The Future of Pern

The plot takes place on the planet Pern. Pern is the third planet in the Rukbat system located in the Sagittarian sector, also known as the Sagittarian Quadrant or Orion's Arm. It was originally colonized by 6,000 people that were lead by Admiral Paul Benden and Governor Emily Boll. Pern, along with five other planets, circle their sun known as Alpha Sagittarius. Pern, along with four other planets, have steady orbits about their sun. Pern has two moons, Belior and Timor. The solar system also contains two asteroid belts and an Oort Cloud. The sixth planet is a rogue planet called the Red Planet. The Red Planet's irregular orbit brought it close enough to Pern's orbit that it would rain down Thread that it had picked up traveling through the solar systems Oort Cloud. Its orbit was pushed out of alignment to smash into another planet to end the rain of deadly Thread on Pern.

Pern is made up of three continents, a large number of islands, and four major oceans. The Southern Continent is the largest of the three. It is known for large jungles and sweeping grasslands. It was what drew the original settlers to make their home there. The Southern Continent also has high tectonic and volcanic activity that was made worse when the Red Planet would come closer. It was a large factor in why the settlers moved to the Northern Continent.

The North Continent is vastly different than the Southern Continent. It is basically a shelf of bedrock that is tectonically stable but is also relatively infertile. It proved great protection from Thread when it was raining down on the planet. It was where the dragon weyrs and settlements were cut from complex cave systems that served as home and protection for the people and dragons.

Hardly anything is known about the Western Continent. Most of the data that is known is from the satellite surveys and a few maritime expeditions to it.

Interesting premise, but there are a few discrepancies between what you have in your post and what actually happened in the books.
1) In the books, it was the dragons, not the people who were developing additional talents (this was in The Skies of Pern, I believe).
2) After the events of All the Weyrs of Pern, the Red Star was on a collision course with another planet. As a result, any incoming meteors wouldn't likely have come into contact with the Red Star. They could still have passed through the Oort Cloud, where thread originates, or they could have passed by the planet that the Red Star collided with, though, and picked up thread that way.

In any event, this sounds interesting, and I will be keeping my eyes on this.

I am not against the overall idea of the character but the setting was going to be in the south since the plot is listed above...
Well, the last page but here it is again...

Plot

The last pass ended two hundred years ago. Thread was not due for another four hundred years at a shorter pass. Most dragon riders for the last two hundred years have expanded to other careers. Some, along with the average person, were exploring the mental talents that people had started to emerge in the middle of the last pass. There have even been attempts to breed green dragons with bronzes or browns to little success to have more dragons for those who have the talents. Many people have been taking advantage of the AIVAS computer and moved into the south. Dragonriders claiming the parts that only dragons can get to.

About five years ago dragons started producing clutches of larger sizes like it had been recorded before a pass. This time the signs were not lost as the queens rose to mate more often. The only thing that was after checking the early warning systems around the planet showed no signs of what was coming. The red star was in its frozen orbit furthest from Rukbart (the sun) as it could be. At least that was what they had learned from AIVAS. It was not until one of the early warning satellites was taken out by a meteor. It was a meteor shower but it was not a normal one. This one had come in contact with the red star bringing with it Thread. No one was prepared. They were caught off guard since they had not really been training for thread unless they lived in weyrs of the north. And from what they could tell there was more coming.
