"London. Cant say I've heard of it, surely it's not in Emanseria. Are you from the north?"

Ada was suprised at the casual way he referred to his books, perhaps where he came from they were more common than here. He then started talking about shining pools and other weird things, she frowned deeply, doubting the sanity of the boy, he was obviously talking gibberish.

"Where are we! My boy, has someone given you any strange plants lately! We are in the Nairi forest, to the north is the Nimue river and to the West is Darja. Would you like to stay the night in my wagon, my companion should be joining us shortly, and you sound like you need a little... guidance. and rest"

Fritz

‘Nairi forest? Nimue river? Darja? Emanseria??’

Fritz’s mind raced with questions as he considered what Ada was saying.

“No one gave me any plants” said Fritz hesitantly “though I wouldn’t put it past that Aergar Wald character. Do you know who he is?”

Fritz had no idea where he was now, he already suspected that he was nowhere on earth at all. This didn’t make sense and he was definitely confused. As the wagon bounced along he frowned and thought for a moment before he took a deep breath and summoned his courage. He turned to Ada and slowly said “Are you telling me that I’m in a place called Emanseria, not Earth, and that animals can talk and there are forest imps and probably more? Are you even human? I suppose you aren’t, are you?”

“I’m sorry, I’m just confused. I don’t mean to be so forward. I just think I’m very lost and for some reason I’m sure you can help me”. Fritz looked Ada in the eyes as he spoke, breaking eye contact as he finished. What was going on?

Ada
"Yes I know Aergar, I usually seek him out when he's causing trouble but lately he's been stuck to declaring himself lord of the forest and that making the Elves angry. Before long he's going to trigger a war. I wish I could stop him, he is just so... troublesome. You'd sear he's a human infant by all the mischief he enjoys causing. The relationship we have is like a mother cat and her kitten. Except nothing at all like that."

Realisation struck Ada like a blow to the chest. This boy is the one in the prophecy: A human from Earth. With sudden harshness Ada whispered "Sshh! Do not mention those things to anyone ever again. You never know who is listening and what their motivations are." If this boy was genuine it would mean he'd need to be guarded by and protected, but by who?

"I'm sorry, I'm just confused. I don't mean to be so forward. I just think I'm very lost and for some reason I'm sure you can help me" Ada gulped, oh no, Oh No! No! No No no, not me, not again If he was sensing that she can help it meant that she was his chosen guardian for now. Darn it, and where is Duplo!

"My name is Ada Lovelace, I'm also known as 'the master, Gypsy Queen, Foe of the corrupt, friend of all', and several other names that I'm not going to mention." she laughed quietly for a bit before saying "No, I'm not human. I am a shape shifter. Humans don't exist here in Emanseria" she turned to Fritz and smiled "you're the only one!"
Then faced the road again "Which means that you are valuable. Very valuable. You're going to need to be on your guard Fritz, every one is going to want a piece of you, Elves or Fae, don't trust anyone. I understand if you want to go it alone, but first, please let me teach you what will get you through Emanseria alive."

Ada had just finished her mini-speech when Willow's ears flicked forward and the wagon lurched forward throwing Ada and Fritz backwards a bit. "Oof!" Ada hit her head on the wagon wall and the strange monocles she found and the black magic book fell out into the open before Ada could hide them. A strange whistle danced in Ada's ears, it sounded muffled but infringed with magic. Oblivious to the black book Ada sat up and listened. She recognised the whistle and so did Willow, he had lifted his head and his ears were pushed forward, listening. He trotted forward lifting his hooves high and trotting eager to get onto the road.

"Took you long enough, Duplo" Ada cursed and pulled herself up onto the drivers seat again.

Duplo
"Ada Lovelace, can't say I've seen her. She was in the town nearest to here earlier though, when I left I saw her change into cat form and slip into some mansion. Looks like she was getting into trouble, again" He sighed on the last bit. "Thank you for your information" Duplo turned to leave the clearing. Behind the man was a small path that led onto the main road, slightly concealed by plants, but visible enough. Duplo was disappointed by how quickly and easily the man shared such important information. She could be an assassin intending to kill Ada and in one sentence he had given her location away.

