"Oi! You're some of the mages, right? Can ya give me a hand with this?"

Ling jumped and looked around. Sure enough, a woman from Hayes' crew was standing there with one hand on her hip and the other held up in front of her, covered in... something. Not oil, it was a solid. Black-grey colour, a stark contrast to the tanned skin of her forearm. Residual shadow essence from the storm. Must have pierced the hull somewhere. Ling approached her. "Um, yes, let me see that... hmm." She prodded the hand and fingers in several places. Nothing changed. "How did this happen?"

"Blasted spike of black magic punched clean through the ship a deck below. Then it exploded, and while there was no more harm done, it turned a full section pitch-black. Can't see or hear anything through it, and ya can't touch it without getting covered in this gunk. Can ya do anything about it, miss? Need to clear it out before something else tears the hole even bigger."

Ling nodded, though she was slightly uneasy about the task. She wasn't the best manipulator of shadow magic, but she couldn't really back down from it. "Lead the way."

Sure enough, one floor below, the hallway was blocked off by a plain wall of opaque, black-grey shadow essence. Ling raised her eyebrows. "Interesting that a single 'spike' can do that. Now, I'm gonna need you to be a little patient with me on this one. I'm no Shadow specialist, but I'll do what I can." She stepped past the skysailor and raised her hands, holding them out an inch or so from the wall of magic. She tried to focus on nothing but the wall, willing it to disperse. It shimmered, rippling from where her hands would have touched it, but settled back into place and held steady. She tried again, scrunching up her face in concentration. This time the ripples were stronger, but still very small compared to the full size of the wall.

"Blast it. You sure this is something you can handle, miss Ling?"

The alchemist stepped back a pace, drawing one of the vials of blue potion from her belt. "If this booster vial isn't enough, we might be stuck with it until a proper Nightshade can attend to it. Best keep back." She uncorked the vial, held it up briefly to examine it, and drank it in one. She paused briefly, waiting for its effects to take hold. One... two... three...

Then her senses opened up, and she felt a surge of power. Shifting shapes emerged in the shadowy wall. Interlinking lines like a massive, twisted spiderweb ran all over the surface. The whole block of essence was still shifting, wild, untamed. Half a dozen lines converged on a single point in the wall. Ling stretched out a hand to reach it, and the lines began to splinter off in her vision and form more tiny connections.

"Aha. Here's the weak point. If I try to dispel it from here..." Ling brought her other hand to bear, trying the dispersal spell again. The ripples were stronger, running across the full surface of the wall. But it wasn't quite enough. So Ling pushed her glasses up her nose and tried a fourth time, clenching her teeth and shutting out everything else to focus.

The essence wasn't co-operating. It was wild magic, resisting Ling's efforts to bend it to her will. She felt it push back. And when it did, some of the splinters that she could see running through the wall turned... solid, was the best way to describe it. Chunks of the wall fell out, like glass shards breaking free from a window. Ling pushed harder, trying to outmatch its resistance. If she hadn't had the booster potion, she would never have been able to do it. But under her forced dispersal of the magic binding the essence together, the wall was slowly but surely giving way.

Behind Ling, the skysailor backed up to a doorway, uncertain of what was happening. More shards popped out of the wall, clattering to the floor. Ling changed her tactic. Instead of focusing on the splinters, she began taking hold of the space between each line and yanking it away, pulling it down piece by piece. After a few minutes of this, Ling felt the potion's bolstering power begin to fade, but she pressed on. Eventually, after she tore out one particularly large piece, the wall collapsed entirely, leaving shards of shadowy essence scattered throughout the hallway and a clear path to the rest of the deck.

And a large tear in the side of the ship, from where the spike had punched through. Cautiously, and breathing audibly harder than usual, Ling began gathering up the shards and tossing them out the hole. No sense in leaving them on board... although she wished she'd gotten her alchemical gloves out of her pack.
"I'd personally like to strengthen my team a bit more before anything else. Is there any location where I can accomplish that without causing the local wildlife to swarm me like macrophages after a bacterium? ... Er... I guess a less obscure description would be 'up to my neck in them', but..."

Lief just chuckled. "You don't want to get swarmed. That's fair. You could try your luck against a Trainer or two on the main road, rather than take the path deeper into the woods. Might be a bit of a challenge, but it'll be good for building up your Pokémon. Any other questions? Takers for the sightseeing?"

"Welp, I know which way I wanna go!" The new guy, Ezra, cut in at this point, taking a couple of steps toward the path away from the open road. Alix was inclined to take the same path, in the interest of being up to her ears in Grass Pokémon. There had to be something here that she could coax out of hiding, even with a Fire-type comfortable in her arms.

Evie checked her pockets, then mumbled something about leaving something back on the road out of Regala, and dashed off in a hurry. Alix raised an eyebrow - how do you forget something so soon? - but said nothing, instead moving to stand with Ezra. With that, the four remaining Trainers seemed split up easily enough: or at least, that was how Ato and Lief saw it. "All right, you guys seem to be set on your paths. Give a yell if you need me for anything... and don't stray too far from the path, you two." This last comment was directed at Alix and Ezra, though the former just smiled and led the way.

