Gematria

Gematria happily bounced in the air, overjoyed to finally meet her hero. Just as she was about to recount the events that led to her admiration of Stray, he was quick to tell Gematria about his plans to abandon the scavenger hunt entirely. "O-oh..." Gematria said, slightly disappointed. She wanted to use this chance to learn more about the guy and study his magic. Then she thought of a way she could turn this into another opportunity. "Well, um, maybe we can take this to... get to know one another? I-I've always wanted to hear some advice from an experienced hero, like-like you," Gematria stuttered, silently cursing herself for her weak communication skills. But perhaps fortunately, it seemed Stray had stopped paying attention to her, having noticed some commotion going on at the beach they had first gathered for the orientation. Gematria nodded and leapt into the air, catching herself by grabbing onto Stray's shoulders and holding on for dear life.

When they got back to the original meeting spot, Gematria was shocked to see what was unfolding. A few others had also returned and were currently engaging with two unknown assailants. At first, Gematria thought, even hoped, that this was just another exercise prepared for the orientation. However, the sight of Emily unconscious on the ground cleared away any doubt that this was a real villain attack. Unfortunately for Gematria, she had neglected to install actual weapons into the figure. Gematria froze, unsure of what to do in order to fend off Jellyfish and Albino.

When Jellyfish began his electric lightshow, however, Gematria had an idea and responded to Stray, "Don't worry, Stray, I have an idea. Just distract them for a minute." Gematria dropped down to the ground and transformed her body, shrinking her figure to its minimum 4 inch size. Then she boosted along the ground in a wide curve, going around the area of conflict in an attempt to remain unnoticed. Fortunately, with the altercation now focusing on Eva and Albino, that didn't seem to be too hard. Once she was close enough, Gematria blasted herself into the air, reverting back into her original 12-inch size and attempting to land on Jellyfish's head or whatever it was. "Absorbing voltage," Gematria announced as she began to absorb the electricity that flowed out of Jellyfish's tendrils and into the G.E.M. figure and herself, attempting to take as much as she could to try to render Jellyfish helpless. If he attempted to resist, she would use the energy she stole and attempt to zap Jellyfish back with a discharge of his own power.

Megumi watched as events unfolded before her. The fungus man went on a rant about what she assumed was the most recent events that led to his presence here. She felt sorry for him, but there was little she could say or do to alleviate his mood. It wasn't like she could relate to anything he had gone through. Then an additional bet came in to supplement the original prize of the scavenger hunt, and Stray was one of the first to jump at the chance. She marveled at the spell he had just performed for a moment, then realized she needed to get started if she wanted to have a chance at the scavenger hunt.

Megumi proceeded to take out her 12-inch G.E.M. figure from her bag and place her finger on its head. Her body then turned into a mass of electric sparks and flow into the figure, which then fell towards the ground. As it did, the display on its face plate lit up, revealing two blue lights for eyes. It flipped through the air and performed a superhero landing on the ground, then formed a cute pose. "Gematria, fully operational!" Megumi announced, now immersed in her Gematria persona. "Current directive: complete the scavenger hunt!" Her impact boosters, which looked like a pair of rings, emerged from the sides of her feet and made popping noises as she launched herself forward, following the path Stray had taken. Despite the small size, she was traversing a large amount of space in a short amount of time. She had managed to spot Stray, but her target was not him; it was the coin that had shot off to who knows where. Fortunately, her scanners were able to spot it and lock onto it, and she shot off towards it, hoping to use it to her advantage.

Unfortunately, it seems both of them were slower than Crane whose size gave her an advantage in speed. Gematria crossed her arms and harrumphed in disappointment, but the feeling was short lived as she realized she was next to her favorite hero. "Oh! Uh, h-hello, um, Stray!" Gematria stuttered to Stray as she fiddled with her fingers, unsure of what exactly to say. "I uh, uh... i-it's nice to meet you!"

