Esther al-Mubarak
Appearance:Esther is about 5’ 5” and 120 lbs, making her fairly skinny. This is because she has the metabolism of three teenagers in one. Her hijab is on pretty much 24/7, and Esther often compliments it with numerous t-shirts (including, infamously,
this gem) and a pair of jeans.
Nicknames: Est (mostly used by family; Esther doesn't much like nicknames, but tolerates this one.)
Race: Human.
Gender: Female.
Sexuality: Lesbian.
Personality: Esther, at first glance, is impish, sarcastic, lazy, and prone to sudden bouts of shouting. She’s blunt, swears like a sailor, and has no patience whatsoever for idiots. However, underneath her shell of anger and curse words, Esther has a heart of gold; she’s surprisingly compassionate, friendly, and intensely loyal. She honestly enjoys laughing and making others laugh, and as it turns out, sarcasm and good timing make for a great combination in that department. Esther is also very independent, always attempting to do things on her own before asking a friend for help. Although, while Esther is generally a good person, that doesn’t mean she’s unopposed to doing things the... less than legal way. As long as nobody gets seriously hurt, anyway.
Despite outwards appearances, Esther is actually rather introverted, preferring to spend the majority of her time browsing Reddit or making music in her room. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Esther’s identity (as a Muslim, a woman, and a lesbian) is very important to her, and woe betide the person who disparages her for being who she is.
Background: Esther, and her mother, are originally from Iraq, but they emigrated to the U.S. when Esther was 4. Her father was apparently an American soldier, but any more than that her mother won’t say. The two of them ended up living in upstate New York, in a suburb of Buffalo. Growing up with only one parent is difficult enough, but when you’re a fairly poor Muslim family to boot? It gets pretty tough.
Esther started working part-time pretty much as soon as she was able, to supplement her mother’s work as a manager at Walmart. Esther’s first job was mowing lawns for people in an upscale neighborhood a few blocks over, at 12, but once she turned 14 she got a proper job at a McDonald’s. And of course, in addition to money troubles, there was the usual Islamophobia, sexism, and so forth. Also the time Esther got fired for getting caught trying to pickpocket her supervisor (and the few times she wasn’t caught). And the time Esther mugged a businessman. (She didn’t try to injure him with the knife, but it turns out getting nicked slightly is a great motivator.) And… well, there was a lot of petty crime that happened. Her mother was concerned, of course, but decided not to question the sudden influxes of money. They didn’t happen often enough to get Esther suspected of anything much, officially.
In terms of education, Esther’s a pretty bright kid, even skipping 5th grade. Now that she’s in college (on a merit scholarship, mostly), Esther’s mother wants her to become a doctor, or a lawyer, or anything really, as long as it makes a decent amount of money. Esther, however, has other plans: she wants to be a musician. She’s always loved music; she took music theory as an elective every year in high school, she learned how to play the piano, and you’d be hard-pressed to find her without at least one earbud in. Esther’s already making her own music, combining orchestral elements with drum and bass, with a bit of jazz sprinkled on the top. She plans to release her first album on bandcamp, under the name “tokidoki” (sometimes), in the near future.
Text Color: "I... cannot... fucking believe you just did that! Of all the monumentally headassed things you've ever done, this has got to take the fuckin' cake. If we get out of this alive, I am going to steal your teeth, you dumb fuck."Abilities: Fairly accomplished piano player. Fluent in Arabic. Black belt in Tae Kwon Do (tends to default to instinctual flailing in fights though). Good at coming up with creative threats and insults. Decent thief. Not an awful cook.
Items: An olive green hijab (her favorite), her phone (at 84% battery, no reception), a pink Nintendo DS Lite (dead, with no games), and her Memento.
Memento: A single white wooden piano key, made into a necklace by way of boring a hole through one end and looping a chain through it. It's from Esther's first piano, which was so old that it eventually just fell apart.
Memento Theme: Music/Emotion (the two are inextricably related for Esther; she can't have one without the other).
Class One: Mage.
Unique Class: Bard of the Heart. Music and sound-based spells, leaning towards emotion-affecting and offensive abilities.
Abilities:- Parodia Sonatina: Esther creates an extremely loud burst of sound, inflicting INT+1 damage to everything in its (small-ish) radius.
- Voxez: Causes nearby enemies to hear a chorus of whispering voices, instilling bone-chilling fear in them for, at minimum, 30 seconds. Esther can make it last longer, but she must concentrate on the spell if she does, and cannot cast another spell during that time.
- Floor of Lava: Esther designates an area to become extremely hot, marked by the ground beginning to glow a cherry red. Anyone who remains there takes INT/2 damage every few seconds. The spell fades after a minute or so.
- Memento Ability: Soul Blast. When Esther feels a particularly strong emotion, her Memento will activate an appropriate effect, according to the emotion. The effects are random each time, but tend to stay "in-theme", so to speak; things like anger and fear generally provide offensive effects, while happiness and determination provide buffs. They are also accompanied by a burst of music, always a song that Esther associates with said emotion, emanating from the Memento. While Esther can't control what effect is used, she can, with concentration, cause Soul Blast to trigger when she chooses.
