirely reasonable.

I have at every turn avoided mentioning comic books or referencing them IC with the very small exception of talking about a few things related to the WW2 era people. My preference would be to go with what Eddie was suggesting since his idea seemed like a compromise that lets us both to some degree be happy. You get to have a few references, and I don't feel like the world is being compromised.
Okay, cool. So do we go about building sheets or is that not a thing yet?
@Raptorman You see I kinda agree with you, I suggested the possibility for there to be an in IC Comic House called Night Hound comics. That would publish Heroes as they gained popularity.

And while I don't see the problem with there being Spider Man Comics, I don't think DC or Marvel should be as gigantic as they are in our Universe. We already have Superheroes darting about so they become less fiction and more fact, making them less of an escape from our daily lives. Now a Fantastical Spider Man set in a world of might and magic could be something the average citizens goes for. Placing Superheroes in straight up fantasy settings or high science fiction. That I could see as a more believable approach.

I think Marvel and DC would absolutely exist; they would just be far less popular since they're selling a "fake" version of something people can get every day. I also don't think in-universe comics of this world's contemporary heroes would be terribly popular, either, since they're guilty of the same thing. If I'm an Icon fanboy, maybe I want to read Icon comics, but if I'm just an average Joe who loves Icon then I only care about his real adventures. Comics based on real world heroes probably feel trite and cash-grabby to most people.

EDIT: However, comics of Lady Liberty's WWII adventures? Those I could see being popular, since so much time has passed and those adventures have ascended to legend status.

Well I think you both are on the right track and that makes sense. :)
And what era is it set in?
