Soul Cairn

4E 217

Mist rises, and now my time has come,
Defend my brothers from fires above,
The sky will shake,
And then it breaks
and down the night ascends.

It's been fifteen years since Ulfric Stormcloak's failed rebellion. High Queen Elisif has been elected to rule by the Jarls of skyrim. The terror spread from the Dragon Crisis ended with the Dragonborn sacrificing their life to kill Alduin, recreating a new order of Blades in their memory. After assassinating the Empire, the Night Mother has left Skyrim to spread the will of Sithis to other nations. The Volkihar vampire clan was destroyed by the Dawnguard, leaving Skyrim in a peaceful and tranquil state for over a decade. The Empire continue to grow strong, negotiating a fragile alliance with the Redguards of Hammerfell.

It was not to last.

Far to the south in Cyrodil on the shores of Leyawiin, the Aldmeri Dominion struck once more and claimed the city for themselves. The legion retreated to Bravil, sending word to the capital at once for much needed reinforcements. They were not to come.

Over the Imperial City, a fierce storm brewed so powerfully the citizens felt their bed shakes in the dead of night. The sky cried, and roared and screamed in terror until it snapped and broke. Darkness fell from the sky, beasts and spirits all covered in mist charged down, corrupting the White Tower and turning it black. The legion quickly formed ranks, leading a sortie through the burning city in the attempt to save their people. As their brothers and sisters died around them, the legion soon realised that these creatures were none the empire had ever fought before. The creatures absorbed the souls of the fallen, bringing new life to their ranks and more creatures for the legion to fight. By dawn the city and most of the legion was lost, leaving a large gap between two Legions which were fighting different wars. The empire is crippled, and the forces of the Dominion advance on Bravil.

Scholars believe it to be the Soul Cairn, broken into the mortal world to spread its corruption to feast on the living. How this came to be baffles the minds of many, but this mystery is not to be solved by sitting still, no, this is a mystery for adventurers, brave and bold.

Name: Akari
Age:26
Gender: Female

Race: Khajiit
Appearance:
Job: Thief

Skills: Blessed by the sign of the Shadow. She's got a very high Sneak skill, and is rather good at lock picking and Archery. She has a love of Alchemy, and an interest in enchanting...but she's not developed that skill very well. She has a grasp on Illusion Magic, but tries not to use it too often. She has a moderate Speech Craft.

Personality: Akari enjoys her life as a thief. She loves the freedom and wants to keep that freedom no matter what. She has a distaste for the Aldmeri Dominion, but a bit of a curiosity for the Soul Cairn. She can be a bit of a smart ass when confronted. But in general loves to make those she works with happy, preferring not to burn her bridges. She has a very big problem with Curiosity...as it does get this kitty in quite a bit of trouble. She finds both males and females attractive and doesn't hide that fact at all.

History: Akari was born to one of the many traveling Caravan's in Skyrim. Her fur tempered by the snowy cold embrace of hearty country. Her mother, a thief herself, began training Akari at a young age...making it seem more like a game than actual training...But their caravan was raided by bandits one night, killing or taking for slaves most of the people she held dear...Akari's mother gave her as much gold as she could and told her to run. After a long journey of hiding and hunting with her claws, she found herself in Riften...where she soon found a home in their Thieves guild. After a few years when news that the Aldmeri Dominion was beginning to rise up on the shores of Cyrodiil she was instructed to go and contact the thieves guild in Cyrodiil to see if there was anything she could steal in the chaos...unfortunately even before she arrived at the Imperial City she could see it... the large rip in the sky... causing such primal fear inside the cat, but also...a severe curiosity as to -what- was going on...But her sensible side won out..and instead she made her way to the city of Bruma hoping there would be someone there that could explain what was going on...or at least some heavy pockets that needed lightening.
Starting Point: Bruma

name: Dar-zel

Age: Apparent: 17 Actual: 124

Gender: Female

Race: Argonian

Appearance: Dar-zel is a tall thin Argonian whose jaw hides viper-like fangs and whose eyes flash with a predatory glint. She wears light ragged robes of gray and black which blend with the shadow and are often damp and dripping from her time in the murky waters surrounding Bravil. On the streets of that shanty town she is easily mistaken as a common reptilian beggar.

