Your ability needs to be something you yourself can fight against. Gestures is a good start but your character should require concentration to exert his will on something else, and limitation on what he can actually accomplish. Your character needs to be able to lose, and he needs to use more than his power to solve a problem, else how can he grow? Throwing objects around him, sure chairs even loose rocks, however flinging things that would instantly kill a normal person I am going to say no. People who are aware that he may try it can simply struggle making it far harder to lift them, let alone throw them. Crush things to smithereens...Once again Small objects only and this excludes steel bars and solid stone.
