Breaking News:
The virus referred to around the world as the Sleeping Virus has broken quarantine. Three people in downtown New York city were diagnosed with it at 4:27 this morning. One of them was a member of the coast guard who boarded the ghost ship from Egypt which arrived late at night the day before yesterday. His fellow soldiers are blaming inadequate HAZMAT protocols, but that no longer matters. In every country it has entered it has quickly spread throughout the population, leaving devastation in its wake.
For the record, here's what we know so far:
Egyptian terrorists identified a disease in a remote tribe in South Africa that the locals called "the sleeping sickness". They brought it back to Cairo, where they incubated the virus in kidnapped homeless people. They didn't have the same immunity to it that the tribal people did, and quickly started slipping into comas. A few days later, people in Cairo started getting sick, and it started to spread.
Countries around the world started closing their borders, but the virus still managed to spread. This lead to the Viral Cure Phenomenon, where websites like youtube started getting thousands of videos posted to them of people in infected countries giving people advise on how to "cure" the disease. None of them worked but some, such as those that recommended the use of large amounts of stimulants or Vitamin B, did negate the symptom for which the virus is named long enough to keep the victims conscious while their failing metabolism shut down their internal organs.
Reports from Europe show that only one in ten thousand people have enough of an immunity to the disease to survive infection. So far no one, including the CDC, has been able to so much as slow the progress of the virus. Because of that, I would just like to say, goodbye. If anyone watching this survives, I hope that one day you can help rebuild what's left of human civilization.

That was broadcast one week ago. Since then humanity has been ravaged by the disease. What was left of the cities fell days ago as stimulant and pain fueled groups of criminals destroyed anything they wanted to. For some reason, though, you didn't die like the rest. You may have caught the disease, but you survived it long enough for your body to manufacture anti-bodies to it. Now you have to survive, or possibly rebuild, when even a city the size of New York likely has only one thousand people left alive in it.
My idea is that we meet up in a city, maybe New York or Atlanta, and rebuild on the edge of the city. Yes, I know there's been many end-of-the-world RPs out there, but I figured a disease would be better than aliens or zombies.

My Character:
Name: Bradley Ayers
Age: 29
Appearance:

Pre-outbreak Occupation: Factory maintenance technician
Special skills: fixing stuff, especially electronics
Personality: Likes figuring out how things work, and how to build things. This extends into most areas, not just machines.
Owned items: food/water (about 2 days), sodas, sports drinks, emergency protein (whey powder, protein bars, beef jerky), gun bag (small amounts of ammo for each), several Kevlar Vests. Random electrical components. Honda 2000i generator, 4 golf cart batteries, 700watt inverter, small space heater, radio, sleeping bag.
Vehicle: Cargo Van from an AC repair shop
Bio: When he caught the disease, he went home, intending to spend his last few hours playing video games. As expected, he went to sleep after sixteen hours, but unexpectedly, he woke up 43 hours later. Dehydrated and starving, he ate and drank as much as he could. After that, he stayed locked inside his apartment for a few days, tying his generator into his important appliances whenever he needed them, and when things had quieted down, he left, finding dead people, mixed with a few comatose people, everywhere.
He grabbed what he could, including a cargo van, food and a sleeping bag from a local prepper's house, fuel, guns and armor from the police station, and batteries from a nearby retirement community. He then started driving, hoping to come across anyone who survived.

((Can I vote for Atlanta? I vote this takes place in Atlanta.))

Name: Phoebe Jones

Age: 25

Appearance: Phoebe is a 5'5", tanned, muscular Caucasian chick. Her hair is a mess of dark brown frizz carefully contained in a ponytail. She has blue eyes and prescription eyeglasses. She wears the same outfit every day: a gray tanktop, sports bra, jeans, and her heavy-duty work boots that smell like sh** because they've been in sh** many times.

Pre-Outbreak Occupation: Phoebe worked as a zookeeper and tour guide for [TOWN] Zoo. She and two other zookeepers cared for the mammals of the zoo; feeding them, cleaning them and their enclosure, and helping raise the babies. Phoebe and the other zookeepers at [TOWN] Zoo took turns guiding the tour of the zoo.

