It's moments like this that remind me that I literally spend the first 10-15 minutes of starting up my desktop closing programme that start up on their whimsy.

I have no problems with Skype, but when people ask me why I hate using it I can politely post the link to this thread and show them why Skype is the eater of souls and destroyer of worlds.

Also, you're using Windows 8?

Are they on administrator accounts? Limited users might not be able to fully kill off windows products.

Yep.

Mhmm. I got a 'prebuilt' (though partially customisable) Sony laptop rather than fully customising my own, as having a Sony store round the corner for when things go wrong is very convenient. The downside is that there was no Windows 7 option for the OS - and sure, I could put 7 on there myself, but 8 isn't nearly enough of a hassle to be worth that. It gets way more hatred than is deserved.

Never have any problems with Skype myself and I use it daily. I blame Windows 8 anyway, despite what you just said, because fuck Windows 8. Any PC OS that uses "apps" deserves to burn in hell. Programs, son. Software. We have names for these things already, we don't need to turn a computer into a smartphone.

It's not as if they made using the admittedly-ridiculous app bullshit compulsory, though. You can use it as if it's Windows 7 and barely notice the difference.

...You sure there aren't settings you can play with to keep those things from starting up on their own?

Windows 8 was literally made to be for the tablet and other touch screen devices. Using it's interface is supposedly impossible and moving the mouse to the far side of the screen will bring up that stupid clock-- but it is not a bad OS and does it's job. The problem with it is that it was made by Microsoft which everyone thinks is the Antichrist's personal software company. The only problem I have with it has to do with my shaky as Hell hands which will cause that damn clock.

Yes, but in all honesty there's no issue with it being ported to non-touch-screen. It's optimised for them, sure, but it works perfectly well otherwise. I don't know who's saying using the interface is impossible, because I've never had any problems, and you can very easily disable the "mouse movements bring up menus etc." options. There is almost literally no difference in operation between Windows 7 and 8 (unless you want there to be and use apps).

Too bad you don't have a Mac, where you can just drag and drop it in the trash and it's all over

Skype is a malware. One of the few that doesn't get people raising a mob to burn it down.
