It takes a long time to get a job, especially in this crap economy. Don't lose hope!

I’ve been looking for a job for around a year ever since I’ve graduated high school. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Myth 1: College degrees get you hired
Myth 2: Economy is still bad

If any of you live in NY/SF/Atlanta/Providence/Boston, I can potentially get you a job, just PM me.

It's bad enough that people with several years experience are fighting for entry level jobs against dozens of other applicants. Some parts of the country are doing horrible in the job market, and you can't tell me with a straight face that the economy is great when my mom was unable to find a job for almost a year after her and dad moved.

It's better than it was six years ago, but I have never seen it more difficult to get hired than it has been since the recession hit, and there's a reason that thousands of Canadians are flocking to Alberta to get work, and let me tell you, very few people enjoy the idea of leaving everyone they know thousands of kilometers behind just so they can feed themselves.

Go STEM subjects. Last time me and my friends were drunk we got in a huge argument regarding STEM vs. Humanities and our side ended up chanting "MATHS! MATHS! MATHS!" down the street. It was nerdtacular and embarrassing and I don't even regret it a tiny bit.

The one problem with STEM is how conceited we all are about how good STEM is.

Now that I've been getting into Engineering Education with my research I've noticed that we do pull a lot from the humanities (At least for their theories). I'm not talking about in the industry, but we definitely need the humanities on the Academic side of things.

I took an environmental technology major, which was in the engineering department in my school. Going into water and wastewater treatment basically ensures I'm in high demand pretty much everywhere.

I agree, and love studying subjects in all corners of academia - the whole sciences vs. humanities thing has just become an inside joke among my friend group. I think that it's important overall for people in either corner to take an active interest in the other. There's always knowledge and skills that can be appropriated and applied to one's own field and interests. Hell, there are huge problems with articulation and effective communication in the scientific community sometimes, and many could do with learning something from English majors.

Out of all the people I know who have degrees, there are only two of them who are working in the fields they went to college for. The rest of them (20+ people) are working in some form of a retail job.

Really? That's awesome, didn't know that. In my lab science class this semester we talked quite a bit about water treatment and wastewater management, etc. Here in calif we use like 84% or something just for agriculture. It's nuts.

But yeah, gr8 major. I didn't realize you'd gotten that.
