They cannot. But if they get within a mile of us, they will. My training has pushed the boundaries beyond that of a normal fremen, hence why I was chosen to lead a sietch by the great Kwizatz Haderach.

...we fremen are a proud, warrior people. We have lived on this world for longer that history has recorded. Each and every day is a fight for survival, for us. Harsh lands, harsher living beings... then outworlders like the Harkonnen... there are no lack of threats to our people, to our livelyhoods. But despite that, we stand strong. We trust in one another so strongly that we can even sense each other without technology over long distances. For example, I know without prior info that there is likely a group if fremen 2 miles east riding great worms as part of their initiation. I can feel the change in the wind, and the vibrations through the sand. I also note that they left a thumper in the ground near them, a device that produces vibrations in the ground to attracts great worms.... I can also smell fragrances on you that do not belong to this world. You will likely need to fix that soon.

The air moves the sands naturally, creating natural vibrations. Our natural footsteps would disturb this, and the worms can sense that from miles away. However, this style of movement folows the movement of the sands, making it seem as if we were never there.

Come, we must make for the sietch while it is still dark. The great Shai Hulud and his kin will not be as active in this ared during this time. But you must follow my every move, moving with the sand and not agaisnt it. Creating such a natural pattern will throw off our sound, so that the worms do not percieve us as animals for feeding.
