I'm not sure what I'd do, honestly. I'd have to think a bit. Though probably wouldn't lean too hard into something specific because of the setting when it comes to powers.
On the other hand, I might have to fight any urges to ape Sherlock Holmes or similar things.
The ritual had begun more than two days ago. In a carefully-prepared and well hidden ritual space, neither the sorcerers nor the other participants knew much of the time involved. It was now a sheer effort of will to continue on, with no rest, food, or water. Arcane energies had gathered and pierced the veil, calling out to beyond the stars.
The sounds of violence hardly reached the ears of the ritual's participants, before a number of creatures burst into the room. The surprise attack was brutal and efficient, and soon everyone in the room lay dead or dying. The last of the Society sorcerers' power flowed out with their lifeblood, the rite they were enacting broken. And yet, the otherworldly creatures they had called forth did not simply fade away. Already drawn down to the Earth, but now without living candidates to even consider, they had little recourse but to scatter in search of worthy vessels for their power. Koizumi residence
Saya had finished her chores and taken a bath, and was now cloistered in her room, working on homework. A first she passed off the occasional strange thing at the edges of her vision as just fatigue, or maybe daydreaming. She kept working on her math until the inhuman eyes popping in and out of view made it look too much like her assignment was staring at her. Saya yawned and rubbed her eyes. "I'm just tired, that's all," she said to herself and turned around. "Eh?"
Her room didn't really look like her room. Just for an instant, she saw something else. A strange, alien world she could barely comprehend superimposed itself over the room, twisting the familiar shapes into strange and frightening things. And even after that wave of vertigo had passed, there was a palpable presence remaining in the room. Something unseen was there, watching her. Rather than react in pure horror, Saya was more confused and curious than anything. Whatever was invisibly there in the room was clearly examining the girl, and she could feel the gaze of many eyes upon her, as if they could see right through her. This thing was carefully checking...something bout her, but she didn't have a clue what it was looking for or even what it was.
Saya stood up from her desk and took a few hesitant steps before that something reached out and seized her. The unseen visitor held her transfixed, and the moment stretched into an eternity as Saya's world was filled with excruciating pain. She could clearly see the thing now, and her mind balked at bulk of eyes and flesh that had seized her. And yet, she held on through the pain, as a flood of power suffused every cell and threatened to tear her fragile body apart. Even her mind was almost overwhelmed. Yet there was a core of steel within her, and she held on. And then, time began to move again. The pain faded almost instantly, and a cool numbness remained as the only reminder.
Name: Saya Koizumi Age: 14, 3rd year middle school Appearance:
Saya is average in overall height and build. She obviously suffers from albinism, with characteristic pale skin, eyes that are a sort of pale pink or purple in color, and extremely light hair. She usually wears sunglasses when out and about, or wears glasses with lenses that tint automatically when exposed to bright light or UV. She isn’t the sort to keep up with current fashion, and most of her clothes that aren’t her school uniform are far behind the latest trends. Due to her illness, Saya has several surgical scars.
History: Saya’s family are caretakers and priests for one of the local shrines. As a result, she has an actual house that’s a good size and something of a rarity in an arcology. Her parents are traditional and strict when it comes to duties to the shrine, but otherwise Saya can usually avoid trouble if she’s got a good enough cover story and luck on her side. She has an older sister whom she adores. The two sisters get along well enough ,with the usual amount of friendly ribbing, and they split the household chores between them. They both have to work to maintain the shrine’s grounds and help out during festivals.
Saya wasn’t really born healthy, and she wasn’t born lucky, either. In addition to her lack of pigment and associated vision problems, she’s struggled with illness for much of her life. Modern medicine keeps her living a surprisingly active lifestyle, but she still needs frequent hospital visits and surgery to replace failing organs or otherwise treat her frequent medical woes.
