The ride to Hogwarts had been mostly uneventful for James. Aside from having to calm down a few over-eager first years teaching their new muggle-born friend how to play Exploding Snap, most of the compartments that James passed on his patrol were quiet. He did have to revisit the first-years and remind them to calm down an hour later, but that really was the only noteworthy event of the nine hour train ride.

The ride from Hogsmeade Station to the castle was likewise uneventful. James got on a carriage with a few of his Quidditch teammates and they shared their enthusiasm for the upcoming season. They had come within a hair's breadth of winning the Quidditch Cup for Gryffindor last year, only for it to slip through their fingers at the last game by a measly 10 points. James was determined not to let that happen this year, and he was already formulating strategies and planning weekly training as soon as he decided who was going to be playing for them this year. They needed a new Keeper and one new Chaser this year as the previous players had graduated, but James wasn't going to shy away from picking other new players if some of his current teammates weren't up to snuff.

Arriving at the castle, James headed into the great hall with the rest of the students. He noticed a few friends and acquaintances from the other houses as they entered and nodded or waved to them if they happened to look his way. He took a seat next to Elliot and the rest of the current Quidditch players as well as a few prospects who were hoping to ingratiate themselves with the rest of the team in the hopes that it might better their chances of being selected for one of the open positions.

"You excited for Quidditch this year?" James asked Elliot as he took his seat next to the seeker.@josephb
I'm ready to skip ahead. I have no current ideas for how to get interactions between James and any of the other characters on the train.
The morning had been an ordinary September 1 morning for James Dalton. He groggily pulled himself out of bed between 7:00 and 7:30 AM and got dressed. He chose to dress in his school uniform rather than change into his uniform on the train like he normally did this time. He would have to meet with the other prefects as soon as the train left, and then patrol the train, so it would just be so much easier to be dressed in his uniform with his shiny new prefect badge from the get-go. Once he was dressed, he hauled his luggage downstairs and set it by the front door before heading into the kitchen to grab a quick breakfast before his parents took him to King's Cross station in London. As usual, Platform 9 3/4 was a bustle of activity as parents said good bye to their children and students boarded the train to begin their journey to Hogwarts, whether it be their first year, their seventh, or somewhere in between like James, in his fifth year at the magical school. James said good bye to both his parents, gave each a hug, then boarded the train. There were still about fifteen minutes left before the train left, giving James plenty of time to board the train and carry his luggage into the prefects' compartment. He sat down and nodded at his fellow prefects, not recognizing any of the ones that were here yet. His fellow Gryffindor prefect wasn't here yet - he wasn't even sure who she was - and the others were not ones he was familiar with either.
@TheHangedMan Yeah, that makes sense. Plus, since both our characters play Quidditch, they probably know each other from there, too. That last part actually goes for everyone on the Quidditch teams. Since they play each other so much during the school year, they probably are all at least familiar with one another if nothing else.

Okay, I'm stupid again. With so many characters who play Quidditch, it's hard to remember which one doesn't. That aside, my previous statement still stands regarding those characters who do play Quidditch. They are all likely to have at least a degree of familiarity with one another.