Job: Necromancer/vampire. Dar-zel occupies one of the flooded ruins near Bravil, known locally as Veyond Cave, which opens along the riverside. She makes her lair in a refuge only accessible by way of a long underwater swim through an inundated labyrinth of tunnels. For food, supplies and fresh corpses she ambushes travelers both on and beside the river making sure to only take those she suspects will not be missed. She will also, when necessity arises, swim into Bravil through its canals in order to prey upon beggars and thieves. When she needs to interact with mortals she assumes the guise of a poor, ignorant river trader and pilots a small dilapidated raft lashed together from driftwood.

Personality: Dar-zel views mortals as little more than livestock, cows for the slaughter, however, she rarely underestimates them for she knows that even a dumb animal can be dangerous. As a result she prefers not to face opponents she deems dangerous and shies from contact with skilled warriors and accomplished mages. Bereft of any personal vanity, she easily swaddles herself in the guise of a miserable beggar and plays this act whenever around mortals in the daylight. When she must attack a worthy foe she does so from secret, hiding while sending in her undead minions to finish them off, occasionally creeping in during the chaos to deliver the deathblow herself with her dagger.

Skills: Conjuration and Restoration (Master), Stealth (Expert), Enchantment (Adept), Onehanded (Apprentice), Alchemy (Apprentice), Speechcraft (Novice), Pickpocket (Novice)

History: Dar-zel grew up as a homeless hatchling in Bravil seeing through her eyes the worst of both men and mer. She grew disgusted with all people and chose instead to spend her life in the canals, interacting with them only long enough to pick their pockets and preferring the company of watersnakes and river gar. It was from the murky water that she first saw him, a stranger in Bravil who stole not only wealth but life from his marks. She was intrigued by this creature and followed him from the safety of the water back to his lair in a nearby Aleid ruin. There she was finally caught by the monster, but instead of killing her outright he recognized the advantage having an Argonian underling who knew the canals and corridors of the city could bring him. He offered her the 'gift' of vampirism that night more than a century ago and not fully understanding what that meant, Dar-zel accepted.

In the coming years, the young vampire broadened her knowledge learning the arts of conjuration and restoration from her master and combining them to become an accomplished necromage. Gifted by her birthsign of the Ritual she found she possessed a natural talent for raising and controlling undead. Combined with the stealthy skills of her youth she was well equipped to survive the rigors of life as an eternally hunted abomination. Hunters claimed her Dunmer sire not long after her training, but not before he was able to convey to her secrets about the world of the dead and the merchants of souls. He called these merchants, with whom all necromancers and enchanters bartered, knowingly or not, the Ideal Masters. In the coming years, Dar-zel spent more and more time researching these Ideal Masters and the Soul Cairn they inhabited. She ambushed caravans heading for Bravil's Mage's Guild or the Imperial libraries, stockpiling more and more lore on the subject. Although she lacked the alchemical skills to open any kind of doorway into soul cairn she did eventually discover the secrets of summoning the dead directly from that dread place. With these new gifts came instructions and omens of a dark future. Bound to the masters by oath and spell, Dar-zel awaited their instructions with sanguine anticipation.

Finally the order came, she was to travel by water way secretly into the Imperial city. There she randevued with other cultists, vampires and mortal necromancers both and they prepared for the coming of the Ideal Masters, raising an army of dead below the city to rise up at their return. When the white tower turned black, they came to the aid of darkness, boiling up out of the city like a pestilence and turning the tide against the Imperials. With the battle won and the city in the hands of the Masters, Dar-zel returned to Bravil under orders to prepare that city for conquest, recruiting others to their cause and bolstering ranks of her own undead servitors. Specifically she was to seek out an alchemist with the skill to open a permanent gate to the Soul Cairn and recruit him or her to their cause, willingly or unwillingly.

Equipment: Dar-zel has spent a long time furnishing her lair at Veyond Cave and has stockpiled a large amount of literature on arcane subjects, specifically necromancy. She has created altars attuned to the Soul Cairn which, although they lack the ability to create a stable portal, allow her to summon the denizens of the Cairn, the bonemen and wraithmen, at ease. At her lair she has access to an enchanting altar, an alchemical work station, and a stockpile of soulgems and staves she's cached over the years. Through her altar and by means of her oath to the Ideal Masters she is able to corrupt grand and greater soul gems, making them black, but can produce only so many in a given period.

