Since always. It keeps them from doing more wrong, and once they have served the equivalence of their crimes, they are released. A punishment is necessary, but one should never steal. There is authority for a reason, and it's meant to keep those who would do wrong in check. Not that I'm a fan of those in charge or anything.
I could equally argue that decapitation of all criminals will prevent them doing wrong, and therefore is right. Capitol punishment should therefore return?

You make a lot of assumption. Prison has never been wrong. There's nothing wrong with someone receiving justice for wrongdoing, but returning wrongdoing for wrongdoing will never be justice. Even taking someone's life is justified under the correct situation.
You're putting it under perspective, which is exactly what the other bloke was doing. Prison is literally being held in a confined space against your will. The perspective is that they deserve it because they have previously done wrong.
Since when has forcing someone into captivity not been wrong?
