Inspired by the likes of Jet Set/Grind Radio, Mirror’s Edge, and the best of dystopian cyberpunk fiction like Neal Stephenson’s “Snow Crash” and the comic series “Transmetropolitan”, not to mention the most hilarious film ever, Pirate Radio, I bring you:

"Tee, I think we lost them!" the young green-haired man rasped, a hand clenched over his black Protot7peTM jacket as his eyes wildly searched the buzzing chaos behind them. Bright modern screens depicting models demonstrating the latest must-have gadget on endless repeat clashed with neon signs, the streaks of light caused by vehicles and drones dashing through space occupied just seconds ago by a pedestrian, and the endlessly diverse crowd that swelled and breathed across the platforms and buildings that made up Floor Fifty-Eight, Shinjuku District. Nothing. Or at least, no sign of the unmarked individuals who had caught the tail-end of the young man and his partner as they fled their hidey-hole on Floor Sixty-Two seven blocks over. It was strange... the MetPo usually were so damn proud and excited to be killing that they wore their uniforms with pride. But if not the MetPo, then... "Tee, you think that...?"

"Shut up, Ruu. I'm listening." Ruu's partner Tee was crouched on the ground, one hand pressed to his ear while the other held onto a complex device that looked like a heavily modified radio broadcaster. It was normally useless to try and hear anything over the sheer noise of Metro Tokyo, but with the special device embedded in Tee's ear, he could cut out most frequencies except the ones he was looking for - the sound of spider drones crawling over the concrete exteriors of the skyscrapers. After a long moment, he stood up with a smile and turned to his partner. "Hey, Tee, I don't hear the drones so the fuckin' MetPo must'a lost us, ya? You can't shut down, Vibe Radio Sixty-Two, isn't that rig-"

Ruu suddenly realized that Tee was no longer where Tee had been standing moments before. In fact, what was left of Tee completely covered the wall behind Ruu in a macabre display of violence. Whirling around all too late, Ruu saw the perpetrator of his best friend's murder just as the bio-chemically charged round entered his chest. As he slumped to the ground, Ruu could feel the nanobots released by the charge chewing away at his body. He had maybe fifteen seconds to live. Rolling over in agony, he blurrily saw the woman who had fired the gun reach down to his ear and pluck out his listening device. He opened his mouth to scream, to ask a question, to say something... but nothing came out but an agonized moan. The woman looked down without pity and snorted.

"Would'a worked, kid, if we were the Met. But we ain't the Met." And with that, Ruu knew no more. The woman calmly deployed her clean-up drone, and within a minute the only trace of the murders were blood stains that merely added to those already covering the concrete. Turning briskly, she walked the one block to the "chute", one of the aptly named vertical tunnels that allowed for garbage disposal to the Graveyard, and dropped the remains in. Seconds later, all that was left of "Vibe Radio Sixty-Two" was an empty apartment soon to be seized by desperate neighbours.

This is...

Intro

Welcome to the year 2134. Humankind has done the miraculous, leapfrogging off of the Earth and into space. The last three decades have seen millions of tiny, fragile, all-so-moral earthlings escape the tomb they dug for themselves with pollution, waste, and most of all war. These privileged few have started the exodus, but there is no guarantee, especially not the likelihood, that humanity will make a full escape. Though the nuclear holocaust that devastated the Earth’s population in 2084 failed to produce either the doomsday or send the remnants of human civilization back into the dark ages, it did centralize the three billion remaining to a few self-governing megacities holding upwards of a hundred million people each. To name but a few of the main ones: New Amsterdam on the old Antarctic shelf, the Chicago-Detroit-Toronto Metropolitan Area, the twin cities of Paris-Brussels, the sprawling masses of poverty and suffering in both Lagos and Cairo, the mechanical marvel of Metro La Paz in former Paraguay, and the ‘natural’ New Sydney in the terra-formed Australian desert. These new megacities were formed to house the millions displaced by rising ocean levels, and those forcibly displaced to make the most efficient use of the arable land left behind. There is natural life in these new edifices of concrete and steel, but is tucked away behind miles of pipes and roads and skyscrapers, each layered on top of the next to firmly segregate the fortunate from the less fortunate. The struggle of mother earth against her most rebellious sons, however, is not so easily suppressed…

Some more fluff and intro-stuff to make the following OOC more understandable.