When travelling outside her lair, the vampire wears the ragged robes of a beggar, with a hood to conceal the gleam of her eyes. Since she lacks any skill at destruction magic, she relies instead on an ebony dagger, a possession of her late master, which bears a powerful enchantment for draining magicka.

Starting Point: Bravil (outskirts)

@Serinaty - I'm not the GM in this RP but I've been in more than a couple RPs with him before and we (mostly) agree when it comes to roleplaying matters. Anyways, onwards to the point. Some stuff you can do to clean up your CS.

- Get rid of all of the unnecessary ellipses. An ellipse (...) every once in a while is fine when it's used to draw attention to a break in thoughts but it shouldn't be a replacement for basic sentence structures/conjunctions.

-While we're on the topic of grammar, you have a shitload of run on sentences, especially in the last portion of your Personality profile. That's an easy and quick fix that'll vastly improve the readability of your character sheet.

-Paragraphs. For the love of all things holy, use them. Walls of texts aren't fun to read. Look at Too Old 4 This's CS to see what I mean. But you need to bust up that wall you have to 2-4 individual paragraphs.

-You're also missing a history section. Kind of vital.

That's just the stuff I saw though. Super may have more or less critiques. It may seem like I'm just nitpicking with some of the stuff but your CS is representative to the amount of effort you put forth in a RP. When you post a messy CS, you will most likely also make messy and hard to read posts.

I did like your character overall, I just think that she could be represented better with those few fixes.

@Too Old 4 This - I really like your CS. There's some stuff I could nitpick but it's mostly minor issues not worth the bandwidth it'd take to fix them. Super may comment on how an enchanted Ebony dagger is a tad powerful when you combine it with the fact she's already an expert at stealth and master at conjuration and restoration. But that's really his call to make, not mine.

Anyways, like I said, all of my edits have no real authority whatsoever. Me and Super just have very similar playstyles/expectations so I just pointed out stuff that might be worth to consider fixing before Super evaluates your CSes. I'll have my own CS posted later today most likely, and if not today then definitely tommorow.

@Athos, shut your mouth, dirty slut.

@Serinaty, despite being an ass Athos brings up decent points. I don't mind bad grammar and punctuation, as everyone has to learn sometime. Hopefully if this rp is to last you will expand and grow as we continue. There's no need to edit your CS, just... try your best to follow the advice Athos has given in the future. I do see a history though, so I dunno what Athos was smoking, so accepted.

@TO4T, it's fine, really. Accepted. I love the history, it's nothing like I really expected.

I should note right now that I haven't really planned ahead (Besides my opening IC posts) and will pretty much be winging it, that's pretty much how I GM, so different personalities are very much welcome. I will cut in as The Ideal masters/Thalmor/Other Npcs if no one else wishes to take up the mantle, ultimately I'd like this to be a group RP and not just me directing the events of the story. As with my experience I feel like that is what most people are comfortable with.

Common sense and trust. It has crossed my mind, but I expect people to know the limits of their character and what is, forgive me, stupid. If I need to step in I will. But as of right now I don't see a problem.

@Superfly Thankies. My post's are usually better. I just have a hard time with CS's on occasion. I will admit I use ellipses way too much, but its just a style that I've developed over too many years of this shit. so...chances are i'll be using them a fuck ton in my posts. Its just how I write.

@Superfly Thanks. This will be the first time I've played a villain outside acting as GM. Hopefully she's challenging enough to keep the PCs in Bravil busy. Maybe she gets destroyed by midgame, maybe she winds up as a BBEG. Whichever. If the heroes rise to the challenge and dust her, I'm not attached and can role another character or continue playing as one of her spawn.

You can make more than one character right now if you wish. I'll be making two.

Villains are always endearing..., I always eventually get attached regardless of how vile they are, lol.

Just one major problem with your character sheet, Enalais, and that's the history.

This is the beginning of the second war with the Dominion. The Dominion and the Empire were at a stalemate since the White-Gold Concordat, which has effectively been broken right now for the first time, so your history doesn't fit. Also, as I said to Serinaty, work on your grammar and punctuation please. Fix the profile up and I shall review again.

I'd also suggest lowering some of those master skills, as for his age that's stretching. Don't be afraid to give him a few flaws.

I have a character being made who starts in Bruma, but yeah, it is looking like Bravil is the more popular starting point.