She walked through the path and onto the main road. She crossed her arms and strolled in the direction of the town. She nestled the tube close to her chest and walked. Far away and very faintly, she could hear a jingle of Willow's harness. Using a spell Ada taught her she sent out a magical whistle that only Willow and Ada would hear.

Meanwhile throughout Emanseria
An important Elvish Earl was hosting a diner party with a few fae of political importance. They were to discuss the plans of cutting down portions of the Nairi forest to use as resources for their manufacturing needs. Small pastries were served as an introduction before the main course.

The Earl usually imported his goods from a bakery in Tariq and their quality was always top notch. This batch however looked questionable. The figures frowned at the small smooth pieces in the crust of the bread but the Earl played it off saying that the manufacturer had explained that these were seeds and completely normal and in fact very good for digestion. Not everyone believed him and a couple of the Elves present just completely ignored the pastries with the excuse of a lack of appetite. The Fae however placed their trust in the Elf and pushed themselves through, forcing the disgusting bread down their throats.

Later that evening mid-meal everyone that had eaten the pastries began to feel ill and the meeting was ended early. The next day, two of the fae were sick in hospital for poisoning and a case was filed against the Earl and his cook for attempted murder. In protest to the court case the Earl's family and acquaintances went to into boycotting all Fae products and shops.

Aergar

The imp cocked his head at Phrenesis' proposition. Follow Ada, gain her trust? He smiled wryly, knowing that of all people Ada was the last person on earth who would ever think to trust him. The idea was very amusing and he let himself chuckle a bit. "It can be done," he said, "I am more than qualified. However," he paused, examining his pointed fingernails for a brief moment, "I must know what you have to offer me for this sort of job. Certainly it will consume a great deal of my time, I must have compensation. I'm sure you understand, it's just good business after all."

Aergar hopped up from his perch and leapt out across the water, deftly catching onto an overhanging bough. Hooking his knees over the branch, he dangled upside-down, his weight bending the tree so he hung just about eye-level with Phrenesis. Crossing his arms, he gave the spirit's host a critical look, tapping his chin thoughtfully. A couple of leaves had been shaken loose from his hair and fluttered down into the pool. "You really should learn to look after yourself. Eat more and sleep more for starters, those two are the basics really. If you paid closer attention to the bodies you inhabit, you can easily sense their needs. They'll last a lot longer if you do, instead of using them tirelessly as a puppet until they fall to pieces."

While he gave Phrenesis a moment to reflect on that, the imp began to consider for himself what he would do. Regardless of what Phrenesis offered him, he was curious enough--and bored enough--to take him up on the task. Still, he would milk it for all it was worth, because to be fair what he said about it being time-consuming was true, and would certainly spare no amount of effort on his part. He began running through multiple scenarios in his mind, how he ought to go about doing this. He instantly rejected about a hundred or so initial ideas, focusing in on a handful that could work. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, yes this could certainly work.

Laakari

"Now read it back to me."

"Flore exper…giscimini…" the girl hesitantly pronounced the words, "Floresco… ease formosus!" wide eyes were fixed intently on an earth-filled flowerpot. Several minutes passed and nothing happened.

The girl's instructor, an elven man with charcoal skin and ebony hair that fell past his shoulders in a wild uncombed mane, shook his head. "Your magic doesn't seem to be for flora." He stood and placed the little pot back on the shelf from whence it came. The sunflower would have to take its time and grow naturally. The elf, or half-elf as the case happened to be, stretched. He was dressed quite minimally in a pair of silk trousers, treading barefoot over the moss-covered floor of the green house, a worn red scarf was tied round his head, covering his right eye. At least, if he'd had a right eye it would've been covered. As it was, he only had the left one, and it was a soft light blue color. He entered through the back door of the simple cottage that was his home. If you glanced out the kitchen window, beyond the garden and the green house, the earth fell away and afforded a view that stretched on for miles going down the side of the mountain. If you cared to hike up the mountain, just a few miles away the great city of Eira was perched like a bird of prey, watching over the Jairo mountains.

"Novell, why don't you make us some tea? I think the stew is just about ready."