The important stuff for RPing: the playground is 3D. Thus, keep that in mind when on a battlefield or doing something cool. I've kept landmarks out of it for the most part, so feel free to invent your own; they'll be important so that characters can rationally expect to meet up again in the chaos of Metro Tokyo without relying on too much technology.

The following is a brief overview of a few groups that will certainly be present in the RP in some form or another. Improvise and add on to them as you will. I haven't added resistance groups like Radio Free Metropolis, as those will be first introduced in the IC, but be aware that they do exist. You can invent some, if you'd like.

Style of RP

In this RP, I want to try something multimedia meaning if you can tell part of your story or contribute to the world of other characters through photography, art, music-writing, poetry, descriptions, or any possible creative way that you can imagine, I invite you to do so. This does not mean that if you are only comfortable writing you can’t be a part of this story: I encourage you to dig just as deeply into building parts of the world as well. You also don’t have to create every single multimedia piece you use, and can draw from your favourite artists of all kinds. However, the reason I’m trying this is because I think it deepens the connection and satisfaction when you have created something yourself that enriches other people’s roleplaying.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the setting, which I’ve tried to keep brief enough to allow you guys to develop landmarks while providing you the basics to write them in the first place, I want you to write characters that follow these few pointers:

Juxtaposition: imagine life in the 22nd millennium, in such a tight and cramped space as Metro-Tokyo. How would you innovate to meet your goals? In the face of such chaos, would you go hyper-advanced to gain a technological edge over the average person with all the risks that entails (in terms to thievery and exposure to high-tech threats), or would you fall back on old technology retro-fitted for the modern age?

Branding: Everything is branded. Everything. Even if you don’t want to fall into a subculture, you’re already there, and someone has done it before you. People make a living in Metro-Tokyo simply keeping up with the culture and fashion confusion, to absolutely no end at all.

Be a Part of the Story: Design a character that is out on the edge in some way – what skills do they have to contribute that are unique and with appropriate support could pose a threat to the existing system. Don’t imagine such power that your character could singlehandedly take down the hierarchy, but assume that they are several orders of magnitude more talented (though not necessarily trained and skilled) in their chosen niche than the people around them. The examples that I have already seen or thought of range from the expected such as an agile scout, hacker, or brute force thug, to the unexpected but useful, such as a filmmaker, actress, or weapons tinkerer.

Leave Room for Character Advancement: should be self-explanatory. You’ll all be special little snowflakes soon enough, believe me.

Please review the following character sheet, even if you've posted one, and feel free to go back over it and add in more detail if you wish given the new material I've posted above.

Name: Jacob Rayne (Prefers to be called by his last name)
Age:28
Gender/Sexuality:Male/Heterosexual
Main skill:Hacking.
Secondary skills:Coding,Programming, Parkour, Persuasion.
Quirk: He hates smiling, its definitely not his Forte, whenever he is hired for a job, he always has one condition "I don't have to smile, EVER."
Oddity: Rayne has what could be classified as 2 personas, when hes doing his job, and when hes talking. Hes either cool, calm, collected, and extremely cold to everyone, or energetic, agreeable, and nice. This oddity of his near-personality switch puts off a few people.
Flaw:He is stubborn, he never quits till hes done, even if he has the cops on his tail.
Secret weapon:You could consider his entire job, identity, and mind a secret weapon. Not many people know what he looks like, or sounds like, as he operates covertly.
Goal in life(meta): to live somewhere nice, out of the prying eyes of all those who want him dead.
Goal in life(immediate): To get through every day without getting caught.
Reason-they-will-ultimately-win:His job is high paying, he works in secrecy, he has pride in the fact that his job stops the vile corporations that make glue out of cats and other things (if you get this reference, you get a gold star) and he has the skills to reach his goal.
Reason-they-will-ultimately-fail: Rayne is way too willing to take risks, even in his extremely deadly line of work, as hacking is not easy these days. Anyone who works in big business would want him dead, especially if their company uses some sort of scandalous or illegal means to make their products.
Theme song: This happened, and we all let it happen.
Description: Rayne is of average height, with long black hair, and hazel eyes, though he usually wears sunglasses and hats, and sometimes colored contact lenses, but it depends on the disguise.
Equipment: Re-Arm™ Bionic Arm–Did you lose an arm? or are you tired of your boring human arm? well, with the newest bionic technology, we here at Re-Arm™ have designed an arm that puts your normal arm to shame, with 2 times the gripping speed and power, and customization options, such as (but not limited to) USB sticks, placed within the fingers, a small computer that can connect to the internet without a WIFI connection, and a grappling hook launcher.
EZ Change™ Quick outfit changing system–Do you need to change your outfit and don't have enough time? Simply take the EZ change device into a private room, turn on the device, select an outfit, step on the device, and in 2 minutes, you will have a new, stylish look.
REvert™ virus protection software –is your electronic device prone to viruses, hacking, and bugging? well with REvert™ your problems are gone. REvert™ will wipe any unregistered data every 5 minutes, and don't worry, NOTHING can hide from REvert™ .

