The strap of the pack slid off Zoe's shoulder as she allowed the heavy weight to land on the floor with a dull thump. It was over. The three months traversing back and forth from camp to camp was done. It had taken every ounce of conviction, but the summit bid had failed; and there was no one left at base camp now that the season was coming to an end.
