"Stand your ground, and fight, you spineless fools. Dying is the day worth living for."
-Kuro Nakatomi, upon arriving to aid an ambushed group of vampires
Name: Kuro Nakatomi
Physical Age: 15
Actual Age: 1514
Personality: Kuro, even though considered as one of the elder vampires, is notorious for being soft-spoken, and a bit aloof even when around vampires who were of the lower rank than him. This demeanor led many, if not all, to conclude that Kuro demanded no respect. No one is to be blamed, because Kuro really commanded no amount of respect. He always smiled, addressed people informally, and perhaps one of his most famous acts, took a nap (even though he didn't really need it; it can be viewed as him showing his lack of interest in the subject) while an important meeting was being held. He is also famous for his childish manners such as fascination for toys, inclination to pick his nose, and even play child games. Kuro has a childlike voice since he wasn't able to get his voice to deepen when he was still alive, and as such, even if he was saying something serious, it wouldn't really be taken seriously; Kuro isn't really bothered by it though. However, he still is an elder vampire, and as such, can still strike fear in the (undead) hearts of his subordinates. An example of this would be during an ambush by the Black Swords where lesser vampires were in danger of annihilation. They were about to just surrender their wills when suddenly, Kuro arrived, and with only two sentences, he strengthened the spines of his allies, assuring them a victory. This means that Kuro can be serious (really serious) when the situation demands it, but most of the time, he is literally a kid.
Bio:
Born during the stabilizing environment of the Kofun period of Japan, Kuro started off as a normal boy who served under the Nakatomi clan. The Nakatomi Clan was assigned, along with the Inbe, to safeguard the rituals of their government. Why was the Nakatomi assigned for such rituals? The answer is simple. The Nakatomi claimed to have descended from Divine Origins, especially from Jimmu who descended from Ninigi, and ultimately, from Amaterasu. In this case, the clan was prideful, and strict with their ritualistic practices. Naturally, one of the greatest honors in the Nakatomi is when a child becomes a candidate for a priest. In this case, Kuro was chosen from his bloodline. Kuro practiced and practiced the rituals; his blood, sweat, and tears were poured in order to fully devote his life to a set of deities who he could not see nor witness. However, no matter how many times he chanted a sutra, he could never communicate with a deity, not even Amaterasu, Izanagi, Izanami, or whatever god/goddess there was. These failures shook Kuro's faith as he began to question his practices at a young age of 13. These complaints reached the ears of Shogo Nakatomi, the highest priest of their clan, and retribution came swiftly. Not only was Kuro incarcerated from his clan, but he was also sent as a tribute to the Great Chinese Empire as one of the tributaries during the Kofun period. Apparently, in an era where religion was strong, questioning the dogmas was the surest way to face an inevitable disaster.
En route to China, Kuro's frail and young body failed him as he began to contract such illnesses that were considered incurable at that time. The boy was fated to die in that cursed trip along with the other tributaries. Kuro had already accepted his fate; a fate that was going to knock at Death's door. That night, while slowly relinquishing the last few drops of moonlight that he would ever see, the young boy saw a shivering figure a few meters in front of him. It was one of the newer tributaries from Silla, one of the longest dynasties that lasted in Korea, and without hesitation, Kuro gave the shivering woman his blanket. The shivering stopped as Kuro smiled, and looked at himself using a pool of water that remained stagnant in a wooden basin in front of him.
His emaciated face, his hands that could be compared to a skeleton, and even his eyes that looked like they were going to pop out of their sockets, was all Kuro could see. However, instead of recoiling from such a horror show, Kuro touched his face, and smiled. "I'm handsome, aren't I?" said Kuro with a chuckle. Suddenly, a figure clad in a crimson robe appeared within the confinements of their container. Kuro looked at the fair maiden with a smile as he shook his shoulders. "Sorry, no more blankets. I can give you my robe though... if you want it."
The maiden smiled as she caressed Kuro's emaciated cheeks with her snow-white and silky smooth fingertips. "You silly boy. You silly, silly boy. You really are very generous." the maiden spoke in a chilling yet, oddly, comforting voice. "Well, the dead don't really have any use for clothes now, do they, fair maiden?" Kuro chuckled as he weakly raised his hand to his neck, and made a slicing motion. In a flash, the maiden handed him a wooden cup which was filled with a crimson liquid. Kuro's eyebrow raised in inquiry as the maiden replied: "It's medicine." Bowing his head in gratitude, Kuro drank the 'medicine' as he fell backwards, and entered a slumber eternal.
