In a land torn apart by a ruler who craves power and ultimate control it has been decreed that all children born with the bond of a guardian animal must be surrendered to King Alaman's evil army. No one knows how King Alaman knows when such a child is born but just hours after their birth his soldiers appear at their doorsteps, demanding the parents hand the child over.
When a chosen child is born their guardian animal presents themselves to the family and approaches the child. The guardian will then touch them once and disappear until the child's sixteenth birthday unless the child's life becomes in danger. Only one in every 50 children will be born with a guardian animal, but if one child is born with one then any others born to the family will as well. A guardian animal can be an creature found on land and usually tend to be a bit larger than their typical species, many in fact being large enough for their human to ride.
Many parents give their child to the King's army out of fear, some because they truly believe in the King and what he represents. These children are raised in homes until their twelfth birthday when they are then sent to be trained by the soldiers to become part of the army on their sixteenth birthday. Boys and girls alike are raised this way. The king doesn't care about gender, he cares only about raising an army of human and guardians to take over all the surrounding countries.
Those parents who refuse to hand their children over must find a way to send them away before the soldiers arrive and take the child from them. More often than not the parents have no choice but to stay behind and come up with a story as to why there is no child to be taken away while those closest to them run as far as possible with the child. They are raised in secret all over the country, some even in other countries, unaware that those that raise them are not their parents. Many of these children have now reached the age where their guardians have appeared and those that raised them have no choice but to tell them the truth. Most have left the only homes they know and now search for others like themselves, determined to find a way to take down King Alaman and his army.
I was thinking of having people that were raised in the army and people who were raised in secret. Any animals except mythical creatures can be used for a guardian.
I'm open to any notes or ideas that anyone may have. (I will usually be posting from my tablet so my posts may not be more than a couple paragraphs unless I gain access to a computer.)
