Nations the Xim might be open to trading with are the Akkab (may be misspelled), the MONARCH, the Ch'ak, and maybe a few others. But not the New Republic.

Just Ch'ak, actually. No 'the'. It's really just the name of their sun (and by extension, the system). The demonym would be Ch'ak'ii, actually.

I think it wouldn't be too strange for Ch'ak to have not made contact with anyone's nations yet, on account of only being a single system. Though there'd likely be rumours of it; and I mean I wouldn't be averse to contact having already been made.

And I actually kind of assumed everyone was at least aware of each others' existences.

Also regarding weapons, you guys could make weapons that use sound to subdue enemies, while not practical for space combat, your people could develop that as a non-lethal weapon.

In my humble opinion I think that'd be rather easy for Short's enemies to get around with a pair of highly high-tech ear plugs.
