She ran.

She ran as fast as her feet could take her.

Images flashed through her head, making her feel sick to her stomach. She clenched her fist, her nails digging through her palm.

Crystal had no idea where she was going, but she was desperate for fresh air. Frustration filled her when she couldn't find the exit. The walls were thick and there were no windows anywhere. They must have been hiding underground.

She fell to her knees, taking deep breaths as sweat broke out from the sides of her face. Her lips were pale and her eyes looked empty as she stared at the floor beneath her. This all must have been a dream. Moments from now, she'd wake up in her bedroom and realize that this was all just a dream. A nightmare.

The thought comforted her for a split second before darkness and hopelessness seemed to drown her. It felt like she was drowning and sinking slowly to the depths of the ocean. There was only darkness and silence. She felt trapped.

Crystal slowly leaned against the wall, her eyes staring blankly at nothing in particular. She felt too weak to even raise a finger. Her mind wandered back to the events that took place, all too fast and all too surprising. There was no time to register everything.

For the first time in years, she discovered that she wasn't the only one who was gifted. That was supposed to be exciting. Who knew it would end so tragically? Two of them were murdered and now they were in hiding. What was life going to be like after this? Is she going to spend the rest of her life hiding in an underground basement? Crystal hugged her knees to her chest and buried her face in the dark hallow.

A drop of tear escaped from the corner of her eye, but she didn't know what caused it. She didn't feel sad. She just felt.. empty.

Maybe it was the regret that was slowly creeping up on her. She didn't do anything. She could have done something to save them. Anything. She could have stalled things until help arrived. But she didn't do anything. She only stared with wide eyes and horror, her feet completely glued to the ground.

Her failure to react caused two lives. Lives that mattered. A fiery-tempered man that could engulf himself in bright and spectacular flames. He manipulated fire like it was is his toy. She could still remember his glowing brown eyes, looking captivating and deadly. And his brother, a good-hearted man who could command earth. Two special people -- gone in a matter of seconds.

Before she could even register what happened, she was engulfed in darkness and brought to safety, but that was nothing to celebrate about. The lifeless bodies and the faces of her dead acquaintances continued to plague her mind.
Sorry for the inactivity! Haven't had WiFi since June 23. I'll write a post now.
Crystal removed her gloves and dropped them to the ground. She rubbed her hands together, hoping that if she got a better feel of them, maybe she'd gain more control of her powers. That was obviously not the case because removing them didn't change a thing. The temperature continued to drop and ice slowly blanketed the ceiling. She cussed mentally as she tried to figure a way out of this.

Crystal's train of thoughts broke when warm hands grabbed hers quite roughly. Heaps of fog seeped through her hands where he touched them. The heat felt hot enough to melt a huge chunk of ice in just a matter of seconds, but as seconds passed, it turned into the kind of warmth your blanket would give you on a winter night. In other words, it felt very comfortable. Crystal scowled; did she really just think that his hands were comfortable? The thought alone was outrageous. "Let me go." She pulled her hands away, giving up when she realized there was no way she could beat him in physical strength alone. "You too cold, Curt? You can hop on out. It's a little too balmy in here for myself. Might break a sweat soon." She turned her gaze towards Chris and noticed that his face was paling, and only then did she realize how cold the room had gotten. Her suppressed powers were leaking out of her like crazy, and it was turning the whole room into a freezer. She knew she had to get out of this place soon, but she could only do that once she successfully manages to get rid of this persistent fire-dude.

"So, you do something with ice then? Can't have you going out there if you're gonna freeze all the regulars. You're already turning dear ol Curtie into a Curtsicle." Crystal glared at him; her vibrant caribean blue eyes staring at his amber ones. It somehow looked like fire was dancing in his eyes, and she noticed the vein on his neck that slowly glowed bright red, as if lava was flowing through his veins. He must have really been enjoying all this. "Sorry hun, I don't know what you're talking about." She said with a challenging tone, refusing to break eye contact. A thin sheet of ice began to cover his hands, slowly running up to his forearms. She knew the coldness had no effect on him, but the glint of excitement in his eyes when he found out she was like him amused her. "So Crystal can make things get cold. That's cool, pun intended." Crystal couldn't help but roll her eyes at his joke. Curt left soon after and she was left alone with Ash, much to her distaste.

