In Their Words: Darkmatter
Guild user and RP GM Darkmatter sits down with Drakel of the RPGN to discuss Godmoding and Mary Sues

The Conversation: Has the Casual bar been lowered?
Kush started a discussion on the community's standards and how they are defined. Please, add your opinion to the mix!

Ask Away
What do you look for in an interest check (specific to the section, perhaps?) and what is your biggest turnoff in an interest check? Please feel free to post your answers in this thread!

Up and Coming
Interest checks are often the first stage in recruiting players for an RP, and a really good one can net you a lot of applicants. These are some of the interest checks that caught our attention recently. Best of all, they're looking for players!

Current and Cool
Roleplays on this list have already started (but may still be recruiting, please consult the GM) and also caught our attention; the hard work the GM and players put in to setting up the RP, writing their sheets and hashing out the details have paid off and now they're writing their in-character (IC) posts.

On Display
- Art: Guru's Concepts and Illustrations - Guru has shown work before as an active member of the Irregulars, but here's your chance to see his gallery start from the ground up! If you want to see an artist growing their skills and how a piece looks step-by-step, be sure to check it out! We can't wait to see more.
- Writing: Poems from Spriggs - Spriggs27 brings an old literary love to the Guild, poetry. Not only is this a gallery of various poems, but the author is even accepting requests!

About RPGN
RPGN is produced by a volunteer staff of desperate adbot designers with the goal of bringing Guild members current and useful information about goings-on in our community. We are always accepting suggestions on categories and content. We're particularly interested in displaying people's artwork as a banner (and will fully credit it and link your gallery -- woo). For more information, feel free to PM RPGN.

I'd have to say that Comic Represents Renalta well. XD Brovo is, as ever, a deranged GM.

And lolz... My Gallery. XD

Err... Just goes to show how little you actually know Renalta.

Also like the double handed slap, that's amusing. Implicating the characters are too dumb to recognize trees and that the GM has serious life problems.

Recommendation: While I don't mind because I have a thick skin, you probably shouldn't release a comic like this in the future if your idea of humour is to mock and deride the intelligence of the characters and laugh at the fact that the GM may or may not have life problems. Just saying, most probably wouldn't take it all that well.

My comment wasn't meant to be taken seriously, sir.

Precisely why Guild News in the past has mostly avoided comics about anyone or anything in particular on Guild... the inability of some to take a joke.

I honestly hadn't thought this would be offending until shortly before submission when I also shot you a PM, even then, didn't think that likely. I understand there were some complications with it showing up, to which I apologize. I also apologize if this seemed targeting. I'll explain the thinking I described when pitching the idea a while ago and I understand, as with anything, some may not have come through as clearly. The idea is to highlight the crazy scenarios characters face in games/roleplays and the reactions we'd probably take if it were reality and we knew what was coming. The irony is of course that we often can see what GMs have done in the past and how amazing the obstacles they've come up with have been -- remarkable for their narrative and challenge, usually. Originally I'd meant to have the dwarf throw a reference to Elder Scrolls Vengeance of the Deep too, but the line wasn't forming very well. Renalta was chosen because it's a very known roleplay where people expect quality, unexpected challenges, and as you go, some amazing accomplishments. The first line about GMs in general is meant to be like an 'Oh My God' sort of statement, again, as if the characters were conscious this was a RP.

The dwarf + trees joke was in reference to Elder Scrolls lore where Dwemer had established underground and to Dragon Age.

This was absolutely and undeniably not a stab at any individual, more trying to recognize a roleplay that I, personally, see as a guild treasure. Just imagine if you knew that treasure came with so many traps and battles along the way! I hope that clears things up. Regardless of all this, we will absolutely keep in consideration how a thing may be read despite our intentions when it comes to these comics. Thick skinned or otherwise, we all have feelings, and it was not the intention to hurt anyone's.

@Guru: Whether or not it was meant to be taken seriously is irrelevant. I was giving a friendly warning about the content. Personally I think it is mildly amusing, especially since I do have life problems, and I'm not particularly sane. In short: I know how to laugh at myself in the mirror every morning Guru. There are, however, a lot of people who don't, and the majority of people who mentioned this comic to me, did so under the pretense that it was being offensive.

It did make Tempest laugh though, and it did crack a small smile from me, so kudos for that.

@Shon: Well, you had three comic panes. Understand I don't have your knowledge about what references, intentions, and so on that you have in mind making the comic. So all I got to know was this: It is a comic about Renalta. The characters cannot figure out what trees are. They then comment that the GM must have life problems. End comic.

Amusing to me, not to a lot of other folks. That's why I stated the warning.

Intent or not, execution didn't come through this time. Next time, focus on one thing to reference, practice makes perfect. Just like role playing.

So I had to look up the term Mary Sue. Never actually heard it used before, but have seen the characters plenty of times. I haven't seen many true Mary Sue's, young girls doing extraordinary feats that are in actuality impossible for them, but have seen plenty of characters with those flawless personalities. The player expects that every challenge their character faces can be overcome and that's just not the case. I see it currently in my tabletop games I run. My players refuse to run from a fight or give up on an investigation, even if I stonewall them at every turn because that is what I wanted them to do.

Sometimes, it is in character. The character truly believes they are capable of anything and will never back down. That perseverance can even be the driving force that does force them to succeed, with a lot of out of game luck. However, no character should be perfect. There is no suspense to it. In one of my 1x1 games, my main character is currently dying from a poison because I found it far more fitting for him not wake up as the evil witch assassin hovered over his bed. He is also extremely prejudice towards other races, so the dealings with the goblin kings haven't been going too smoothly.

I've recently got involved in local tabletop games and they have greatly increased my understanding of character development. As Darkmatter says, we were all Mary Sues once. You jump into a game where the CS is designed for you to make it as strong as you want and the temptation is just there. Why not be a total badass since the only restriction is your imagination? You can take down that iron golem in the first post because you can write out a clever attack and control how the golem reacts. In a tabletop, that's not the case. You start out in a weaker state (most games) and the dice (luck) are the ultimate factor of how strong you are. Most games also strongly encourage taking character flaws and disadvantages. Obviously the weaken your character in some way, but the game gives a reward for being so bold and a flawed character is far more interesting than a perfect one.

It is one of the reasons why Female Shepard of the Mass Effect Series is one of my favorite video game heroines. She is skilled in combat, but due to the story line and the luck of the draw, she can't overcome every obstacle. For every victory she achieves, there is often a loss to go with it in some form. Not many characters in general can give us that experience, let alone females.

....and now after that thought process, I really want to dig up one of my RPs where this was the whole point of our characters. They couldn't overcome most obstacles. The real challenge was how they dealt with the personal and environmental fallout of those obstacles.