"Yes, Uncle Laakari," the little girl, about nine years old but much younger in appearance due to her innocent nature, nodded and went to work filling the kettle and stoking the small wood-burning stove. Laakari himself checked the pot hanging over the hearth, which bubbled away and let off the most pleasing aroma. It looked like they were going to have a quiet evening at home. The elf ladled out two bowls while Novell set the table and the kettle began to boil and filled the tea infuser with an herbal blend before leaving it to steep. Dinner was short with little conversation, and by the time the kitchen was cleaned up and the dishes put away Novell was yawning and her eyes were drooping.

"You walked a long way today," Laakari observed, "gathering the herbs for this tea." He sipped the very opaque brew, never bothering to remove the infuser lest any bit of the bitter flavor go to waste. Novell always preferred hers with honey and a bit of milk, but Laakari enjoyed the pure raw taste of unsweetened tea.

"I'm not tired," the child insisted, even as she rubbed her eyes. "Are you going to stay up late again?"

Laakari nodded, "Aye, I have work to finish. I have medicines to mix that the doctor in Eira is expecting delivered tomorrow morning." He scooped the tiny fae girl up in his arms. Novell curled up like a kitten as he cradled her, careful not to bruise the little gossamer wings. By the time he had carried her to her bedroom she was already asleep. He tucked her into bed and extinguish the lamp, before retreating to the laboratory on the other side of the house.

This place was where Laakari was in his element, the lab took up nearly half of the ground-floor and its basement was even larger, barely leaving any room for the cellar-pantry. He lit a single wick, which flared up and raced along a thin wire which in turn lit each lamp that hung along the wall all round the room. It was a relatively simple trick he'd set up some time ago, which saved him a lot of time. The small burning flames reflected off the metal plates of the elf's right arm, which was in fact not his arm at all, but a clever contraption of pulleys and wires encased in a rare light metal which very closely resembled a hand and arm. It was permanently attached to his own muscles and ligaments and bone, so though it was not nearly as dexterous as a hand of flesh, he had quite an impressive range of motion and strength. It was possibly the most advanced manufactured limb ever made, and it served Laakari well. As it ought to, since he designed and constructed it himself.

He situated himself before one of the many long tables, covered in colored glass bottles and cups and twisting tubes, and little boxes filled with all kinds of raw and refined materials. A book lay open on the one side, and he bent to read words that he had penned himself on another long night such as this many years before. "One part powdered aeries root to two parts water, one part wine vinegar…" he mouthed the ingredients to himself as he began to concoct the necessary elements. Making medicines was fairly simple, and not very interesting to him, but it paid very well and an alchemist such as himself does need a source of income to pay his taxes and purchase materials that are not found in the local wilds. Ah yes, and he had a child to feed. As he worked, he smiled at the thought of Novell. He had always loved children, though never had the patience to have his own. Novell was very smart though, and the youngest apprentice he had ever taken on, and he did not regret one moment since that first day when he taught her how to read.

She had taught him very much as well, in fact he sometimes envied the simple, straightforward mind of that child. Everything was black or white, good or bad, yes or no. There were no grey areas to be found and everything was always so easy for her. He hoped she would always be so innocent, so charming. She called him uncle but to him she was like a daughter.

When he had finished the order, Laakari carefully cleaned his instruments and put everything away. Still he was not yet ready to retire for the evening. Descending the stairs, he withdrew a brass key from his pocket and unlocked the door, lighting the lamps on the lower level in the same way as before. He came to another door, a smaller room within the basement, which he unlocked with a smaller silver key. Casting a wary glance around to be sure he was alone, he carefully pushed the door open and stepped inside. A few minutes later, he exited and locked the door once more and extinguished the lamps by pulling a cord that triggered snuffers to fall on the burning wicks. He locked the basement door, ascended the stairs, and extinguished the lights in the upper laboratory before finally retiring for the night.

Fritz

Fritz listened to Ada, the implications of his situation now fully beginning to sink in. It was practically world shattering, so utterly mind blowing that he could do nothing but gawk for a moment or two. He was jarred back into focus as the wagon lurched and he was thrown backwards, a clattering drawing his attention as he saw a pair of glasses and book tumble out into the open.

