What happens when a realm like Middle Earth develops gunpowder? And then, one day, aviation? Soon, the orcs and the elves are battling over space colonies! What is the result of a cladding a troll in strength-enhancement armor and giving him a minigun? How does elven culture develop into the space age? What about the Dwarves? and, most importantly, where does magic fit into all this?

The idea is really rough still, and I would love some input from others, but the basic idea is this:

Lord of the RIngs in space.

I realize that there are a couple problems with this. First of all, the books imply that the history of Middle Earth is our history. We will simply choose to ignore this. The second thing is that the elves were all leaving Middle Earth. For our purposes, we shall say this:

In the Lord of the Rings, what allowed the elf havens of Rivendell and Galadriel's realm to exist were the upholding effects of the magic rings given them by Sauron. With his defeat, the rings lost their power. For the purposes of this story, we will adjust that little-known fact, and say that they DO continue to work. This also opens up allowing Ringwraiths back into the story.

I think he means this isn't a new or ideal concept. I somewhat agree. I also dislike fantasy settings that depict races unfairly. Lok'tar ogar, friend.

The first step to something like this is just to list out available technologies.

Also W40k is a sci fi series where humanity is a galaxy wide empire fighting off alien invasions and internal rebellions on thousands of worlds at the same time. There's also demons that continuously come in to the universe from the 'Warp'. It's very grim and dark where billions die every day and billions more are born at the same time. One human is one amongst trillions and lives in a empire that cares little for the individual and sacrifices life freely. It's in a constant state of never ending war for centuries and millenium. Entire worlds are burned to stop the spread of chaos and heresy. That's what Khan was talking about.

This roleplay idea seems significantly more tame and far less grimdark. Which isn't a bad thing.

Okay, here is some available tech:

Advanced solid-projectile weaponry: It will be similar to what we have now, but developed to be a bit more powerful, think the human weapons in the HALO series.

Early-age interplanetary craft: The story will take place entirely within one star system, and travel between planets will not be fast. However, the craft will be suited for war, in a manner similar to the way ships fought in the Napoleonic era.

Exoskeleton suits: Armor that increases strength, endurance, agility, and speed.

Ancient weapons: Old swords and similar weapons from the old days, made by ancient elven craftsmen, and still, even in this time, are unparalleled in strength

Now, with that being said, would you rather this be done as a nation roleplay, or individuals within the story?

Could be either one really. Or a mix of both where people control their empires and some characters. But I think I'd like this more if it was from the perspective of individuals. The Lord of the Rings and indeed The Hobbit were about some tightly knit groups on high stakes quests. If you want it to have the feel of LOTR, an individual based RP would fit that vibe best.

Then again there's the mix, like I said. People would control empires in the background, but the main group would take center stage.

That's a good idea.

Having some form of boarding craft, and probably starfighters to accompany them, sounds like a good idea. Otherwise they'll be little in the way of personal combat.

Though, I don't really see a point to swords when a burst from a hand pistol would be faster and more deadly. Maybe a long knife or short sword at most but not a sword. At least, not unless you include some sort of "magical shielding". Maybe they can take a burst or two before going down for a brief recharge cycle. This would allow those with melee weapons get close but not just waltz all willy nilly across the battlefield. It might even make bows useful, as rune carved arrows piercing through the magical shields in a way that mere bullets couldn't.

Sorry to muddy the water abit.... buuuuuuuuuuut. What about Elder Scrolls (ESO IS NOT CANON AND NEVER WILL BE IN MY HEAD) in Space? I'd love to play as a Khajiit or Argonian.