Thick fog surrounded them, and the ice that lay on his warm skin produced more as the ice slowly sublimated. It would be very harmful for anyone to enter this room and inhale all the carbon dioxide. Now she wondered if Ash was somehow immune to that; he did not look fazed by it -- which was a good thing. He was stubborn and annoying, but she surely didn't want him dead because of her. "Hope you've had enough of all these little tricks. I'm leaving." She said with a monotonic voice, clearly showing how uninterested she was about this whole thing. Crystal was a little bit worried about what she would do with the frozen stock room, but she was too stressed to think of a solution and decided she'd think about it later. Great. Just great. She breathed deeply, feeling very defeated.
Before Crystal could even lay a finger on the doorknob, she felt the ground move beneath her; the sudden motion causing her to slightly lose her balance. "Was that an earthquake?" She asked as she turned around to look at the both of them. The look on their faces answered her question. No.

"Crystal. I know its hard to believe, but just listen. Ash and I aren't doing any kind of magicians." This time, it was the guy named Curtis speaking to her; the nicer one between the two -- obviously. Crystal turned around, not wanting to hear anymore of this madness. She turned the doorknob and was ready to get out of there, but the door wouldn't budge. She slammed the door with her palm out of frustration. Looks like she didn't have a choice but to confront the situation instead of running from it.

Crystal turned around and slowly met his gaze. "Ash is convinced that you can do things like we can. Its fine if you can't, heaven knows that Ash has been wrong before, but we now have a problem. You now know what we do. If you are like us then I feel like its common courtesy that you share with us. If you aren't then that's fine too, however either way you aren't leaving until I feel like our secret is safe." Crystal stayed silent for almost a full minute, mentally debating with herself about the right thing she should do in this situation. A sigh escaped her lips, and she shrugged before leaning against the door. "This is nonsense. I never asked either of you to share your lovely secrets with me -- though I appreciate it. It's pretty cool." She said casually while making hand gestures. "But whether I have abilities like you or not, it is my choice if I should share it with you. Just like you made a choice to share yours." Crystal stood up straight and crossed her arms, trying her best not to glare at him. "Your secret is safe with me. If I break my word, you can easily hurt me, right? So why worry?" She asked him seriously without breaking eye contact. "Now I have a job to get back to. I'd appreciate it if you let me leave." This time, she looked at Ash. Knowing that if anyone was going to be stubborn about this, it would be him.

As calm and collected Crystal may have looked on the outside, deep inside, she had so many unanswered questions. Just who were they? For the first time in four years, she finally met others like her. She didn't know how to feel. Was she supposed to be happy or worried? Now she was certain that there were more like them out there. Just how many of them existed? So many thoughts and questions crossed her mind. She was starting feel uneasy about the whole thing. All of it was just too much to process in on night. A bad one, might she add. She needed at least a week or two to think about the whole thing. Or better, escape it.

Crystal was snapped out of her trance when she noticed a thin layer of fog starting to surround them. The temperature had drastically dropped, and a thin sheet of ice started to cover her palms beneath her leather gloves. Her eyes widened a little, and her breathing started to pick up the pace. She did her best to look calm and normal in front of the two, making sure she didn't give anything away. No, this can't be happening right now. Breathe. She took a deep breath and concentrated. The dry ice that covered her palms slowly went back to its gaseous form; the fog escaping from the openings of her gloves. She quickly turned around to hide them. She cleared her throat and reached for the doorknob, "I really have to go. Please." She told them with a serious tone in her voice -- and maybe a hint of desperation. Her hand started to fidget, and her heart started to beat rapidly. She swallowed down a lump in her throat, doing her best to calm herself.

The room got colder as seconds passed.

