Twig sat in the window of the small tree house in the Smith family's backyard snacking on a sunflower seed from a patch nearby. He seemed to be waiting for something as he looked around the yard and then up at the sun briefly to try and gauge the time. It was still morning, nearly noon and he had been waiting maybe an hour. He heard the scratch of claws on wood behind him and turned to see his squirrel, Oak, standing in the tree house.
"There you are, I've been waiting for you," Twig said and slid down a string he had hung from the window, landing on the floor with grace that came from a lifetime of climbing. Oak chattered and scampered over to him, waiting for Twig to climb onto his back, which he did.
Oak, with Twig on his back, scampered down the vertical face of the tree and into the yard, running toward the house. As they drew near the back door of the house, left slightly open so the puppy could go in and out by himself, when the cat leaped from the bushes and landed on Oak, sending Twig sprawling on the ground. The last he saw of Oak was the squirrel, limp, being carried off by the cat before Twig ran for the door. "Damn the cat." Twig said as he entered the house and headed straight into the living room, climbing up a drape and sitting on top of the window. "I'll get that thing someday."