Kuro awakened as he sat up. He felt a ravaging thirst at his throat. The boy waved his hands as he clawed at the ground. Suddenly, the same maiden he had met a few moments ago arrived in the bare room. Kuro became still as he began to wonder. The maiden merely handed him a cup which he drank from, and almost instantly, he felt alive... he felt MORE than alive. Kuro thanked the maiden as he stretched his arms, and what he saw was something that shocked him greatly: his arms were as pale as death. It took quite a long time for the maiden to explain everything to Kuro, but in the end, he began to accept his new life: a nocturnal life.
Kuro lived through the evolving japanese civilization. He even took part in the Kamikaze; the Kamikaze wasn't a typhoon... It was merely the deed of vampires. That is why it happened twice. Kuro also lived through the Shogunate Era where he first served under Yoritomo Minamoto (who promised not to tell anyone of Kuro's true nature) which ensured the Minamoto Shogunate to prevail against the Taira. Blood was no issue during the shogunate wars. Kuro killed anyone who opposed Minamoto, however, when Minamoto's successors took over, Kuro became distasteful of them, and didn't rejoin the war until Nobunaga Oda's time. Nobunaga was secretly supported by Kuro's strength, however, Kuro had to return his coven when he heard that the Maiden had been killed by someone whose identity was still unknown. Kuro vanished from the shogun war for a few decades, and only returned during Iemitsu Tokugawa's reign. At that time, Japan was closed to the outside world, and as such, their culture and agriculture flourished. It became comparably peaceful during Iemitsu's reign, prompting Kuro to settle back on his bloodlust... merely feasting on criminals who happen to break the law.
Time passed by similar to how eons would pass like days. Suddenly, Kuro was thrown back into the middle of a conflict when most of the entire vampire populace assaulted the major cities in Japan. The vampires were utterly defeated as the remaining children of the night regrouped in the only safe place left. Although Kuro wanted no part in this war since the vampires were the ones to blame, his decision changed when he began to uncover clues as to who killed the Maiden; it was a vampire hunter. Kuro is still reluctant to actually fight but he had already joined in some skirmishes against the vampire hunters. However, unlike his brethren who wage an all-out crusade against the Black Swords, Kuro prefers to hunt only when needed, and as such is rarely seen fighting against the hunters.
Currently, Kuro still pretends to be a child amidst all of these trials. He maintains a childlike attitude to mask a growing bloodlust within; this is a bloodlust that longs to spill the blood of the humans whose ancestors bore a hand in the killing of a person who gave him a second chance.
Skills: While Kuro possesses all of the common vampiric abilities, he is famous for being a virtuoso in the field of Metamorphosis. Kuro has a legendary aptitude for transforming into a bat and as such, he can grow wings while maintaining his human form. Not only that but he also possesses the rare addition of being able to manipulate a swarm of bats even when he had already grown his wings. Kuro's wings are also noticeably bigger than most vampires, and even more endurance, and flight speed. Kuro also possesses a very strong grasp of Hypnosis, as this is his main tool to manipulate the enemies of Yoritomo and Nobunaga such as Kiyomori, and even Mitsuhide Akechi in order for his chosen team to get an edge. Kuro is poorly skilled when it comes to Necromancy, mostly because he respects the dead, and he sees necromancy as defilement of those who had entered the Blessed Sleep.
Kuro is also skilled when it comes to Tantojutsu or Dagger Fighting Style. While he does carry a katana, he often uses the short tanto which is hidden inside his left sleeve. While he isn't as smart as the ancients, he does possess a decent amount of intelligence to match even the greatest thinkers of human comparison.
Anything Else:
Kuro is extremely lenient when it comes to his subordinates, and as such, even if a lesser vampire would trashtalk him, he would just smile. He always wears a kimono, the same kimono that the Maiden gave him to wear.
One of Kuro's fatal flaws is the fact that he doesn't kill just any human. He GREATLY prefers those humans who are criminals or evildoers. As such, he is very picky, and will only drain the blood of the innocent when he is insanely desperate.
