Well done, @Holy Soldier. A well-crafted introduction.

I'll start working on my post shortly, but I have two questions I feel might be relevant: Has Edgar ever heard the heartbeat of the nocturnal overseer? Also, was there anything abnormal about Achilles' heartbeat that Edgar would have been able to detect?
This'll be my character, approved via PM. Everyone say hello.

Two questions: What does Poe and Merlin's actual job consist of, if they can't read or write? And, would it be a little presumptive of me to name the 'night owl' Overseer 'Vlad Tepes'? Because I... feel like I know which two characters that side plot's geared towards.

"Hey dude hear about that under last night"
"Haha yeah it was great"
A beautiful friendship indeed. I'm going to put that in relations, is that OK?

Or even as adults. "Mr. Poe, there's been a murder!"

"Yeah, this is clearly the work of a vampire. Pardon me, have to send a bird to Bram, he'll handle this."

And go ahead, I'll do the same.
@AdobeFlash Makes sense to me. I can definitely see them having some kind of friendship going in, as they're both pretty... morbid.

Interested!

Also, slightly curious: is the fact that this is the fourth version of this thread to do with all the weird double-posting and downtime that's been happening lately?
I think I'd like to have Poe in the library with Merlin, mainly because bird-keeping for him wouldn't even be a full-time job. He could still probably do it on the side, but like, he'd just have to run out and yell at them every so often. No training required. :p

Age: 12
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Hair Color: Shaved bald.
Height: 4'10"
Weight: 90lb
Physique: Edgar is a skinny, gaunt child, with weedy limbs and clearly defined ribs.
Complexion: His skin is pale and his face is sallow, almost giving the impression of ill health.
Immunities: None to speak of.
Weaknesses: Edgar is insatiably curious, particularly with regards to mysteries or puzzles that defy solving. He sees a mystery as a challenge, and is driven to solve them by any means necessary, often sticking his nose into places where he probably shouldn't.

Titles & Feats: None, as he's a 12 year old slave.

Basic Personality: Poe is almost disturbingly grim for a child of his age, prone to pessimism and all things macabre. This being said, he's not all depression and sadness, as he also has a great fondness for black comedy and laconic wit. Underneath the rain clouds, he's actually a very caring, compassionate boy who'd like to see everyone get a fair deal - he just knows it's not likely to happen.

Psychological/Social Issues: Experiences some fairly severe depressive episodes, and is slow to form deep connections with others.

Appearance: Edgar is thin and lanky, with pale white skin and well-defined ribs. His face is gaunt and sallow, with heavy dark circles under his eyes - he almost gives the impression of ill health or fever, even at his most healthy.

Natural Abilities:

Telltale: Edgar can hear the heartbeats of anyone nearby him, in a radius of about ten feet, and detect any irregularities in them. The sound can't be dampened or obstructed, and he's even capable of recognizing the heartbeats of people he spends a lot of time with.

Darkness Held Dominion: Edgar has limited night-vision, being able to see more or less clearly in very low-light conditions (for example, he could see perfectly in a small room lit only by a single candle). He does, however, need some light source in order to see, and it doesn't work as well with starlight/moonlight.

Power:

Nevermore: Black birds of all kinds - Ravens, crows, sparrows, and so forth - are susceptible to Edgar's will. He has a limited ability to command them, from tasks as complicated as "Bring this to so-and-so" to as simple as 'attack'. He has no power to summon or call such birds, however, and his influence over them can't overpower their natural instincts - with the exception of his familiar Usher, they'll eventually leave to seek food (though if domesticated, they may be convinced to stick around).

Companion: "Usher", A jet-black male raven that follows him wherever he goes and is also subject to his powers.

Relations:
Bram Stoker, Friend and Confidant

Merlin Ambrosius, Co-worker
Edgar Allen Poe

That's what I've got so far. Let me know what you think! I wasn't sure if characters based on real-world people were allowed magical powers, but I hope Edgar's low powered enough and themed well enough to work.
Hey, posting to say that this seems very interesting. What would you say to an H.P. Lovecraft based character, with powers based around eldritch/occult matters?

EDIT: Actually, scratch that, as my brief bit of research reminded me that our dear friend Lovecraft was actually capable of assholery on a level I'd rather not address. Alternate suggestion: an Edgar Allen Poe character?
