If I am not mistaken, for a little kid in Japan to be calling someone older than them Onii-san or Onee-san, would be addressing them addressing the stranger politely and somewhat commonplace there. So, for your character to find it weird ... is weird...

Onii-san means big brother. the term for a "respected elder" is just San. Kids tend to call people they know really well Onii or Onee if they're really informal, because they're kids.

How to use the san honorific if they do not know their name? =.=
They use Onii-san, Onee-san, Oji-san, Oba-san. These are terms for relatives, but used for strangers when referring to them in a more polite/respectful manner.

Short Bio: : Emily - her RL name - was an avid gamer, having played most game that where out, and either completed them. or nearly completed them. So when Sword Art Online was announced, Emily had a small Nerd-gasm and built up enough money to buy it off ebay, having missed the initial rush. She knew she was getting ripped off with the ebay prices but she wanted the game fast. Once inside the game, she decided to go though each style of gameplay, and then see which one she liked most. There was no magic in this MMO, which canned her best class, but the curved swords looked promising - Curved. Swords. How could they not be awesome?! - and so she made herself a nice character that she would eventually build up to be a ninja-sterotype if she didn't get bored with it.

For this character, she would need a formidable name, one that struck fear into Player and Creature alike, while still being awesome. So she came up with a great name, not really bothered that it wasn't really great, because her game names where never really that good. And then the asshole when and locked her into her character, before she could even test out the rest of the classes. What kind of game maker does that?! And then there was that 'changing everyone to what they are meant to look like' 'you die if you die' but who cares about that? She was stuck as a ninja for the rest of her gaming! And with a stupid name as well. This was going to be so awkward.

Personality: Emily has a great deal of experience with most MMOs, and so knows exactly what to do in most situations. She is overtly friendly to everyone, and can sometimes make people a bit uncomfortable with the way she is so open-armed. She is always a nerd, and makes dated references all the time, challenging people to kill the mightiest monster in the forest with a herring, and the like. It is hard to be cold to Emily, since she doesn't really notice it, and carries on as if the cold-shouldered person is the friendliest person in the world. However, she doesn't like people who think, just because they are a higher level, they are better than her. Because they aren't.
