Hello guys.

Essence is a long-running theme on this forum and so I apologise beforehand about the large amount of lore and terms that will be involved in playing this. We've had more than one season already and because it's all largely sandbox, I like to allow people maximum creativity and the ability to settle into the world and forge their own story there. Of course, we'll have an overarching plot but this RP relies on multiple story-lines and not on reaction-posts. We've already got roughly 7 people in this and we're looking for up to 3 new players. Without further ado, here's the basic raw premise of this new season, the idea of which is @Synthorian's. For the OOC and IC, look here.

Dictionary

(so you know what I’m on about in the summary)

Essence: Essence is the name we use for that which is in all things living: a soul, a life-force, blood, life and spirit. It’s everything but very few can manipulate it. Pre-2014 it was only the Gates and Gatekeepers. Afterwards a few more people developed the possibility to see it and very rarely- to use it too.

The races:
Angels: Human bodies + wings and special abilities. Refer to the types or angels and their classes on the site.

Humans: Just the same as usual with the rare exception that’s a mage. Humans can also be possessed/absorb the essence of angels or demons turning into surface demons (vampires, werewolves), grey agels and chimeras.

Demons: Divided generally in two – surface demons and Hellions. The former could be considered infants in comparison to the latter. Hellions are an incredible array of shapes, forms and abilities. They sustain themselves on others’ essence and can command magic at will.

Chimeras: Any combination of the above with the most uncommon being an angel/demon chimera.

The world(s): it consists of 2 sub-worlds - the Surface and Hell. Hell is where an array of demons live, almost all unique. The Surface is populated by angels, humans and surface demons. Since the fall of Hell’s Gate a lot of Hellions have settled on the Surface again.

Heaven: used to exist but is now in ruins after the so-called Great War. That’s when one demon called The Fleshshaper found a way to make chimeras and breached Heaven’s Gate. Eventually the demons won the war. Due to some more complicated reasons (you can inquire), the angels settled on the Surface and pushed the Hellions back in hell, thus establishing the Council and the old order (pre-2014).

The setting: The city of Loom, a vast concrete jungle, full of tower-blocks and dark alleys. It’s the capital of a fictional country somewhere in western Europe. An ocean spans on the east border of the city and vast plains and the town of Thrope lay on the south. Loom is no stranger of violence, having been nearly demolished during the awakening of the Essence and then once more during the fall of Hell’s Gate. While it hosts Master Melody’s academy, it also has a very deep and intricate system of illegal trading network.

The Gates and Gatekeepers: The Gates were originally two, controlled by two Gatekeepers. They were created by Aaurus himself and served to keep the three races and three worlds apart. They did that by fuelling the essence of Heaven. Surface and Hell, defining who the angels, demons and humans are and what sets them apart. Heaven’s gate took on the appearance of a Violin and its player was Chime. She was the first to fall, killed by the Fleshshaper and causing the merging of Heaven and Surface. The second Gate was a Harp, played by Melody. Both were destroyed in 2014 by a madman called Judas, causing a huge amount of magic and Hellions to flood the Surface. The remains of both the Gates and Gatekeepers now live on in Hazumi and the Wielders’ Instruments.

Tech: slightly above our current level with no jets or laser-guns.

The Essence of the World: The name, given to the chimera that was created with the remains of all the dead Gates and Gatekeepers, as well as countless humans, demons and angels. She’s currently the only creature that can freely manipulate the essence around her with no boundaries, even to the point of bending one’s will. She also goes by the name of Hazumi.

The Academy: an establishment that teaches humans how to control shards of the Essence of the Wrold in order to keep the balance between powers on the Surface. Most of the time those shards take on the visage and functions of musical instruments that can soothe the soul, but they’re also deadly weapons with a conscious of their own.

The Council: the seven archangels that survived the Great War and some seraphs that served them. A formal military and bureaucratic institution consisting entirely of angels. It was crushed in 2014.

The Peacekeepers: a democratically elected committee of 3 representatives of each race. They negotiate the laws when it comes to cross-racial interactions and deal with punishments for those who have overstepped their rights.

The Problem

The strongest currency has always been life itself. For the past four centuries, the Peacekeepers were monitoring the entire populace for unauthorised murder and have ensured the culprit got what they deserved - be it punishment or mercy. The arrangement was creating a strong moral opposition from all races. The demons were by far the most dissatisfied with the arrangement as their personal ascendance to power required the essence of others. Naturally, the only way to prevent mass-murder was to ask the few angels that survived Judas’ insane prosecution to willingly donate their own essence for the sake of their brethren, leading to yet more conflict. In the midst of them all, as always, were the humans, the creatures whose very bodies and souls were changing as a response to the very air they breathed.

