Brief Planetary History:
The Ascendancy had its foundation laid in an alliance of confederate nations created nearly 280 years ago by the signing of the treaty of Rakyovil. A group of nations that shared a common historical and cultural heritage (*1) bound together in mutual defence against a rising hostile power that consumed the nations that surrounded it.
The United Federation of Azulix was attempting to re-create the First Ascendancy, which they saw as their birthright (*2). Through alliance and annexation the nation quickly dominated 1/3rd of the world within a decade. The deciding factor for spurning the creation of the treaty was when a UFA outpost was constructed on Livut’s larger moon, Orkir. Fortunately, all-out war never broke out. Although many bloody skirmishes erupted, as-well-as a number of proxy wars between several affiliated nations.
218 years ago, due to internal rebellion, political strife, and economic collapse, the UFA collapsed. Wars broke out within the formerly annexed states as factions vied for control of the fallen empire. Within a year most members of the confederation had peacekeeping forces deployed to the fallen empire. The members feared that the instability could spread to their states if left unchecked. Many of the now freed states welcomed the aid. Others resisted fiercely, blaming the confederation for the turmoil.
During this time, members of the Confederation nations began to worry that another power could rise to threaten them. They concluded that their species needed to be united under a democratic banner to preserve their freedoms. They set plans into motion to bring Azulix and their former client states into this new alliance.
210 years ago, the remnants of Azulix, now stable enough to function as a nation, signed the second treaty of Rakyovil. Officially ending the cold war between the Confederation and the UFA as-well-as forming the Rakyovil Ascendancy (*3).
Over the next 200 years, the Acendancy has spread into space; fully colonizing both of Livut’s moons and constructing a number of large space stations in orbit. It has also established many mining stations and outposts throughout the system.
However this period was not an entirely peaceful one. Wars continued in the former UFA nations for much of this time, unrest even continues to this day. 8 years ago independence protests (*4) on Livut’s moons broke into violent riots that quickly turned into and armed uprising. For half a year local forces struggled to maintain control. Worried that the uprising might spread to the orbital colonies, they sent in forces to supress the rebellion. Within weeks the ascendancy had swiftly and brutally put the uprising down. This action garnered a lot of criticism of the military response from the world’s media and tensions still last among the lunar populations.
Now, as a somewhat stable people, the ubemanok are taking their first steps into a new era.
(*1) The nations spanned much of the east and southern continent Tehanr, as-well-as parts of northern Nubi. These lands and peoples were once united by, the First Ascendancy, an empire that spanned much of the globe around 3700 years ago.
(*2) For much of its history, the leadership of the Ascendancy was somewhat democratic and merit based – a council of elders would choose one who had proven to be suitable to lead the people for life. Until around 3500 years ago, when Xokalir proclaimed that his bloodline would forever lead the Ascendancy. This eventually led to its breakup (around 3250 years ago) and eventual collapse approximately 3190 years ago. The last holdout of the empire was the land of Azulix, which is ruled by the descendants of Xokalir.
(*3) Also known as the True Ascendancy and the Successor Ascendancy.
(*4) The leadership of the Ascendancy is made up by a council of the eight largest nations, followed by an assembly of representatives from around 160 smaller nations. The lunar colonies – and the orbital colonies – don’t have direct representation in either the council or the assembly.
