The way the Knight of Wind, Alya, laughed at the ambush didn't sit well with Arno. He enjoyed the fight, it was exciting, a true contest of skill in martial prowess and strategy, but he didn't trust anyone who relished the fight. Those who seek the battle are often those who broke ranks to chase down the routing enemy, right into a potential ambush. Arno specifically passed on those soldiers when selecting his men for his troop, even when the battle loving warriors were often more skilled. He needed men to hold a formation, not to break it and turn a battle into something like a common street brawl. He glanced back at her and saw her hop off the wagon, catching an arrow midflight before saying her weapons were out of range. Before Arno could say anything, she disappeared into the fleeing crowd, presumably to hunt down their ambushers. Darkness Knight had hopped off long ago. Arno huffed in displeasure as he felt another handful of arrows smack against his shield, though he would be lying if that catch didn't impress him.

Mira poked out of cover to fire an arrow in the direction of the incoming fire, what she hoped to accomplish Arno didn't know. Suppression fire with arrows was an advanced tactic requiring at least a hundred well trained archers firing in rank, ripple or platoon fire. She quickly caught an arrow in the shoulder, and if these attackers were skilled, they would be using broadhead arrows. A very deadly arrowhead against unarmored targets. He looked back once again after a slightly lighter than usual volley against his shield, seeing that Sidero was offering to be bait for their attackers. Lady Oriel disagreed, offering her armor. Both plans weren't ideal, Sidero could be killed in his heroic distraction, and Arno preferred that nobody else get hit in case their attackers move to engage in close quarters combat. Putting on Lady Oriel's armor would take too long, the longer they stayed, the higher the chance that someone would get hit by a lucky arrow. Arno glanced around, seeing the thick wooden walls of the wagon. He stomped his foot on the wagon floor a few times, then kicked the wall to his right a few times, feeling that the wagon side was thicker than the floor. He rose his foot and kicked the side with a good deal of strength, snapping the supports at the base. He then grabbed his warhammer, using the spiked end, slammed it into the top of the now loosened side. He moved it back and forth, wrenching it free.

He dropped the large board, formerly the side of the wagon, behind him. He looked behind him, seeing that Oriel had her gauntlets on. "Lady Oriel! I need you to carry this board as a shield! Telius! Grab Arcane's bow and help her move! Do not take that arrow out of her!" Arno commanded, in that voice he used to lead fifty warriors in the midst of a battle, "Metal! Drop those bodies and carry Lady Oriel's armor case! We will be moving left into the..." he looked to his left, "herbs shop, under protection of the wagons side and the armor case! The wagon side first, then the case! On Lady Oriel's mark! Get ready!"

Vera walked around the new truck, examining it from top to bottom. It seemed like the new ZiS-150's, but the driver had already gone, and with nobody to sate her curiosity her guess would have to do for now. She took a quick look at the other trucks then made her way back to the group, rather aimlessly. She didn't particularly want to talk to anyone there, and nobody seemed to want to talk to her, which was fine with her. Soon after a man rose his voice and gathered the attention of the group, he announced that they would be assigned rooms, which made Vera raise an eyebrow. She expected a barracks, not rooms. Didn't soldiers usually get a barracks? She kept listening. Vera ended up being in the last room, room 5, with two others. Aleyev Yanovich, a Russian judging by the name, and Naomi Robinson, not a Russian. She didn't know where the name was from, just knew that it was further west. An American? English? Both nations had their hands full right now, and Vera was curious as to how they arrived here in the east.

She looked around, noticing that people had already started to move towards the barracks, and others were still waiting for room assignments. Vera decided to walk to her room, following a few people out. The base didn't seem to be populated by soldiers, instead, there were white coats and crisp uniformed officers. A stark contrast to some of the people she had just seen in the vehicle depot, with uniforms worn in and well used. She soon entered Block C, going down the hall to Room 5. She slowly opened the door and poked her head in, seeing two others already in. She glanced around, raising her eyebrows in mild surprise. She stepped in and closed the door behind her, walking around the room and examining the place. Vera looked into the bathroom and then back at the others. "Not quite what I imagined when they told me I had to join the military."
She walked over to the last empty bed and sat on it, touching the bowl of the soup before taking a sip of it.
So... How many archers are attacking us? And how far are they?

Arno watched as they were herded towards a wagon, he'd been on wagons before during marches. Usually only the most armored troops got on the wagons, to save their stamina. Of course they were infamous for being rolling coffins against enemy ambushes. But Lady Oriel was being put onto the wagon, so Arno had to follow. The palace workers tried to help him onto the wagon, but Arno pushed them off of him, he could get on a wagon himself. He hoisted himself onto the transport and took a seat next to Lady Oriel, and soon an elderly man came running over, surprisingly carrying a trunk towards them. He gave the trunk to Oriel, and the two exchanged words. Arno studied the mans face and committed it to memory, judging from their conversation he kept her hidden from the crown. He'd have to thank him later.

The Knight of Light whistled and a wolf leapt onto the wagon, the sudden appearance of a wolf prompted Arno to place a hand on his warhammer, but he didn't draw it. If a wolf wanted to attack them it would have leapt onto someone with its jaws in their neck, not onto the deck of the wagon itself. The wolf itself was impressive, as most wolves were. In response, a magical bird of prey came from another Knights arm. She said its name and it became a tattoo on her arm. The one with the wolf introduced himself as Leonidas and the one with the falcon introduced herself as Alya Frei. Next the Spirit Knight introduced himself, with grace and the practiced words of a noble. Arno knew his kind, and hoped he wasn't like most of his peers. The Arcane Knight introduced herself next, saying her name was Mira Bellwood while doing a curtsy. Usually young nobles or royals did those. Arno saw that the next had summoned a fox from thin air. Arno tuned out after that. He simply sighed, and buried his face into his left hand, resting his elbow on his knee. Did he join a circus?

As the last Knight started to get on the wagon, it moved forward abruptly, causing the last Knight to lose his grip. He fell, revealing seven arrows in his back. Arno quickly slid his helmets onto his head and unslung the shield from his back. Leonidas covered his head and yelled for everyone to take cover. What cover!? Arno thought, he grabbed Lady Oriel's shoulder with his right hand and pulled her towards the floor. He stood up quickly and raised his shield, standing between his Lady and the incoming volley of arrows. A split second later he felt and heard half a dozen heavy thumps on his shield, and a few glancing blows off of his pauldrons and helmet. Arno glanced behind him to make sure Lady Oriel was safe. He shouted, "We must move out of this ambush!"
Do we have an image of The Condor, so we know what she looks like?

I wanted to include a short history of the character, but ended up writing four paragraphs... so I ditched that bit. I guess if you want to hear about Hale's past you're going to have to talk to him.

Edit: Added a bottle of Torian Brandy to the minifridge.