"Took you long enough, Duplo"

Ada’s words added to Fritz’s confusion, but for once he didn’t outright question what he had heard. Better to see what happens and just try and keep up for now, he thought. He was still thinking about what Ada had said, him valuable? She had also offered to teach him the skills he would need to survive this Emanseria place. So was he right to assume that this place was going to be dangerous and that people, things, were going to be after him? Either way Fritz figure out he was best sticking with Ada, best to find out whatever it was he needed to learn.

Grinning slightly Fritz realised that he was excited.

Phrenesis

The woman watched Aergar closely, her eyes following his every movement as the imp leapt up onto an overhanging branch and dangled as he examined her. She took a brief note of his suggestions about taking better care of herself, after all she had an image to maintain. She watched coyly as Aergar’s mouth twitched with a smile as he was already considering the offer. ‘Good’ she thought to herself, she was pleased she had picked a worthy candidate for the role.

“What can I offer you?” she said smoothly and with poise, more rhetorically than as a question.

She let the words lingered in the air for a moment, savouring in the suspense she cuckled softly for a brief moment.

Sparrot was once more closely following the conversation with his small dark eyes, he cawed before he spoke “Aergar Wald, Lord and King of the forest. Hail King Aergar the Eternal”.

“Thats right Sparrot” cooed the woman “we will make Aergar Wald King of the forest, granting him full ownership of the land and everything on it.” She smiled and addressed the Imp directly “Imagine if you had control over the entire forest, not just in spirit but it law as well. You could truly do as you wished. You’d have control over the Nymph’s glades, the Centaur hunting grounds, the Elven cities – I could go on, but I sense you get the picture. You could do as you wish and neglect anything you saw fit to. With Ada Lovelace out of the way there would be nothing to oppose you or I, the forest and lands beyond would truly be ours to toy with”.

Aergar

King of the forest, of all forests? Every tree in Emanseria under his command? The prospect of that kind of power was enough to send a shiver of pleasure up his spine. "My my my you certainly are a temptress." To have power over even the elves, it was almost too good to be true. But then, so long as he did not destroy the forest they would not oppose him, and he certainly did not want to destroy his own kingdom now did he? While it was a grand offer indeed, Aergar knew he would probably have to do more than just win Ada's trust. She was a cunning woman and this was not the first time Phrenesis had attempted to get ahold of her. He would have to be careful. Yes, the more he thought about it the more he realized just what kind of challenge he was facing. Still, King of the Forest. A fae had not ruled the forest for thousands of years, perhaps it was time once again for a king to arise. Royalty was in Aergar's blood, why shouldn't he be king? In fact, he could think of no better person, not that he would relinquish this claim to them if they existed.

"Very well lord--or should I say lady?-- Phrenesis," he said with a crooked smile, "I accept your offer."

He saluted Sparrot as well. "I shall reign benevolently over every rock and tree and ant, and the day of my ascension shall be the day of your victory, and we'll make it a national holiday!" He let out a whoop like an excited young boy, just imagining the stories future generations of fae would tell. The ascension of the great King Aergar, the eternal as Sparrot put it. Yes he liked that title, for even if his body were to pass away his spirit would live on in the whole of the forest. He started to laugh at the thought, a funny sort of giggle that seemed to fit perfectly with the noise of rustling leaves and running water, the kind that would definitely send chills through you if you didn't know its source.

After recovering his composure and brushing a tear from his eye, still chuckling delightedly every so often, he managed to ask, "What is it you'll do in the meantime? Sleep more I hope."

Ada and Duplo

Momentarily forgetting about the boy next to her Ada made the same magical whistle that Duplo sent to her. Amazingly she stood and managed to maintain balance on the swaying wagon. Out of the darkness of the road ahead something blinked and a girl with a rabbit mask appeared. "Hail! The mighty Duplo has returned, what beast hath she slain this time?" Ada greeted the girl with surprising warmth. "Ada. Who's the boy?" Ada walked over, moving swiftly and gracefully. Her arms swung but her head stayed still. The white mask standing out in the dark. "This here is Fritz. He's joining us for a while, his two legs can only carry him so far." Duplo recognised the code and nodded not pushing the case further. Long ago her and Ada agreed that when one mentioned something about two legs that could not carry, they were talking about someone they would be helping. Wile the wagon was still moving, Duplo moved to run her hand down Willows back then as it approached, grabbed the wagon wall and keeping one foot on the floorboards she hung there, moving with the wagon but not on it. "Ahead there is a camp, we can join. I will set up in the mean time. Ada nodded and the girl hopped off and disappeared.
"Fritz, I want to ask you. How did you land up here" Ada was suddenly mysterious. Obviously there was something she and Duplo were not showing.

