You heard of cyberpunk? It's like that but steam. Briefly,
It's when you imagine what the world would be like if the Victorians had kept going with the steam engines and science was steam powered.
Ha ha interesting choice of terminology but I have to agree. I'd rather just tell the tales myself.

I know. I'll do a steampunk Princess Leia. Leia, headstrong daughter of the king working as a diplomat but actually a member of MI6. Presumably will turn out to be adopted and someone's twin sister at some point. Uses a steam-powered lightsaber and is master of using "The Forge". :)

I like that idea so much I'm going to change my avatar. :)

Steam LIghtsaber might need some work though. I don't want to have to be dragging a boiler around.
By freeform I mean is there an RPG in the background - books and dice rolls and so on - or is it more like collaborative fiction? Either would be fine but I have more experience of the non-mathematical sort. :)
Heart and Soul by Twin Atlantic.

I suppose my first thought on reading this one is that some kind of craft/trade group would do well. Shepherding, spinning, weaving. You'll all need socks. :) Also the creation of high-end trade goods. So they wouldn't be a martial group, but would have a lot of power through having skills that people needed. They'd probably be a small group living on some kind of highland/moorland with sheep and goats, but would be respected for quality tradeable goods. That's first impressions, anyway.
I like me a bit of Steampunk. Is this a freeform? I'd have to have a think about what kind of character I'd do though.
All interesting. I'd personally go for Wheel of Time though - always fancied writing an Aes Sedai, although not sure what Ajah I'd go for.
Ah that's a shame. Like I say, my original idea was a lot of ships of different languages having communication issues. Maybe one for another thread in the future. ;)
I'd had an idea in the past for a futuristic RP based on Esperanto (which I speak) along the lines of how it appears in Harry Harrison's books.

Could be that there is a small group of people/ship who have dedicated themselves to international relations on-ship/inter-ship - translators/diplomacy. So they have in effect renounced statehood in order to try and keep everything together, acting as go-betweens. Perhaps even a hospital ship or dedicated neutral zone?

Must confess I don't know if this forum has rules about posting language so it might not work, unless
I always post a translation.

Either that or perhaps a xenolinguist who tries to communicate with the aliens?

Apologies for vagueness but I'm just going offline for a bit so I wanted to get some thoughts down. I'll have a proper read of the thread in a bit.
