Personality:
Natsu at first glance seems like a perfectly nice individual who is sweet and loves kittens and rainbows. However with a closer inspection she is actually borderline sadistic and overly obsessive about her seemingly random muses. She is an artist first and everything else second. For the sake of her art she would sacrifice everything. Beauty is important to her but defining beauty has been something that has posed quite a challenge. "What is beauty? Is if function? Is it form? Is it intangible? Is it subjective? Objective? Can we ever really know?" Those are questions she asks herself every day. A few things she has come to the conclusion of is that strength is a form of beauty and that is objective. Beyond that it isn't so clear.
As an artist first she still is capable of having semi-normal relationships with her fellows. She has a few friends even though she can be insufferable if she goes on an artsy binge. Randomness is to her both an asset and a fault. Life is never dull with her around but it is also frustrating. On one day she might be trying to make a sculpture totally out of shaved pieces of cacti and the next day she may be attempting to test the number of books it would take to crush a vase made of hopes and dreams.
History:
Natsu was born in the human realm three hundred years ago. She had an older brother and the two of them were the children of a semi-successful painter. Their mother had died when they were young and this sent their father into a depression. His art suffered and slowly he lost favor in the eyes of both the public and the lord that had commissioned him for several paintings before hand. The life that they had lived was very quickly declining as they were removed from their well furnished home to a far less inviting home. Eventually they were homeless. Her brother who was nearly 12 years old and she who was only 8 were locked in their room one day. They attempted to get out but they were unable. Their father had locked up all of the doors and nailed boards over the windows. He then dumped sake all over himself and his paintings. With a drunken laugh he light himself and the rest of his house on fire.
The two children who had burned to death were able to have their spirits leave this place. The father that had killed his two children however was unlucky and his soul chain bound him permanently to a piece of art that had miraculously managed to survive the fire. Soon after he became a hollow. Thankfully neither of the children had to see this as they were transferred to the soul society in a timely manner.
Years later they both discovered their talents for spiritual power and subsequently entered the soul society's Shinigami Academy. Her brother struggled more than she did. However they both made it through. He was her light and her world. He was there when she needed someone to cry on. He was there with a hot meal and a warm bath at home. He supported her and taught her how to paint. He taught her how to smile. He told her everything would be alright.
They say lighting never strikes in the same place twice. If that is true then Natsu must be a lighting rod. In a freak accident shortly after they both became official Shinigami her brother and her were attacked by A grade hollows. She was quickly over taken but her brother put up a better fight. However it wasn't something that could take down the hollows. Help arrived but just a moment too late as her brother lay on the ground bleeding out. The light in his eyes had already faded. His body was warm but growing cold. A voice inside her head spoke to her.
"Stab him..." It said in a low hushed tone. The tone was familiar sounding.
"Bring him into yourself. Make him your zanpakuto..." Without question she pulls out her Zanpakuto and stabs her brother's body in the chest. The blade pierces his heart and suddenly all of the blood in the body was sucked into the sword. Her naturally white aura was tainted with red. Suddenly she was inside her inner world for the first time. A man in a white kimono turns to her and she can see it is her brother. He embraces her and pats her on the head.
"Now I am Gakutenchi. We will be together ...forever..." Relationships/Friendships/Rivalries/Siblings:

Spirit Appearance:
Spirit Personality/Goals: Her zanpakuto appears to her just as her dead brother. There is some mystery to the validity of her claim that she was able to absorb his soul into her zanpakuto. However in all forms he acts just as her memories indicate her brother acting. He is encouraging to her and focuses on nurturing her creativity and art. He feeds on beauty and new experiences. Blood however is his first love. Blood is the paint of life. Bodies are simply the brushes and lives are the art.
Inner world:
Her inner world is a great forest of constantly falling sakura petals. However these sakura petals are pure white. Gakutenchi explained it to her that each and every falling white sakura petal is blank not white. It is blank because it has yet to be painted. The whole world that is her inner world represents each and every passing moment of her life that is ripe with opportunity to be filled with creativity and color.

Shikai appearance: The shikai looks more or less like the sealed version. However it has a visible pink aura.
Bankai appearance: none as of yet.
Shikai skills:

1. Vivid Illusion. She can cast the aura of the sword to create vivid illusions based off of what she can picture in her own head.
2. Blood Illusions. The illusions she creates can temporarily become real but with limitations. First the limitaiton is that the amount of time and power of the illusions made real depend on the amount and power of the blood used to "paint" them. The process works by offering blood to the sword. The best way to use this is by using the opponents blood. This provides her free fuel and a catalyst to create her art. However if she uses someone else's blood she has only a small amount of control over what it is that is created.
An example of this is that if an opponent's was offered to the sword as paint she could only vaguely instruct the images. The rest would be based off of the personality/memories of the person. A more specific version of illusions based off of an opponent's blood will be listed below.
If she uses her own blood she can create more or less any image she wishes. The size and power of the illusion is proportional to the amount of blood she gives. She can't "increase" the total amount of spiritual power between her illusions and herself. She couldn't create an illusion of the head captain and have him fight on the same level. But she could create a perfect mirror of herself and she would simply run out of reiatsu twice as fast.
3. Let me paint your nightmare. This is an ability where she takes the blood of an enemy to create a "real" illusion. She swings the blood off of the sword around her on the ground. She can command it to bring forth the most heinous idols of fear from the victim. She doesn't know what will be created until afterwards but it will be totally based on the fears, personality or memories of the person's blood.
4. Memory reading. She can take blood from a victim and use it to create an illusion that matches their most recent memories. She can play them out physically so everyone can see of she can simply view them herself by licking the blood off of her sword.
