Name: Menno van der Waart
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Hair Colour: Fair
Eye Colour: What an odd question! Green-brown-ish. A swamp-colour I like to call it myself.
(Note: Menno has a natural deep voice. Puberty hit him like a truck.)
General Appearance: Dark blond hair, a few freckles, brown-green eyes, not too pale and not too tanned. Slender frame, slightly muscular (slightly). Pretty long legs (proportionally that is). Medium-length curly hair. Sometimes short hair, it depends. I hate to shave and as such often have stubs on the face, which will likely grow into a beard unless there is a barber somewhere in this world.
I usually wear a rain coat, gym shoes, jeans, a plain vest without too much colour. Oh, and I always wear a leather belt. It’s my lucky belt, I’ve had it for years. I think I’m going to need that belt right now.
Oh, I also wear a necklace with a cross on it. …Why? Well, I am a Christian, yes, but not devout. Relax. I am not going to preach the bible to you or something. I wear it more for the family value to it, because it belonged to my grandfather. So you can imagine it’s pretty old.
(I tried to find a picture but fuck it. I’m not too sure myself what he looks like anyway so I will leave it as this.)
Personality:
Menno is generally a man of few words. Wait, do I have to introduce myself or just fill in this list?
… what? I have to describe myself? Ok ok, Jesus calm down.
Right.
*clears throat*
Hello, my name is Menno and my favourite animal is the Orca. They are kind of cool and bad-ass. Like, a large killer whale, but that’s not the main reason I like them. I like the contrast of their colours – black and white --and the fact that they are one of the sea’s largest predators. What I find more curious is that they actually belong to the same family as the oceanic dolphin. Their downside is that they eat seals. Seals are cool too. Too bad the Orca’s prey on them, but that’s how nature works I suppose.
Oh, right. I think I know something I can tell you now. I like animals. I’ve always wanted a dog as a pet but my father hates dogs. He told me that if I want a dog I can get one when I move out of house. As a kid I liked to play with the dog of my aunt, where I had to stay from time to time when my parents were busy. My favourite dog is the German shepherd because they look like wolves, and they’re very trustworthy and social. It has always been said that dogs are man’s best friend, to which I can only agree. I’ve always gotten along better with dogs than I did with most humans it seems.
What? No, I don’t have some kind of tragic background story, relax. Sure, I got harassed sometimes but who didn’t, really? I let the past rest and try to remain optimistic. I don’t like to be a weakling who keeps whining about all the evil in this world.
… I used to be that weakling, but that’s behind me now. Trust me, there are millions, no, billions of people out there on Earth who are worse off than me. I am not a pessimist or nihilist (anymore) and I don’t like to complain.
I’ve got a short attention span unless the subject is something I’m interested in, like nature. That’s probably why my girlfriend broke up with me after a week. People always said that I’m a ‘quiet boy’ and that still applies to the present day. I like to think of myself as a man now, however. (He’s got an Attention Deficit Disorder.)
I graduated chemistry and biology and am currently studying to become a maritime archaeologist. People say that I’m intelligent -- despite my childish tendencies --, but I won’t brag. I am gifted in some aspects, and a failure in others.
My parents always told me I’m too ‘reckless’. I can give an example; one time when I was a kid and me and my mother were walking down a side walk of a busy Wellington street (New Zealand, where I grew up), a kid was walking in front of me with a balloon. Suddenly he lost hold of the balloon and it flew towards the street with the speeding cars on them. I jumped on the street to grab the balloon (which -- needless to say -- shocked my mother) and gave it back to the kid. My mother scolded me for ages after that, that I risked my life for a balloon.
For the rest I’m good at sports. I like jogging through the forests and swimming. As a kid I could draw decently but I haven’t drawn in years. My father didn’t appear to be very fond of me because there wasn’t really something I was good at besides animal trivia and lore about dinosaurs. But I graduated anyway, hugely because of biology and chemistry. I never was much for socializing and only got my first girlfriend when I was 19. Shut up.
I don’t care much for religion and I mentioned earlier that I’m not a devout Christian but there is still this quote I always remembered:
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles."
— Jesus
My grandfather told me it. I’ve always tried to live by that quote… which is not easy. Sometimes my moral code fails me when I am pushed into desperate situations. As a teenager I often fought against other teenagers and got into trouble in the process. But that is beneath me now. Violence is not the answer etc etc.
History: Grew up in New Zealand, got bullied, became good, graduated from school, just moved out of house to study maritime archaeology but instead ended up here.
I left certain things out of my history because they don’t matter.
Are you already in the group, or will you meet up with them?: He will meet up with them shortly.