Crystal had just finished preparing the latte when out of nowhere, a deep voice broke through her concentration. "You're needed in the back, honey." Before she was given time to respond -- or even react, she was dragged towards the backroom, stopping only for a moment when the dude went to grab the latte. She protested as soon as the door was shut closed behind her, "Okay, what the fuck is going-"

"Show us what you can do," He interrupted.

Okay, how many times was he going to interrupt her? That was the second time tonight. Crystal sighed in frustration before raising an eyebrow. She wasn't sure whether he was requesting her to do something inappropriate, or if he was asking her to show them how to make their favorite latte. "You're gonna have to be more specific than that." She replied; her voice showing a hint of annoyance. "I know you can do something. Yormie wouldn't be int-" Crystal didn't even hear a word he was saying. Her attention was drawn towards the snake that was popping out of his jacket. Even worse, it was staring at her intently. She couldn't help but think that this man had such odd taste.

He shoved the snake back down into his jacket, bringing Crystal back to reality. "Sorry, what were you sa-"

"The stupid snake wouldn't be so curious about you. Spill, what can you do?" He asked quite forcefully. By now, Crystal was beyond annoyed. First, he kept interrupting her. Second, he kept asking her to show him what she can do, without even explaining exactly what he meant. Crystal glared at him, not wanting to say another word. He was stubborn, and he didn't seem like the type to listen either. Any efforts to talk would just go to waste.

Crystal was about to turn around and leave, when suddenly, the man lifted his hand up. She looked at him questioningly, wondering what he was trying to do. Her eyes grew wide when flames started to dance in his palm, slowly taking the shape of a straw hat. Her mouth was ajar, but she didn't notice until her mouth began to feel dry. "Now share yours" He said; his amber eyes showing a hint of red as they reflected the flames. Crystal cleared her throat, trying to appear calm, but deep inside, she was filled with questions and wonder. Is that what she thought it was? No, it can't be.

Her breathing hitched, and her palms began to sweat. He caught her off guard, but now she was doing a pretty god job of not showing any hint of nervousness in her demeanor. She looked bored, uninterested, and calm. "Well, boys. This has been a very eventful evening. Thank you for showing me your magic trick. Unfortunately, I'm not interested in those things, mister magician." She said with a small curtsy and a smile.

There were two possibilities in this matter. He either had supernatural abilities like her, or he was some kind of magician; the latter being much more convincing. A lot of magicians brought snakes with them, right? Either way, she didn't spend 4 years concealing her abilities just to get disclosed by two guys she knew nothing of -- besides their favorite drinks in the cafe.

Crystal turned around and reached for the doorknob. The sooner she was out of here, the better.

"- almond milk. Pretty please?"

Crystal's vision re-focused on the costumer that was sitting in front of her, making her realize that she had been spacing out for God knows how long. "I'm sorry. What-"

"Usual."

Before she could finish talking, another one of their frequent costumers came in the cafe; drawing attention to his clothes, hair, and -- hold on, is that a snake? A shiver ran down her spine when she made eye-contact with the animal for a split second, before it fell back into the man's jacket. It's not that Crystal disliked snakes, she just wasn't so into animals without fur, you could say.

Gangster-man, a nickname she came up with the first time she met him, dragged his brother to the backroom. She sighed, feeling very defeated. Just what is up with this day? She thought to herself with a scowl plastered on her face. This probably marks the beginning of a good life. She rolled her eyes and shook her head as she walked towards the counter, calling the attention of the other barista, "The usual for those two." She told her, not even knowing what the usual was. Unlike Crystal, she seemed to love her job very much.

Crystal has been working in this cafe for awhile now, but she has never payed attention to names, or usual orders of their frequent costumers. I mean, did she really have to? She wasn't interested, nor was she planning to keep working in the cafe after senior year. It would just take up unnecessary space in her brain.

Crystal was about to head to the backroom to grab some more coffee beans when she realized that the two guys were still in there. She got goosebumps when the word Incest came to mind. Damn, she really had to stop putting meaning into things. Crystal shrugged and began to take the order of the next person in line, making sure that she payed attention this time.
