The Real Time Strategies I like are kinda neat and nice in terms of the value of the game play in them, the Campaigns, the Base Building and the Rampage of the Tank Rushes.

1. Command and Conquer Red Alert 2/Yuri's Revenge
2. Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars/Kane's Wrath
3. Command and Conquer Generals
4. Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
5. Europa Univeralis IV - I only added this Grand Strategy game from Paradox Studios mainly because of 321 Hours playing it.
6. Dune 2000
7. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War #1 - The one with Base Building + All Expansions

This is now in no order but these are seven of my favorite RTS of all times but the C&C Series of games are near the top, since I grew up with them more than any other series.

Calls for top 5 rts of all time. Posts 7 of them. 3 of them are C&C.

Starcraft isn't even on the list.

God, It's almost like you want to give me a stroke.

#1. Star Wars: Rebellion. Hugely underrated game. Way, way ahead of its time.
#2. Age of Empires (2, mostly, and expansions). Still play this all the time.
#3. Red Alert.
#4. Starcraft I guess, just because it was really well balanced. It never really felt ground-breaking to me though. Just a solid, gold-standard game. Throw in Warcraft, too, because same reasons.
#5. Total War series.

There's plenty of other good ones. I was fond of 'World in Conflict' because it got rid of build orders, and had a pretty cool dynamic battle system. I do love Sins of a Solar Empire but there's no room on my list.

Top 5 RTS

#1, Dawn of War 1, expansions nix Soulstorm (some of my best memories in highschool centre around this game)
#2, Dawn of War 1, Firestorm mod (a mechanically different enough game to warrant a second spot :D very solid, very fun)
#3, Red Alert 1 (my childhood in a game)
#4, Homeworld 2 (the only 3D space RTS game I've played. Never did campaign, never needed to for the fun)
#5, .... hrm, Starcraft 1 or Warcraft 2

Wrong Genre Contenders

Grand Strategy; Crusader Kings 2 (It's not eugenics, it's just very strategic breeding and political marriages)
Tactical Strategy; Rome: Total War 1 (So many good times, so many conquered worlds that fell apart. Great)
God Game; Black & White 1 (Still the most amazing omg, even if I glitched it horribly that one time)
Turn Based Strategy; Civilization 5 (I don't care that other people like other ones more, I've put way too many fucking hours in this :D)
City Building; Tropico 4 (ALL GLORY TO EL PRESIDENTE)

I guess those are pretty good, too.

But I'm mostly mentioning it on the spectator angle more than anything else. I used to find it fun to watch, anyways.

1) Starcraft (My childhood in a nutshell)
2) Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos (My older childhood in a nutshell)
3) Dawn of War (My barely teenage years in a nutshell)
4) Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (I actually didn't remember the name of this game until I googled one of the cheats I remembered)
5) Some other one I'm forgetting.

I also love all of Paradox's Grand Strategy Games, but they aren't RTS, so pft.

Empire Earth was another good one. Similar to Age of Empires but research goes all the way into the future, with Digital (near-future) and Nano (distant-future) Ages.

It's mainly because I was deeply entranced by the C&C Franchise since Westwood Studios made it, too bad what happened to them. Damn it, EA Studios for ruining the C&C Franchise with the biggest abomination of an RTS called C&C 4: Tiberian Twilight and cancelling C&C Generals 2/C&C Online. It looks like EA is too far gone in releasing Sports games, the Sims and etc...

I'll give an slight honorable bow to Warcraft, Starcraft, Rise of Nations, Empire Earth, Age of Empires and some others forgotten about those other ones should've made this an Top 100 or something instead of a Top 5.

Besides that what's your favorite Turned Based Strategy games? I have a few akin to a lot.

Sword of the Stars I/II, Sid Meier's Civilization Series, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri; the X-COM Series including the Re-Imagining X-COM Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within games that was released awhile ago. Galactic Civilizations as a whole; even though I am waiting on Galactic Civilizations 3 to be cheaper on Steam; and Endless Space.

Even though Sword of the Stars 2's launch was horrible, I still like it.
