There are anime movies (called OST or some shit) that you should just get yourself into. It's a much lower investment, and it brings you up to speed within the genre so you can watch shows and understand, like, what the tear drop over the face means, or the funky >V< thingies, or whatever.

OST universally stands for Original Soundtrack, you're thinking of OVA, and you're super right about OVAs being a good place to start.