Saya’s school life is probably what one would consider unremarkable. She’s not very smart, so she works hard for her grades. She has a few friends and hangs out with them. She watches weird shows and makes costumes based on the characters. Sometimes she tries to drag her friends into doing the same. Her unusual appearance alone is enough to set her apart, leading to the occasional odd look or people talking behind her back. Usually, it stops there, but sometimes things escalate into outright bullying. Saya putting up with things in as much good humor as possible likely does not help matters either.
She and Mako are acquaintances, having met several times at the school nurse's office, or occasionally at the hospital. Outside of small talk, she doesn't know the older girl very well.
Personality: Despite her weak constitution, Saya is energetic, outgoing, and positive. She works hard to get what enjoyment she can out of her good days, and rather than depend on others, tries to be someone they can depend upon. She helps others who she feels are suffering or in trouble, and she is perhaps a little too naively trusting.
She is also delusional. She believes herself to be a magical girl, even if she is demonstrably not. Surely, she can rush headlong into danger and things will work themselves out just like she’s the protagonist of some sort of show. This seems to be something of a coping mechanism for what’s happened to her.
Since her union with her symbiont, Saya has slowly become more cold-tempered, cruel, and violent. She’s more intimidating than she has any right to be, and seems to enjoy frightening her enemies with displays of her own strength. Even if she wants to befriend or get through to an enemy, she’s more than happy to beat them into submission first.
Ta'ge Symbiont
Natural weapons:
Talons: The nightmare’s hands are tipped with long, deadly talons.
Tentacle sheathe: The nightmare grows a set of tentacles that are usually retracted into one forearm. They can be used to entangle or grapple an opponent as well as do damage.
Shoulder Pods: Each shoulder pod fires crimson bolts of energy capable of punching through walls.
Depthless Strike: A wave of energy fired by striking the ground or another surface. It travels along a physical plane and can even follow it around corners to strike foes out of sight or in cover.
Limit Weapon: Mystic Blast - Both shoulder pods charge up and unleash a terrifying blast of energy 2 meters wide and as tall as the tager. This blast is capable of taking out walls and even powered armor, damaging anything in its path.
Other supernatural Abilities: Standing a full head taller than most tagers, Nightmares are stronger and more terrifying. They can often lift and throw cars, or similar feats of extreme strength. Nightmares are just as quick as their brethren, they just hit a lot harder. As well armored as most combat tagers, nightmares regenerate very quickly, often returning from near death to deadly within the span of several minutes. Saya’s has also manifested the ability to detect things by heat signatures.
Personality traits: Aggressive, violent, and overconfident. Nightmares are menacing, bloodthirsty, and always ready to pick a fight. While not driven to be in charge, a nightmare is the sort to question authority, if not outright rebellious.
Hybrid Form: Saya’s eyes become solid black, she gains her thermal vision, and may sprout her claws.
@Sylvan Kioko is also accepted, although pending any final edits.
@TheWindel I'm going to be honest, the pistols disposed of and replaced wholesale gives me this unavoidable mental image of Reaper tossing his empty shotguns everywhere. But that's the only actual issue I have and it's really not big enough to stop me when I like the rest of the character so much.
Since the teleportation ability is new, I do have some comments on it. I did briefly wonder what was meant by only teleporting parts of her body, but its via portals, so that's cool. Can others reach through these portals (ally or enemy)? And are there any limits on things in general, such as requiring line of sight? And for everyone, it's probably about time I start planning things for the actual RP beginning. I'd like to discuss how to get started with everyone, so please add your thoughts either here or on Discord.
Would you prefer to start with a normal day for your characters, to get things established a little ahead of the weirdness? Or would you rather get right into things?
My current plan for everyone getting her symbiont would be a ritual disrupted, and the symbionts are forced to find the next best hosts, who happen to be the characters, wherever they may be. Everyone can roleplay out what happens during that encounter. My current alternative would be to have all the characters in the same place near the ritual site, instead of scattered wherever they may be in Kojiki. Things would follow about the same, although they'd be more likely to jump right into combat, and there would be figuring out why everyone's around the same place at the same time.