Generic Equipment:multiple sets of clothing (safely stored in his EZ Change™), his phone (with the ever-present voice changer), and a taser.

Short Bio: Rayne was born to poverty, he even worked when he was little to help provide for his family. They were poorer than dirt. Even with this, he got an education, and got a job at a small factory. During a party in the break room, which was celebrating everyone getting a raise, Rayne got drunk, and was pushed partially into a furnace during a fight ( the group had stumbled out of the break room, and over to the factory floor) Rayne's arm was burnt off. If a small hospital (albeit a shabby one) had not been right next door, he would have died. for 1 month he has payed, while not being able to work, and was then fired. for 2 years, he searched for a job, with his one arm, until a offer came up. "I will pay anything, if someone can hack into [INFORMATION REDACTED] and find out information on their secret project." Rayne new a good bit about computers from when he was young, so he called the man up, getting the job, and teaching himself how to hack. He wanted an arm out of the deal first, one outfitted for hacking, and that's when the Re-Arm™ Bionic Arm came in. After this first job, Rayne took a liking to the job, getting serious about it, and slowly improving his earnings, having enough to support himself and his parents. Though, you can't do risky business like this forever.

Here's my revised CS.

Name: Andy Hughes

Age: 20

Gender/Sexuality: Male, Heterosexual

Main Skill: Filmmaking. At an early age, Andy has shown the traits and skill of an avid filmmaker, and has attended many film schools in New Sydney. He shoots films so skillfully, that if he sees an action-packed event, he can film it in a way that will make it look like it’s choreographed. Add his Paracam to the mix, and he’s a filmmaking machine.

Secondary Skills:
1. Parkour
2. Martial Arts

Quirk: Andy has a tendency to sing while engaging in a physical activity. Being in Metro-Tokyo, those physical activities tend to be fights or chases.

Oddity: He likes to crack his knuckles and neck quite a bit. It grosses some people out.

Flaw: Andy’s quite combative, partly due to the fact that he wants good action sequences for his movie.

Secret Weapon: Andy is very impulsive. He acts on instinct- which makes him very unpredictable. While this can be an advantage, it is also his greatest weakness, as he acts before he thinks, and this could lead to very big mistakes.

Goal in Life (meta): Andy wishes to make the bestest, coolest action/thriller movie ever, using footage he acquires during his stay at Metro-Tokyo.

Goal in Life (immediate): To not get arrested for his actions while filming at least long enough to aquire forty-minutes worth of footage.

Reason-They-Will-Ultimately-Win: Andy would succeed because he has the equipment and skill needed to pull off the film of his dreams. And, the way things are in Metro-Tokyo, there’s enough things that could go wrong to make for a compelling movie.

Reason-They-Will-Ultimately-Fail: Andy’s inexperience in Metro-Tokyo life could be a major setback, along with the fact that his camera is a drone- meaning if noticed, it could quite possibly be destroyed. And no camera = no footage.

Theme song(s):

Description:
Note that the armour on his garb is purely cosmetic- just to make his movie the tiniest bit more aesthetically pleasing.

Equipment:
Panasonic Paracam™ – The Panasonic Paracam™ is the camera for aspiring and proffessional filmmakers alike. Attached to a small drone, it’s programmed to find the best angle for a scene and film. It’s operator can select articles of interest- people, objects, etc. –and the camera will make sure to keep them in the shot. It has the capacity to record over a year’s worth of footage… And Andy has plenty more memory cards with him.