Special skills: Phoebe has a vast knowledge of mammals, both native to the US and exotic ones kept at the zoo, such as sloths and monkeys. Her knowledge of reptiles, fish, birds, and invertebrates is rather lacking, but it covers the basics and some facts. (However, she does know a lot about worms, due to an odd fascination with the simple creatures.) Phoebe has a Masters in animal behaviorism, so her knowledge of the behaviors of animals is the best. She's quite skilled in quickly cleaning after a hazardous mess, such as elephant poo, or lion vomit.

Personality: Phoebe is friendly, optimistic, kind, and courageous at heart. However, she suffers from major depression, and did not handle the Outbreak well. (Luckily she stole about two years worth of her anti-depressant from the city's mental hospital just a week after the disease really set in.) She's darker now; paranoid, prone to lash out, and concerned only for her survival. She has little to trust but herself and her knowledge of survival.

Owned items: She carries pocket knife that function as a bottle opener, knife (duh), philip's head screwdriver, tiny pliers, and nail file. Her choice weapons is an aluminum baseball bat she picked up at Dick's Sporting Goods. She always has a backpack with food and water for the trip, and spare bags in it, in case she finds something useful that can't fit in her backpack.

Vehicle: A boring ol' bicycle. She ran out of gas for her Kia.

Bio: Phoebe moved around a lot as a kid. Her mother dated many men online after her father before finally finding "the one" in [TOWN] when she was 15. She and her mother moved in with him under the mutual agreement that he was not a father figure--he didn't want to be a father, and she didn't want one anyway. Phoebe finished high school here and moved on to college right away. She changed majors a lot, having trouble deciding between Biology and Psychology. Combining them turned out to be the right choice! She got her Masters and enrolled in an internship at [TOWN] Zoo and was hired right after graduation. Life was good, until some dumba** came home with a highly contagious disease that eradicated nearly all human life.

((You know, I see some parallels between this roleplay and that guy with ebola. Except this roleplay ends in death to (nearly) all humans, and that guy's just gonna die alone, bleeding from his skin, eyes, and all orifices.))

This is reserved for my Cs. I would say New Orleans simply because if this disease is mosquito born it would make this even better. And the swampy area would make it spooky.

Name: Mark T. Allen

Special skills: Knows how to shoot a pistol, Fast, Knows how to fix a car.
Personality: Independent, Rarely angry, Loud, Has an Imagination.

Mark was never the sharpest knife in the case but he was a B+ student during school. Instead of going to college though he went decided to go to become a police officer. When the disease hit he was not the highest rated person in the force but he wasn't the lowest. So far, we have one vote for Atlanta (and I'm kind of siding with that since I'm from GA), and one for Nya'lins.

Also Shoop: If this disease is based off of the real life sleeping sickness, it's carried by flies, and is truly caused by parasites, like malaria.

The Georgia Dome has the same, or greater capacity. There's also Centennial Olympic Field, which was greater in capacity until they converted it into Turner field, so it could be bigger.

Not sure yet. It could be that, or it could be something else. I'm thinking a radioactive virus, to account for the tiredness.

Here's a few questions for us to settle on:
1) What time of the year should it be? Winter would be good for the extra challenge, but for farming and the like it would need to be spring or summer.
2) Where should we live? I'm kind of partial to an apartment building or a gated community, like retirement homes, as it would work well with the need to keep us together, but would also be energy efficient enough to make sharing houses unnecessary (or at least you'd have fire places in the retirement homes).
3) Where should we meet? I'm thinking a Super Walmart, as it has most of what you'd need.

Character Sheet:

Name: Nick Baker

Age: 19

Appearance: Tall and gangly. In good shape in terms of endurance, but not in terms of anaerobic strength (ie lifting things). Black hair, brown eyes, Caucasian.

Pre-outbreak Occupation: Bicycle Messenger

Special skills: Very good biker and runner. In addition, very good at climbing and scaling things.

Personality: An awkward teenage type, only about two years out of high school, who lacks the confidence of his older companions. Friendly and polite, but a bit of a mess when talking to women, especially attractive ones. Will do anything to avoid conflict, and tries to get other people to not fight as well. Pretty much a natural follower not a leader, more willing to play for the team than for himself. Quite surprisingly, I am very level headed and rational in moments of crisis, which is quite the contrary when forced to make small talk during leisure.

