Name: Kalani Uwato
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Appearance:
Standing at an average 5 foot 6 inches, and weighing in at a healthy 124 pounds,
Kalani considers herself to be at her physical peak. Years of training has shaped her body into an athletic form giving her slender body an hourglass shape and a muscular tone. Hailing from the Northern WaterTribe she was born with the traditional tanned skin, and bright cerulean orbs, however her travels have made her complexion a deep olive brown. With an oval shaped face, high cheekbones, full lips, and a sharp lidded orbs, Kalani has a rather alluring appearance. Long, thick ebony locks sit atop her head which she typically keeps tamed in two long braids with a headband around her forehead. Her style is a hard mix of form fitting to loose, baggy clothing, however it all depends on what she's comfortable with that day. Here are examples
of her style.
Abilities:
WaterBending & Combat:
Like her parents before her, and their parents before them and so on, Kalani had shown an affinity for water bending at a young age. Trained by her mother in the beginning, she was taught the basics of the basics—from the origins of her bending and tribe, meditation techniques to control and train her chi, to simple techniques and maneuvers. As she aged and showed more potential, she eventually caught the interest of her Grandfather, Master Iaone Uwato. Training under her him as his protege, she was simultaneously taught the aggressive, offensive technique of Southern WaterStyle, and the strategic, defensive technique of Northern WaterStyle.
In her further studies Kalani was instructed and taught how to Ice Bend. Despite her training in this field, her technique is still sloppy and highly uncontrollable, and even with its powerful advantages she's done more harm with this technique, then good. On the field, Kalani moves in a more aggressive, offensive manner. Quick, resourceful and cunning, her strategies involve hit-or-miss tactics as she prefers short battles opposed to drawn out ones. Naturally assertive and combative, even during training, she has been known to make impulsive, and sometimes rash decisions during critical times.
Healing:
In the North, healing is one of the first techniques taught to all female benders in the tribe, a custom that has been carried through the years despite the scrapping of most of their harsher traditions. Learning this technique at a young age Kalani has acutely trained her skills. Able to heal minor scrapes and cuts, bullet wounds, major burns, and severe lacerations are no problem under her care.
Equipment and Bionics:
- Touch Phone: Kalani's phone means everything to her. Jailbreaking the piece of equipment as to stay anonymous and hidden from the clutches of Future Industries, precious information--including drafts of old articles, eye witness information, testimony, photo's, and video recordings--are all locked safely away within her phone. Caring for it almost like a child, nothing and no one touches her phone without permission unless they want to lose a hand.
- Pistol: Legally owned, the gun is only kept for safety. Despite knowing how to aim, and fire the weapon, she has never had to fire at, or near another person.
Personality:
Kalani Uwato has been called many things in her life. Tenacious. Head strong. Hot tempered. Rebellious. While many of these were directed towards her as insults, she has learned over time to wear these titles like an armor, refusing to let anything or anyone bring her down. Wearing a confident, almost stand-offish outer shell Kalani can come off a bit intimidating or stuck up. In person however, she is far from this. Both intelligent, and witty in conversation, Kalani has always considered herself a people person. Good with her words, and charm, she can typically win someone over after a few minutes of analyzing them.
While her bending is her greatest offense, Kalani considers her voice her greatest weapon. Never afraid of voicing her opinions, or striking up a conversations, she lives for intelligent debates and correcting[s]smashing[/i] misinformation. Kalani has a fantastic knack for charming her way through things. Capable of playing many faces, she can play any role necessary if it means getting her way, or the information she needs. Good with her words, and a heavy understanding for others to boot, she knows how to feed a persons ego and get her way through lying, and pretty words.
Shut off from her own personal issues, she becomes quickly agitated and aggressive whenever pestered, or asked about them. Over analyzing situations that involve friends, or family she tends to assume the worst of things before finding out the truth. It’s rare that she’ll allow herself to get close to anyone, because while she’ll never admit it, those that matter to her have the biggest effect on Kalani, and her self worth. Confident in her opinions, and skill, she was never one to be truly confident in herself. Despite all of this, she still carries a strong, and seemingly poised facade, hiding her true feelings and fearful of any judgement from those who truly matter to her.
Backstory:
Firstborn of the Northern WaterTribes current Chieftain, Kalani was raised in a conservative household where expectations, and rules were meant to guide and shape her future. Heir to the North through heritage she was told how to dress, act, and even talk in public, resulting in little room for her to grow on her own. There were rules for certain rules, and she was taught right from wrong in a very strict manner, while any protest resulted in punishment or the loss of what little freedom she had. The home Kalani had once loved became a prison, and at a young age, she began to rebel.
Her revolt started out small in the beginning. She skipped lessons, and made personal changes to herself such as the way she talked to her peers, or the way she dressed. This didn't go along well with her parents, but Kalani kept on. Craving more then just mannerism, and rules in life, it was these little bits of freedom that gave her the push to strive for more. With age her antics began to grow less subtle, showing obvious rebellion against her everyday agenda, and her parents idea of the perfect child. Refusing to give her space, or even to hear her out, Kalani's parents continued to lectures her on "Responsibility", and "Fate". Dictated by these words all her life, she challenged them at every chance she got. By the time she was a teenager her parents considered her a "loose cannon" and were beginning to consider disinheritance. However this idea was brought to an end once her grandfather, Ioane Uwato, proposed the idea of taking her under his wing as his protege in Republic City.
Despite her disapproval, Kalani was sent to live with her grandfather without a choice. Resenting him at first, she soon came to realize she and her grandfather weren't all that much different. Proud, and aggressive in nature, he was able to relate and connect with Kalani unlike anyone ever before. Furthering her training in WaterBending, he encourage his granddaughter not only to find her individuality in her bending, but in herself -- a freedom she had never received in the North. It was a time of peace for Kalani and rather then giving any past regrets, or troubles the opportunity to pull her down, she was finally allowed to grow, and mature the way she had always wanted. As she aged, and adapted to the lifestyle of Republic City, her interests began to shift towards a less confrontational hobby. Developing a love for journalism, Kalani was able to continue her WaterBending training, as well as furthering her passion in writing with the help, and guidance of her grandfather.
In the past four years Kalani has slowly built up a name, and reputation for herself. Running a popular online blog, and column that discussed current social, and economical issues within the world; her strong views, and large online following eventually caught the attention of United Daily News. Offered a job as a columnist, Kalani accepted the job and has been working for the United Daily News for the past six months. Drawing further into her new calling she's come to realize the true extent of Future Industries power over Republic City, as well as the Nations themselves. Fully aware of the propaganda being spread through television, newspaper, and internet, she has vowed to only post the truth, and nothing but the truth in her pieces. Recently stumbling upon notes, and reports hidden deep within the storage room about a rebel group called the 'Stormcrows', she has begun to research and seek out the resistance in secret. Intrigued simply by their existence, and even growing sympathetic to their cause -- Kalani wishes to help raise awareness of their cause, and aid their efforts to expose, and take down Future Industries.