NuCorp Climbat Gloves™ – The NuCorp Climbat Gloves™ are gloves made with combat and climbing in mind. Got yourself in a fight? The knuckledusters on the gloves are sure to help. Climbing up a wall, but have nothing to hold on to? At the press of a button, the gloves will light up in a fluro-blue colour and help you stick to any surface- as long as it doesn’t contain more than 50% concrete. The hardworking people at NuCorp still haven’t figure out why.

Generic Equipment: Andy carries spare Panasonic™ memory cards for his camera in an unextraordinary GeneralGear™ backpack.

Short Bio: Born in Australia, Andy lived most of his life in the ‘natural’ New Sydney. As Andy grew, he realised that the ‘natural’ city he lived in wasn’t so natural after all. Not only was the terrain terraformed, but many ‘natural’ things were actually man made- from trees, to grass, to soil. At an early age, Andy developed an interest in action, martial arts and thriller movies, and set his goal there and then to make one that will be remembered for centuries to come. Learning martial arts and parkour, while also taking filmmaking classes, Andy finally set out to begin filming his movie in the best possible setting for an action/martial arts/thriller movie- Metro-Tokyo.

Name: Trein Fallfer

Age: 24

Gender/Sexuality: Female/Heterosexual

Main Skill: Trein has a flair for art, especially painting and graffiti.

Secondary Skills: Climbing, Pranking

Quirk: Trein is very optimistic. She'll always try to find a silver lining, no matter how bad a situation is.

Oddity: She has a tendency to talk to herself a lot.

Flaw: Trein will not back down from a challenge, no matter how stupid or pathetic it is. This has led to her breaking both her arms, almost becoming paralyzed, and nearly dying before in the past. Who knows what it will bring her in the future.

Secret Weapon: She's got quite the eye for details. This becomes useful when she's painting--or when she's looking for something.

Goal in Life (meta): Become a well known artist throughout the entire world.

Goal in Life (immediate): Find a job to pay for art supplies and a steady home.

Reason-They-Will-Ultimately-Win: She's stubborn, hard working, willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants, no matter the cost. Trein is very nifty with a spray can, using it as both a weapon and/or an artful tool.

Reason-They-Will-Ultimately-Fail: Trein is very prideful. She doesn't accept help easily, preferring to do tasks herself. This mixed with her competitiveness makes her prone to doing stupid things.
She also struggles with maintaining her art supplies and her house due to financial problems. Because of this, she's always running out of supplies, using money for food on art, and constantly moving about.

Theme song(s):

Description:

Equipment:
Spectrum Glow™ Hue-changing Spray Paint

This fancy can of paint can be any colour you want! Thanks to a digital touch screen on the side, you can choose from a wide assortment of colours, from red to purple to even green! These things can even come in handy as a weapon. Someone trying to mug you? Hit them on the head or spray paint their faces. That'll buy you enough time to run away.

EZ Go™ Utility Belt

You can never be Batman, but you can pretend to be with this fancy pantsy utility belt! With surprisingly spacious pockets and multiple loops to hold cylindrical objects, this bad boy can carry quite a bit of weight around while feeling like you're carrying a feather. Items are quick and easy to get out and put back when you're on the run.

Generic Equipment: Trein carries a few cans of paint which she stores in her utility belt. There's a couple sheets of paper and a pencil in the pockets.

Short Bio: For someone born in the upper levels, she's pretty dang poor. For the first three years of her life, Trein was raised into a life of luxury and riches. After a financial disaster, however, her family's wealth was quickly depleted. They went down to the lower levels and have lived there, struggling to get back to power.
Trein moved away from her family at age sixteen to focus more on her artistic ambitions. Since then, she's been pretty much raising herself.

I wouldn't expect to out-produce the top-labs in the world on a consistent basis, but there can certainly be inventors. I would see that kind of character as the ultimate tinkerer, who can pull together a laser gun from a bunch of spare parts, and somehow make it better than the normal one. (Albeit more likely to blow up in his face.)