Phrenesis

The woman smiled as she watched Aergar shiver in pleasure at the prospect of becoming King, just as he hoped he would.

"Very well lord--or should I say lady?-- Phrenesis," he said with a crooked smile, "I accept your offer."

‘Wonderful’ thought Phrenesis to himself, ‘Everything is finally coming together’. He spent a few brief moments picturing what would become of the realm once Aergar was in power. Sweet unadulterated chaos, madness running thick and pure- exactly as he had envisioned. War and death probably a side product of such a realm, but that was not his concern.

"What is it you'll do in the meantime? Sleep more I hope."

The woman nodded gently, in thought for a moment before she responded to Aergar “Yes, sleep and eat, as you say. I will be returning to Tariq, by now I hope that the majority of the elven court are under my influence, next will be the fae court. From there it should be simple enough to arrange events to align with my plans and set in motion a few other little schemes and ploys, you know this and that.

The woman slowly moved across the bloody pool to the edge, her slender fingers reaching into the small pile which comprised of her belonging and clothing before withdrawing two small black bound notebooks. They were somewhat tattered and looked aged, the pair tied together with a length of string which the woman untied before slinging the rope to the side uncaringly. Moving back towards the imp she explained “These are some of my fondest little toys, which will serve the purpose of allowing us to communicate for the time being as inconspicuously as possible. Anything written in one of them appears in the other, allowing us to speak anywhere.” Phrenesis decided not to tell him just how valuable this particular pair was, or that they had once been used by a demon to communicate with unwitting mortals on Emanseria. He held on of the small books out to Aergar waiting for him to take it.

“As for you my little darling” she said turning to Sparrot with a grin “I have a task for you as well, but I will instruct you about that soon enough”. Glancing back at Aergar she added “take as long as you please, my dear Aergar, we have the luxary of time for now. If anything should change then I will inform you”. She tapped her note book briefly before turning away, a grin still framing her face as she did.

Fritz

He watched as at the sound of Ada’s magical whistle a figure emerged from the darkness surrounding the wagon, he was alert and for a brief moment he almost panicked, that was before Ada and the rabbit woman greeted each other, or rather Ada greeted her and she immediately asked who he was. He watched this Rabit woman, thin and dainty, a large Rabbit mask obsquring her face completely. A few moments later after a brief discussion the newcomer bounded off into the darkness once more, off to set up at this camp she was talking about.

"Fritz, I want to ask you. How did you land up here?"

As Ada asked her question the air was suddenly thick with mystery, and Fritz paused briefly before explaining “I was exploring around a small wooded area when I became lost, which was odd because I was sure that the ‘forest’ I was in wasn’t nearly big enough to lose my way, but here I am”. He continued to explain the events that had lead him here, the sparkling pool, the dizzy feeling he had experienced before falling forwards – then waking up and stumbling upon Aergar and the Raven, before eventually finding Ada beside the road. He tried to leave no details out, once he had finished he watched Ada carefully for a response, still curious to learn as much as he could about his situation.

Aergar

He snatched up the little book and examined it curiously, quite visibly excited. He ran his fingers over the worn leather bindings and then flipped through the pages. The paper was smooth and bleached pure white, several sheets had apparently been torn out long ago. Marvelous, though he didn't have a writing utensil at hand. Experimentally, he pricked his palm with a long pointed fingernail, wetting the tip with a small drop of blood and using this as a pen to inscribe the word "Doppelgänger" in the top corner of the first page. "Marvelous!" he exclaimed as the crimson letters appeared in Phrenesis' book. He tucked the notebook into an inside pocket of his green waistcoat. "We shall keep in touch, I think."

He felt as if he was being dismissed with those words. Pulling himself up into the tree, he sprang from that branch to a neighboring one. With one final wave to the pair of them he disappeared into the canopy. Traveling back the way he had come, he was cautious to remain stealthy. A good thing too. He was nearly to the main road, having paused to rest in the crook of a branch, when a slender figured dashed by below him, so fast that he didn't get more than a glance at the thing, which appeared to be black with a white head and long ears. Odd, it seemed to be traveling the same direction as he had been. Aergar decided to follow it. Perhaps this creature was related to Ada in some way.

