“Coffee. Here. Now.”
“Yes sir.” Rae replied, silently rolling her eyes at her current employer. She had been his assistant for five months, and knew that he liked his coffee at exactly 9 o’clock. Even when she held the cup in her hand, giving it to him, he still barked the order. If it weren’t for the excellent pay and connections, Rae would have left ages ago. She was already putting out feelers for the rival company, just in case.
“Girl. Do you have the files I asked for?” She handed them over.
“Also, Mr. Gates stopped by the other day. I told him you were out, but he wasn’t very happy about that. He told me to tell you, ‘You have five days left to pay up, otherwise…’ or something ominous like that.”
“Pah!” He scowled. “Just because he has a little blackmail does not give him the right to…” The rest of the sentence descended into grumbles. “I’m the CEO of a highly successful company with connections. Why aren’t any of those connections with the police? Let me tell you, girl. The police are useless. Money is where the power is.”
“Of course it is sir.” Rae agreed, smiling. She turned and left the office, still smiling. Money is power? What an idiot. She thought, There’s more to it than that. A lot more.