Name: Skeet Lawless

Age: 20

Gender/Sexuality: Female, Heterosexual

Main Skill: Free-running

Secondary Skills: Gymnastics, acrobatics, flexibility

Quirk: She’ll blow a kiss at an enemy, but if an ally makes a serious move their balls are going to be living up in their throat.

Oddity: She will re-set her own dislocated bones, with a disgusting cracking sound.

Flaw: Under her flirtacious persona, she’s cold as ice. She does not play well with others.

Secret Weapon: Looks can kill, and in Skeet’s case they usually do. Her enemies assume she’s harmless; she laughs as she snaps their necks and backflips to safety. She doesn’t look strong or vicious enough to survive in Metropolis, but she thrives.

Goal in Life (meta): Skeet wants to make a life for herself—somewhere where she doesn’t have to kill somebody to make a buck, where she can survive without walking on the broken backs of others.

Goal in Life (immediate): Don’t get caught, don’t get killed.

Reason-They-Will-Ultimately-Win: Skeet isn’t without morals, and she’s tough. Her determination and willpower are legendary. Using every ounce of self-preservation and humanity in her, she’ll fight her way to something worth having, and she’ll do it without hurting the innocent. (Everyone else is fair game.) She won’t let anyone or anything get in the way of her ideal life.

Reason-They-Will-Ultimately-Fail: She has no allies. Skeet has never relied on anyone else, and she doesn’t really understand that she can’t do this alone. At some point, she’s going to need help, and when that time comes, she will be too proud to ask for it.

Theme song(s):

Description:
Long brown hair tied with a red handkerchief, amber eyes, a smile as sharp as a razor. A smile that says, “You wish, idiot.”

Equipment:
Urban Flayr™ Silk Scarf in Red Dead Dame—The first in Metropolitan fashion, Urban Flayr™ brings you the beauty and luxury of space-farmed silk. The scarf itself is 60 inches long and four inches wide, and, for a limited time, can be purchased in a set with a matching handkerchief.

Kommando Se7en™ Wrist Blades— Feeling vulnerable at that society gala? Did the gorillas at the door run a metal detector over you and confiscate your means of self-defense? The sleekest in concealed weaponry, these paired blades are made of hand-fired ceramic, undetectable by traditional means. Furthermore, they are designed to fit nearly under almost any sleeve with no discernible outline, and can be activated with the twitch of a finger. Each blade is a savage six inches in length and are available in both serrated and straight varieties.

Neo™ Pocket Dimension— Neo™ is currently the only company specializing in personalized pocket dimensions, ideal for the lady or gentleman on the go. Simply strap your customized activator to a belt buckle, purse strap, or pants pocket, tap the little red button, and aim the reticule at whatever you wish to take with you. After a three second wait, the device will beep, and the object will be sucked into your own personal dimension! The Neo™ Pocket Dimension comes in a variety of sizes—from Planet, to Galaxy, to Star System, each with more and more storage space.

Generic Equipment: Short-wave radio and a pager to reach her with jobs.

Short Bio: Skeet remembers little of her childhood; most of her memories are of running sensitive packages through Metropolis for cash. Her incredibly speed and agility (along with her discreet service) soon made her popular. Rarely without work, Skeet was soon able to buy herself food, instead of using the five-finger discount to feed herself. As she grew older, she became harder to overlook—she was quite attractive—and learned to use her sex appeal to pull off her jobs. She also grew more ruthless. By the time she was eighteen she was no longer squeamish about death, and had been forced, more than once, to slit a throat to ensure silence. She will avoid it if she can, but if Skeet is in a situation where it is either her or a hired thug, she’ll choose herself, every time.

Name
Grant Anders - [The] Suit (colloquial),

Age
35

Gender/Sexuality
Male / Heterosexual

Main Skill
Business/Negotiations

Secondary Skills
Marksmanship
Computer Programming (Javan -> Java successor)

Quirk
Learns very quickly, and adapts rapidly. He makes deadpan jokes, and then acts almost disappointed when nobody responds or understands.
Strangely idealistic for a crime boss, and friendly, too.

Oddity
Emotion. Fury in particular. Cold fury, never hot. The offhand sarcastic comment from Grant can be seething with anger. If someone were to make him vengeful, they would be unable to tell, and his lack of emotion is unsettling. If he realizes he is being emotionless, he fixes it (subconsciously), but in general he just...doesn't realize that he's not reacting properly to situations.