It was exactly those humans that would become the key to solving this new world’s problems. While many battled unwilling mutations, some brave individuals took on a self-sacrificial mission of keeping the peace in a world that has long forgotten what that meant. Those soldiers, initially called Musicians and later on – Wielders, were for a very long time the only thing that held the everything together. Each of them were bestowed with a shard of power directly from the Essence of the World and had learned the art of war and peace in what became the most influential establishment after the Angelic Council – Master Melody’s Academy for Fine Arts. At their graduation, those young warriors would go on to act as a task-force, hunting down and surrendering to the Peacekeepers anyone who stole a life for their own goals. Often times they managed to avoid disaster even before it happened.

But now a vital element of the equation is missing. The Essence of the World herself has disappeared without a trace. And with her – the Wielders’ ability to see all deaths at once. Luckily, while this is troubling news, the Instruments that she left her children are still functioning, allowing for a limited insight into the history of the crime scenes.

The biggest concern is that victims refuse to stay dead. Loom’s streets were being flooded with apparitions, indicating that something with the very process of dying itself has gone haywire. And while those ghosts pose only a minor threat, their mere presence interferes with the casting of most magic. And worst of all – they possess voices, a crescendo of which beats at Loom’s walls after dark. For most who remember, that is a very painful reminder of the first ghost in this world, the one responsible for the fall of Hell’s gate and the arrival of Hellions on earth.

So everyone has a good reason to worry. The wounds left by the death of loved ones are hard to heal if their restless spirits are still around to haunt your sleep. The everyday functions of the city are disturbed by the growing essence of death, which crawls at the very fabric of many creatures’ existence. And to make matters worse, with the Wielders’ lowered ability to control crime, murder is becoming fair game again.

You should be worried. Very, very worried.
Guys I know we still don't have rules but as we all know each other I figure they can wait. There are, however, 2 important things to note.

1. The 2 week rule for posts is something I'd like to stick to with some rare exceptions. The dates will be the 15th and the 30/31 of each month, except February.

2. If you'll be absent, can you put the period you'll be absent somewhere around the CS in the char section? Keeps it obvious and convenient and it's easy to edit out later. On that matter, I'll be completely absent between 4th and 20th August so if anyone needs me, make sure you get in touch before then.

Day One

Hours before dawn

Andri took a long drag of his cigarette and let the smoke linger in his mouth, probe the cracks between his teeth and seep into his tongue. It almost made him cringe in revulsion. He held it in for as long as he could, then swallowed, making it even worse.

He hated smoking.

But too often recently it was the only thing he hated more than himself.

Even now, he could feel the demon at the pit of his stomach, running its nails up and down the barrier of his consciousness, testing it. It remembered the days when the night made demons stronger.

Somewhere someone revved the engine of their bike and it let out a sharp, hoarse roar. It fed on the darkness and grew closer, weaving its way through the city’s streets until it passed him by and vanished once again, poured into the endless sound of traffic. Another bike awakened, perhaps a friend, or maybe a foe, and followed suit. Loom’s nocturne. Always dangerously mysterious. From the twentieth floor of his balcony, Andri couldn’t spot any trouble but he had no doubt that it was omnipresent in the capital, always quietly lurking beneath the streetlights. Like a worm waiting for the rain to surface, like his own infant curse…

One could only envy the angels’ ability to dive at will with no repercussions. They had been the sentinels of the city long ago. Now it was up to the likes of him to keep the sleepers safe… and he wasn’t sure what he’d even do if he faced one himself right now.

Things were not looking good. His future was fractured. His own soul was cracking, making a confusing kaleidoscope of what used to be a clear picture. A dozen questions plagued him with a dozen versions of his own face, the shiny cracks becoming paths, shrouded in darkness and uncertainty.

He was looking at his future through a fractured glass that was his own soul.

His consciousness was unstable. The bite only happened four days ago and today was the second day when he’d awoken to blood on his hands and chest. Animals, sure... But it was disturbing that he could taste the difference. It was disturbing that he could smell the exhaust of the bikes fifty meters up above the street. It was disturbing that when they’d gone to the hospital, the nurse looked at them with a questionable amount of sympathy and said something along the lines of “It’s all part of the natural cycle, you have to find a way to adapt” and assigned them a therapist instead of a doctor. One for both of them, too.

He’d smashed a window on the way out, which turned out to be his most expensive outburst so far.

Andri let out a puff of smoke and rested his head on his arms. To be quite frank, he was feeling a bit lost. Becoming a Wielder was a spontaneous decision… but getting possessed wasn’t part of the plan.

