Yeah, they're semi-randomly generated. If you go to the site where it's done (
http://unicornify.appspot.com/use-it), you can put in a string of numbers and/or letters and it'll spit out a random unicorn image. Enter the same thing, you get the same exact picture each time, so it's not truly random.
From what Mahz said, they're done with our join dates and user ID number, so everyone gets a different one.