The winding path peeled away from the main road almost instantly, leading into thick patches of grass and the occasional clearing. Alix headed straight into the grass, rustling through several patches and coming up empty-handed save for the occasional Caterpie or Sewaddle. And the Bug Pokémon just ran away as soon as she got closer. Alix didn't mind that - much like Dark-types avoided her for her Fighting specialty, Bug-types left her alone because she was also a Flying specialist - but she wanted to find something that she could train up properly.

"Maybe the proper Grass-types are further away from the path?" she mused aloud, getting a chirp from Jen in response as she pondered the thought. "There can't be just the Bugs in here..."

Back on the main road, Ato craned his neck to see if he could see anyone further along the road. "Hmm... well, I can see a couple of people around. Don't let me keep you, though, you guys have at 'em." Sure enough, the main road through the forest was playing host to several Trainers. Some were battling each other, others poking around in the short grass where it overran the well-worn trail.
"Course that storm did do a number on my robes. I really shouldn't have worn them out like that. So yeah, I guess that's one reason to go in town...but yeah."

"The storm wasn't the only factor... I rarely deal with people getting all up in my face, let alone stinking harpies." Ling pointed out the set of talon marks in her own clothing as she spoke. "If this is the kind of encounter Commander Hayes has in store for us further down the line, or if things get any worse than they were in that fight, then we're all gonna need new outfits within the week." Thinking back on her packing choices, she gave silent thanks that she'd had the sense to stuff a second set of clothes in her pack. Apart from providing padding for the more fragile of her tools, they were likely going to see some use.

"Speaking of the Commander... what in Alainia's name was he thinking when he gave the order to just drop us out of the sky like he did?" Ling got to her feet and took up her crossbow again, detaching its quiver and stowing both the weapon and its ammunition in their holsters. "I mean, sure, if it stops the harpies and the drakes from swarming the ship, that's fine, but there must have been an easier way to do it without crashing into the ground. Maybe just drop altitude enough to get out of the Scar? Or was the storm large enough to reach the ground below? I didn't see much of it."
@Krauxis: No worries. If ya don't have the time, ya don't have the time.

If you like I can figure out a way to easily write Evie out of the story.
Apologies for the delay, everyone. Took me a while to figure out what I was doing with the most recent of posts. (And distracted by games and such. Like ya do.) I'll try to write transitionary posts a little faster in the future.
"Which one of y'all's from Unova? Heard a lot of awesome stuff about that place... Oh, uh, I'm Ezra, of the house descendant Daly. I'm a representative of the River's Flow Dojo in Mystriver. And this is Brie."

"Alix Pearce, of Eyria. I suppose you could say I represent the Feather Dance Dojo, if we're discussing where we trained," Alix introduced herself to the newcomer. "Oh, and these are Jen and... well, I haven't thought of a name for Kestra yet." Both Pokémon looked up as they were mentioned, but remained quiet for now.

At Robyn's question, asking about her new catch, Alix took a moment to examine the sleeping pink Pokémon at the feet of the Unova girl. She wasn't sure what it was, but it seemed vaguely catlike. That explained the sleeping habits. "Can't say I have an answer for you there, Robyn. Though the Pokédex probably has information on it." Kestra hopped a little closer, observing the dozy creature, but Alix recalled the little bird into his Poké Ball in case a scuffle broke out.

"I'm set to catch up with Ato when you guys are ready."

- Several Minutes Later -

It wasn't long until Shinsuke and Evie each caught up with everyone else at the forest's edge, and the Trainers all moved on as a group, following Ato until the road split into two paths. The most prominent of the two was a straight and clear path through the woods, dotted with the occasional Trainer rustling through the thick grass that was covering a good portion of the road.

The second path, however, was far more interesting to Alix, as it led away deeper into the forest. Maybe there were rarer finds in the tangle of trees, vines, and grass. Alix's musing was interrupted, however, as a man in an orange and black outfit - a Pokémon Ranger - approached the group.

"Excuse me, Trainers, but I noticed your differing styles of clothing and choices of Pokémon," the Ranger began.

"Easy there, Lief. They're new to the area, on their way through to Verdan," Ato chipped in before the others could speak.

"Ah, Ato. Good to see you again. But I digress." Lief looked past Ato to the others. "I can help you find the more unusual landmarks in the forest, if you wish to know more about them. There are two in particular: the standing stones, where Eevee and Chromera tend to gather, and the Togepi Garden. Though the Garden is best left to one or two people at a time, just in case the Togetic and Togekiss become too disturbed and seal off their home."

Ato turned to the older, but less experienced, group of five. "Well, it's like he says. You can take a trip to one of the landmarks, or you can head off to go looking for Pokémon on your own. Just like before, I'll be on the open road if you need me for anything."