Now he was forced to stay in a hotel because he knew that his condition wouldn’t go unnoticed in the Academy. All it would take was someone with a transparent instrument, or a mental link with his shard, or even just someone with very finely attuned essence senses. He didn’t know how they would react to having a demon walk amongst them. Maybe one of Kanna’s missed calls held the answer. A non-human Wielder was a contradiction… yet he had the nagging feeling that this title was the only thing keeping him sane right now. What would he be without that job? How would Mary-Anne afford her medications?

Andri lifted his head, forcing the grim thoughts back, and let the cigarette drop from his hand, swirling violently as it headed for the ground far below. The ashes left a flaming trail that died before anyone even noticed it. A defiant smirk found his lips at the symbolism. He'd remembered something, a lyric from one of the Academy's many hymns. In the end they were “all just a crack in this castle of glass”. When he'd first heard it, he wasn’t sure why such a song had become one of Hazumi’s favourites. Now he thought he was beginning to get it.

Loom was a peculiar city. It was the city of angels, but also the city of demons, and the city of humans, and the city of chimeras. It was where the best and the worst things always happened, a place where dreams died and were reborn. Loom’s darkness was endless and so was its light. In the end Loom was simply a blank canvas, covered in colours.

It was no coincidence that Master Melody's Academy for Fine Arts was placed here. If one could learn to tell good and evil apart here, they could make it anywhere.

Tokarin wasn't very good at that just yet. Of course, her body was very hard to damage but her heart wasn't. And the next words that would come out of this newspaper agent’s mouth would send a tinge of guilt down the young angel’s spine.

“You got a picture of ‘Infamous Joe’?” His eyes were fixed on the picture, wide. He didn't see that she'd twitched the moment he touched the innocent piece of paper and was already trying to calm down.

“I never knew he was infamous. What did he do?” Her voice came out steady but that was only because she tried so hard.

“He’s raped five women already. The last one - yesterday.”

Oh Gods..

How did you get this? It must have been literally hours before-- ” Now he must have finally realised how pale her skin was and how hard her lip was quivering.

She didn't apologize before running out of his office because she didn't want to throw up on his desk. Sick mixed with tears in the bathroom sink. “Good job!” He shouted her way a few long minutes later and at that moment she thought he was a worst monster than Joe Wheeler.

Furious with herself and the world, Toki left the building through the twelfth story window. She was never coming to this agency again.
@Wind Wild Help me sleep pwease.

@Wind Wild couldn't help because she was asleep. xp

Now she's awake though! My second character is mostly completed and his CS now resides in the chara section.
I'll be adding a brief history of the academy once I get my brain to work properly.

I'll also be starting the IC on weeeeeeeeee....dnesday or thursday, again depending on the weather in Brainland.

The guys who have completed their sheets, pop them in the chara section. The ones who aren't done yet, fret not, you have time to finish them or you can start writing without them. I'll make the deadlines every Monday (if that's okay with you all?) so we have two full weekends to work on posts once things kick off. For the first posts we'll have two weeks and a bit so hopefully that should be enough time for inspiration to find us. We should establish the rules but does anyone have a problem with starting without any for the first posts? I'm still mulling them over and waiting for suggestions.

I think that's all I had to say for now.

Oh, remind me to tell you about absences.
Calling for character sheets and hoping to start the IC by mid-week~
Hahaha okay then, if you all agree, then no dice it is.
0. Is everyone okay with trying to start the IC by the end of the week? Even if the CSes aren't all ready.

Also, I'd like help with establishing rules, refer to the wishlist for that. So far the three major ones I can think of are as follows.

1. As a GM and lacking abnormally strong characters, I'll be the one placing all PC and NPC characters on a power curve that will be posted in the char. section. The mechanics of fighting said characters is to be negotiated with everyone but I suggest:

2. ...adopting a very simple dice-system where if you throw below 4 you don't succeed with your attempt or you lose the entire fight. We need something to make sure chance and luck play a real role in tough fights. (And definitely not all, I still prefer negotiating or just seeing how fights play out during a collab)

3. One post every two weeks minimum, to keep the story going. In case someone is stuck waiting for a collab response, maybe even just one week.

Voice your opinions here or however else you like but make sure I see them.

Adieu!
That's OK but you'll need to talk to me, Rtron, Syn and possibly Harrison as they all have bad guys and gals in mind and a semblance of a structure would be advisable. XD
Looking good, Merlin. :) Just have a typo-check when you get the chance and pin him on our chara board.

For the new players: Don't worry, characters with this amount of power will be restricted in the story so our little weaklings can shine. You definitely don't need to compete with this kind of character.

For the old players: I just realised with Hazumi missing there's nobody left to extract the Instruments from Wielders who commit misconduct. So, like, SHIT, we'll have Musicians go Renegade. And to make matters worse, they, like necromancers, can consume the essence of the dead and strengthen their own weapons.