Owned items:

1 Awesome light carbon bike, kept in perfect condition.
1 Bike lock and chain
1 Backpack
4 Cans of Ravioli
2 Water Bottles
1 Lighter
1 Knife
2 sets of t shirts, shorts, underwear, and socks
50 ft of nylon rope
various small bike repair and maintenance tools (Chain lengthener, wrench, oil)

Vehicle: Aforementioned awesome bike (Not sure if this counted as a vehicle or item.)

Bio: All of my life I've been pretty average, okay grades, okay social life, nice life overall. I was pretty awkward during highschool, but I had lots of friends and was never bullied or anything like that. I've only been particularly exceptional at two things, one of which is biking. Ever since I can remember I have been zipping around on two wheels, flying down streets at speeds that made even other daredevils gasp. It was the happiest moment of my life when my parents got me an ultra-light, ultra-fast, racing bike as a graduation present. After highschool I started attending the local community college in the small (Atlanta?) suburb in which I lived, but seeing as I only have one skill, I quickly picked up a job as a bike messenger, shuttling important messages and subpoenas between the various lawfirms of the big city. I was damn good at it too, and during rush hour, I was the fastest, most reliable way of getting physical packages from point A to point B.

I only figured out about my other exceptional quality about a week ago. Apparently I'm immune or resistant to... Whatever this thing is. My whole life, my parents, friends, and my city withered and died at the hands of this disease, as I watched, unaffected. I've been holed up in my apartment for about a week, but now I'm out of food and the water has been shut off. I suppose it's time to leave this place, the riots and fires seemed to have died out for the most part. I need to find out if anyone else made it, and I know that as long as I have my bike I should be just fine.

Fall sounds like a good time, since it's cold, but not too cold.

I like an apartment building. Mainly cause I live in one, but it's also practical: less buildings, thin walls, so any disasters (like a burglar or weather damage) can be heard by the neighbors, and they tend to be two to three stories, so flooding won't be too much of an issue. Also, my apartment building has fireplaces, and it's relatively cheap for apartments. The one big problem is fires, though. You're pretty much screwed when a fire spreads.

Super Walmart, Target, similar areas, I'm game for that.

So, How cold does Atlanta get in the winter? I'm not from the south, but I assume it doesn't get below freezing.

Apartment building sounds good.

Name: Jack Stevens
Age: 28

Pre-outbreak Occupation: CDC worker.
Special skills: He is very good with medicine and has vast knowledge on how to prevent any sort of disease from infecting anyone.
Personality: Jack isn't very social, he likes to avoid jokes or parties and is very serious about his duty as a CDC worker. He likes helping people against diseases because he doesn't like to see anyone be helpless against any sort of disease since his parents died from Cancer when he was young.
Owned items: Jack filled his stolen truck with 1 month worth of food and drinks for up to 5 people, several medical equipment (shots, first aid kits, pills, painkillers, antibiotics, and anti venoms of all kinds in the case of a venomous insect or snake bite.), he also carries a pistol, a G18 full-auto that he stole, and about 30 magazines for it.

Bio: Jack was born and raised by a middle-class family. At the age of 10, both of Jack's parents died after being diagnosed with Cancer, this inspired Jack's passion for helping people with disease, however, this also made Jack a very lonely guy, as he didn't want to spend time with others thanks to his depression. When he graduated college, he joined the CDC with hopes of being able to help people against diseases.

After a couple of years, Jack heard about this sleeping sickness and how they couldn't control it. One day he fell ill yet, the weeks passed on and Jack never died, his symptoms actually went away. Jack decided to put on a biohazard suit so he wouldn't fall ill again. Days later he decided to steal a supply truck and raid a store and fill the truck with a month's worth of supplies for up to 5 people. He went back to the CDC and took as much medical equipment as he could fit in the truck and left. He later found a military base almost empty as everyone there was either dead or dying. He looked for a gun and found a G18 with 30 mags and left the base. He is now looking for other survivors to start a small colony together and rebuild.