Ling set her crossbow aside as Nataly mentioned her fellow Alchemist. Tristam, Tristam... where had she heard that name? Oh, right, he was an Adept, like herself, and he ran the distillery down the hall from her lab. He didn't seem to do all that great a job, judging by the smell. Or was all alcohol like that? Ling didn't know. She wasn't the type to mix up something to impede a fellow student's focus.

"Yeah, I do spend most of my time working on my recipes, when I'm not out buying more vials 'cause I smash so many of them," she eventually answered, taking back the empty vial and stowing it in a loop on her belt. "Tristam's... well, average, really. I mean no disrespect, but if you want to drink the cheap and quick stuff until you start seeing flying pink and blue weasels, you ask him. If you want something to get rid of your soul-crushing headache the next morning so you can get your work done, you come to me. Restoratives, Invigorators, All-Nighter Tonics, you need any kind of booster to get through the day, I can make it." She hoped she didn't sound too prideful... or scornful of her fellow Alchemist.

"Though I do agree I need to find some sort of component that gives my potions a better flavour. I'll write that down later: look into sweeter things with no alchemical properties that'll throw off the intended effect." Sugar, whether raw or refined, turned Ling's healing potions useless - it countered the herbal components - and it was already a key ingredient in her All-Nighters. Maybe a fruit juice of some kind would work. She filed that thought away for later use.

"What about yourself? Do you visit any of the towns near the Academy?"
"If no one else is gonna have a drink of that, I'll take a swig. After dealing with all that bull, I'd even take some of the leftovers from last night."

Ling couldn't claim to know what Nataly had been drinking the night before... and wasn't sure she wanted to find out. She passed the roughly half-full vial to her fellow mage all the same. "There you go. Have as much as you need, 'cause I've got a couple more restoratives and can make a new batch if I need to."

"Rest easy mages...though it seems most of you were not even rattled by our landing. Just a few bumps and bruises for most of you! Shake it off like some good soldiers, and I think you might just be warrior material."

"You kidding me? That was terrifying at times. I'd take another fight with harpies over a landing that rough." The comment was made as Commander Hayes left the room. "Although... I get the impression the good Commander intends to get us into more scraps. Preferably without the crashing and burning, right? Um, no offence to Silvana, of course. She can do all the burning she likes..." Ling shut herself up. More rambling. To try and make herself look busy, she drew Kei and examined the weapon closely for any signs of damage it might have suffered. It seemed to be fine, though there were a few scuff marks from where Ling had hastily shoved her weapon into its holster.
Right. Cold has been dealt with, new post is up. I'll wait for a bit of input from everyone else before moving everyone to the forest. Just in case anyone wants a second catch, a short battle or some more interaction between characters.

Also heard through the grapevine that Krauxis has vanished for a little bit. I'm sure they won't mind if I move Evie along with the others.
"Tor?"

"Well, we've been here about an hour, Jen, and nothing else has shown up. Maybe it's time we round up the others and push forward to the forest. Find a nice Grass-type to join the team for a while."

"Trra. Kest kest!" What? Am I not enough? The newer of Alix's acquisitions flicked his feather-crest as he hopped about. Alix was already beginning to interpret the action as being similar to a human raising their eyebrows.

"Oh, relax, Kestra, you're fine. You just can't handle some types that I know we'll face later down the line." Kestra didn't respond, instead picking at a small clump of grass. Alix, however, stretched and got to her feet. "Okay, team, time to go. Can't sit around on the first route forever." At her words, Jen hopped up and dashed to Alix's boot, chirruping and picking at the laces. She was a cute sight, if a bit of a menace to the knots. Alix picked up the little Fire-type, but sighed all the same.

"Jen, I'm not gonna carry you the whole time. You'll get lazy if you don't run around a bit."

"Tor torchictor?"

"I get it, we're a new partnership, but once you get to be a big strong Combusken you'll be too big to carry."

"Rrr." Jen didn't seem to care. She was making herself comfortable. Alix just ruffled her feathers with her free hand and started off, beckoning to Kestra to follow. The little bird was quick at her heels, occasionally taking flight for short distances a couple of feet above the grass. The grass soon became the road, as Alix led the way further out from the city, towards the bridges spanning the river. She spotted several of the others along the way, waving to them as she passed.

Until she crossed one of the bridges, when she heard the sounds of a battle ahead. Ato, too, was hurrying to investigate, with his Mareep in tow. Alix, the faster of the two, was the first to find Robyn standing there with her Petilil in her arms, and a stranger standing nearby with what appeared to be a Water-type Pokémon of some kind on his shoulders.

"Well then. Looks like you took care of everything," she noted with a smile.

"First battle's always one of the toughest. I'll be at the forest's edge when you guys are ready." Ato excused himself, turning back to the road. He probably just wanted to get the trip with the older Trainers over and done with, Alix mused. Either way, the point that the group should get moving remained.