Regardless, there will be some early encounters with Dhoanoids to sort out, and meeting someone from the Eldritch Society to look forward to pretty soon after that.
"It's been a while," Saki replied to Xehanort, before leaving him to handle the unexpected newcomer. The language they spoke sounded similar to Doman, but that's about as far as Saki could get. Language barriers. Always a wonderful thing.
Once they were in the bar, and enjoying their drinks, Saki sipped her own beer and listened as Xehanort explained the basics. "It's a bit of a shock, to say the least," she adds after he's done, conveniently changing the subject. "Wandering other worlds, and all that. You will get used to it, though." She took another long drink of her beer. "I'm honestly not sure if the heartless find you, or it's the other way around. But whatever the case, you're going to fight them regardless."
"At least you ran into us. It beats trying to go it alone when lost among the worlds. I'm Saki Gin'iro. Nice to meet you."
So, it's time for some character reviews or...whatever we'd call this. It's really more my thoughts on things overall.
@Mr Rage Mako: Well done overall. There actually is a blood-themed tager in cthulhutech, and hers is honestly pretty close to it by sheer coincidence. She definitely has a lot about blood, even before the symbiont. I've already mentioned the possible connection between her and Saya in that they both frequent the hospital. Whether that just means they've met there before but have otherwise had little contact or something more would be up to you.
Are there any notable limits to the blood manipulation ability?
@Polaris North Haru: She’ll probably be a good foil to some of the happier students, and I honestly hoped we’d have someone with a nasty home life. There’s room for things happening there. It’ll be interesting to see her have to interact with everyone. The delinquent type is also a fun archetype in general for this sort of thing.
The blademaster seems like a pretty solid symbiont. Thought it’s worth noting that most tager ranged weapons don’t really need to worry about ammo at all, so it’d be fine to just be able to keep tossing knife-like projectiles instead of summoning back the same ones.
@TheWindel Mana: I like the yakuza princess angle, and can definitely work some hooks with the yakuza themselves. If you had anything in particular in mind, I’m happy to discuss that somewhere.
No need to comment about your symbiont’s origins, we’ll handle that in the RP. At least, my intent is that everyone starts without them and gets them early on in the RP itself, so one can write up the experience.
A symbiont’s personality isn’t so much how one acts when shifted, rather it’s the general influence the symbiont has on you, regardless of form. One that has a very direct personality or preference for silence is certainly fine, though. I think the general way to go is a mixture of some positive traits and at least one thing that's negative and/or inhuman.
Symbionts can already stick to walls and ceilings, so you don’t really need an ability to shift your direction of gravity just to do it, and that ability is available to all tagers in their hybrid form as well as the shifted one (something I had missed when initially writing things up, and will edit into the OP). Another name for the limit attack could be Hounds of Tindalos, as the description seems pretty close to the teleporting things.
@Sylvan Kioko: She’s a foreigner, and already has quite a few of her own problems to deal with, and I like that. It'll be interesting to see how she adapts to things or grows into a group of friends/allies as things go on.
I feel like it might be good to pare down the number of different weapon effects. She’s got a lot of options available, and most tagers are a little more focused or limited overall. The ability to use her melee or ranged attacks as a delivery method is good. The parasitic tracker could be dropped in favor of another sense type to mystically sense something’s health and status.
Some general thoughts: It’s probably a good idea to specify an area of effect for limit weapons that primarily target an area. It’s also worth noting that in general, limit attacks targeting an area do not distinguish between friend and foe, they just hit everyone in them most of the time. Limit attacks that are the tager taking multiple individual actions or that target a single enemy are, of course, more discriminating.
Generally speaking, tagers shouldn’t have hand-held weapons as part of their shifted form. There’s no need to summon a gun-like weapon, you can just shoot the same projectiles out of part of your body. All ranged attacks also have effectively unlimited ammunition and therefore no need to reload in any way. I really like everyone's characters and the concepts of their symbionts, but some of them seem to diverge a bit too far from my expectations for the setting.