Megumi nodded as Emily took back the paper, then she moved back to wait for any others to arrive. As it turned out, she didn't have to wait too long. A whole slew of people had decided to come to the orientation in a short period of time. There was a towering figure of a woman. She seemed nice. There was another woman who had an brash look and a sailor's mouth to match. Megumi... tolerated her. There was a... humanoid mushroom creature? Megumi wasn't sure why there was a Leftover here, but considering it hadn't attacked anyone, and seemingly no one else was too bothered by it, they were probably safe for the time being. Still, she chose to not-so-subtly walk around and hide behind Crane, just in case.

A few others also came by, but the highlight of the attendees was a certain magical rune-wielding hero. "It's Stray..." Megumi thought out loud, unable to contain her hint of excitement. Megumi's eyes had lit up upon spotting him, but she quickly averted them in embarrassment, a small blush forming on her face. She then cleared her throat as if there was something there. There wasn't. She just wasn't used to letting her emotions get the best of her.

Fortunately, the topic soon turned as Emily began to explain the upcoming activity: a scavenger hunt of little black pyramids, and the prizes upon winning it. Megumi placed a hand on her chin and slightly tilted her head, lost in thought. The mood plants were of little interest to Megumi; they were nothing to get particularly fussed about, but the idea of the scavenger hunt sounded fun. It would help test out some ideas Megumi had and see how effective they were.

Megumi groggily got up from her desk, where she had been resting the night before. She brushed her hair aside with her hands, then looked down, seeing the textbook she had been using as a pillow. There was a small, dried up puddle of drool on a colored diagram. Sighing, Megumi felt slightly lamented over the desecration of the book, but there was little she could do about it now. After wiping the spot with her thumb for a second, she closed the book shut and got ready for the day.

After getting properly freshened up and dressed, Megumi felt she was forgetting something about today. While eating breakfast, she checked the news on her phone. Various articles popped up on her feed highlighting the citywide HERO Festival, celebrating HERODays and something called "HEROXposition". She scrolled through the social media feed, but she quickly grew bored of it and switched to another site. It explained the latest theories of magic she found, which Megumi studied as thoroughly as she could. She had conducted experiments in the past, ranging from chanting and hand signs to magical herbal recipes and concoctions. Despite her best efforts, she had been unable to create any effects that could be deemed "magical". Still, she refused to give up on the matter.

A notification sounded on her HERO smartwatch, breaking her out of her thoughts. She made her way back to her room, where a hologram of Director Hugo Powers had appeared to deliver a message:

"Attention, heroes. I need a group of you to assist me at the Johnstone Convention Center. If you are available, please come and meet behind the stage. You will be rewarded for your time."

She had no idea why she received the message, though it seemed like it was sent to every hero with a smartwatch. From what she could tell, though, the call to action was optional. With that in mind, she opted to ignore it and allow more experienced heroes handle the mission. Megumi grabbed her bag, which contained her trusty action figure robot G.E.M., and set off to tackle whatever the day would throw at her. In this case, it was a sheet of paper that somehow managed to fly into her face. Looking around, Megumi saw Ms. Emily Duff in the midst of the rather windy weather having lost the papers she held. Megumi recalled there was some small news regarding a small orientation about new heroes, and she figured she could attend. Although she had made great efforts to prepare for being a Hero, it was only recently she had actually managed to apply and obtain a proper license. At the very least, it wouldn't hurt to attend.

Walking over to a slowly growing group, Megumi extended her arm out to hand the sheet of paper that had flown into her back to Emily. "Ms. Duff, I believe this is yours," Megumi said emotionlessly.

Aww man, I wasn't planning on getting my old Sir E. Brum character, but Wiseman is looking pretty fly. Curios to see what he'll be up to.
Welp, I guess I could dust off my character sheets, see what I can scrounge up.
Oh, we have a discord? Could someone provide a link, pls?
As I read all these essay-length posts, I am reminded as to why I stopped joining these in the first place. So much to read and so much to keep track of.