Flaw
White-collar warlord. Grant has no real skill in close combat fighting, and although he is in shape, he's easily outstripped by anyone who moves around the city on a regular basis.

Secret Weapon
Runs a criminal empire from the 120th floor during the quiet hours of the night. Complete with his own personal military force, massive amounts of income, and a private "disposal" ground for those who anger or fail him. There's also a personalized satellite strike-drone in orbit over the city: ties in with the disposal zone.

Goal in Life (meta)
To fix the corrupt system of leadership as he sees it. Grant believes the Metropolis is run by individuals who don't care about the common man and are driving the place into the ground, metaphorically speaking.

Goal in Life (immediate)
Prevent his Mafia's gang leaders from usurping his authority/Become closer to the actual authority of the Metropolis.

Reason-They-Will-Ultimately-Win
Grant has a large empire and a massive set of resources under his command, both legally and illegally. If he plays his cards right, he could get all he ever wanted.

Reason-They-Will-Ultimately-Fail
If he plays his cards wrong, he'll be caught, sentenced to death, and then likely tortured for information before being killed. His entire underground operation isn't legal in the slightest.

Theme songs

Description (art or words fine, but I prefer lots of both)

Alternate 1
Alternate 2
Almost always wears a clean, pressed suit, hence his nickname. However, these suits are generally worn often, and therefore broken in. They don't hinder movement, and the shoulders aren't padded. His face is either clean shaven or five-o-clock shadowed. His body isn't superbly buff or muscular, and generally there isn't any real definition unless he flexes his muscles.

Equipment
the Forward-Thinking Leader Collective (FTL™)
-FTL is Grant's business. Funding all sorts of advanced scientific and engineering technologies, this company is known for producing the stuffs that other companies take and adapt for their products. Alternate fuel sources, grand-scale teleporting, mileHacking...you've heard of their tech. This alone brings Grant a cool sum of money, but FTL also funds experimental drugs and business deals that would be...frowned upon. By night, FTL is a major player in the Metropolis mid-levels Mafia scene.

Personal Deflection Assistant (PDA™)
-A funny little device, the PDA clips on to the belt, and, when active, emits a bulletproof, vapor-proof, just-about-everything-proof energy shield. Skin tight, completely invisible. Even your worst, most psychotic lover was never this ever-present. Manufactured by FTL™.

The Monitor (TM™)
-Excellent for all your business needs. A microthin contact lens which continuously delivers all the information you'll ever need to have the edge on your competition. Stock fluctuations, heart rates, sweat production. TM™ makes you a master liar and lie-detector with no extra training needed. Technology manufactured by FTL™.

Generic Equipment
Basic, disposable, gas-powered handgun. For self defense
Wallet, latest FTL-designed Cell, FTL-brand headphones, etc.

Short Bio
Grant never really knew when he decided to: A) become a crime lord, or B) save Metropolis from itself. He grew up in a loving middle class family, went to school, got his education. then he graduated, and just...decided that the city had too many troubles. Long stints on the internet, and personal experience contributed to that. After that, it was fairly simple to pull his considerable intellect and multiple connections together to build up FTL. Now he sits on his technothrone, looking out to the future. Of course, he goes out and about, as well, but keeps his real identity hidden. These clandestine trips have led to him being named "the Suit", as that's all he's ever seen in, and few get close enough to him during brief meetings to learn more than that.

Cool! All approved. Mercenary, I like what you've done here in making a character that relies on his resources rather than personal strengths; just be aware that in general each of the other characters is roughly as strong as you in the right situations. Regardless, nice to have some logistical support in the story from a non-GM angle.

First post up tomorrow morning.

The MetPo do what the MetPo will. Imagine a cyberpunk police force with the approximate corruption levels of Rio de Janeiro's average police department, if you're familiar with Brazilian politics. Essentially, they like order but won't put themselves in massive danger to restore it and regularly will try to shunt problems off to other departments nearby.

Good posts guys.

Merc Lord: the first and the fifth image are closest to my image of Metro Tokyo, just with more smog and platforms between buildings. Also, lots of impromptu holes in the walls of skyscrapers with platforms connecting them. You'd never be able to see the sky from the 50th floor, or see the ground either.