He wasn't wrong. They soon intercepted the gypsy wagon, and Aergar hung back to avoid detection. How interesting, she had picked up that boy from before. And the person he'd been following, a young woman in a rabbit's mask… could she be the driver from before? Three of them then. He pondered over his options as the wagon rolled by. As he was, Ada would never trust him, at least not completely, but he wasn't so certain that he needed her to trust him completely. Phrenesis just wanted to know what kind of pastries she liked, though he doubted she would tell him if he just hopped down onto the wagon and asked. No, that was too brash, and too sudden. Besides, there were likely other things the ghost would want him to do.

The rabbit girl departed, running on ahead of them, and in that moment Aergar decided on a plan of action.
As the horse and wagon trundled along carrying Ada and Fritz to their destination, a frail voice called out from the dark. "H-hello? Anyone? Is a-anyone there?" There was a loud, awkward scraping of sticks and leaves, the dragging of feet. A fragile figure stumbled out of the brush directly into Willow's shoulder. Alarmed, the figure jumped back, tripping and falling in an ungraceful heap. It was a girl. A fae girl judging by her wings, though they seemed crumpled and damaged, and her clothes which were now tattered and dirty, they looked to have once been quite fashionable. She looked up fearfully, eyes wide and searching, brilliant blue innocent eyes full of questions.

"Where am I?" Her voice trembled. She brushed a tangle of auburn hair back from her face, which was smudged and tear-streaked. Her lower lip shook as she tried to fight back another round of tears. She looked at Ada and Fritz pleadingly, searchingly. "I don't remember how I got here, I don't--" she sniffed, wiping her eyes, "I don't know where I am." She cast a look around the dark, foreboding wood and shivered. Judging by her clothes and shoes, or shoe as she seemed to have lost one of them, she was from one of the fae cities, likely a high-middle class citizen. The ruined fabric had once been brightly colored, the style of the bodice and skirt were the latest fashion in the north. She was apparently very unaccustomed to the forest and its terrain. She wrung her hands worriedly, considering what she ought to do if these strangers wouldn't help her.

Willow snorted and spooked as a small girl fell out of the brush and onto his shoulder. Ada who had been listening to Fritz' story was brought back to reality, her mind had been reeling making connections and sparks flying as facts intertwined with other facts.

She jumped a little at the girl and looked over her with a sceptical eye. Another hitch hiker. "What's your name?" Ada watched the girl, there could be a group of bandits close behind. "You are in the Nairi forest, about 3 days from Haneul. Where are your parents?"

Two thoughts crossed Ada's mind. One: the girl was part of a group of bandits and they should high tail it out of there before they ambush the wagon. The second: this girl was genuinely lost and needed help, which she could give. But at what cost and the wagon was already full. Willow's strength had a limit and unless Ada could get another horse to lessen the burden she could not take another passenger on the wagon. Ada slowly wrapped her fingers around the dagger she kept hidden in her skirt.

The girl sniffled and her thoughts settled a bit. She didn't take her hand off the dagger. "Are you in need of help?" a stupid question, but this would be the question the bandits would want. "There is a town down this road, you can stay shelter with us for the night, and I will arrange for someone to take you to town tomorrow to find your way."

The shaken fae girl managed to regain some semblance of composure. "My name's Kirin Cobb, I'm from Eira… I was on holiday with my cousin and we were traveling to Darja, but we went off the road and our cart was trapped in a bog. My cousin tried to save the horse but… they both got stuck." Her voice choked up, "They drowned. I didn't know what to do. I tried to find my way back to the road, but then it got dark…" Fresh tears started to roll down her pale face. "Please help me. I'm so afraid."

Her lower lip trembled as did her crumpled wings. She glanced nervously from Ada to Fritz, seeing the doubt on the gypsy woman's face. "Please. My father's a rich merchant in Eira. He'll reward you generously for your trouble."

Laakari

"Why do I have to wear shoes?" Novell complained as Laakari laced up the soft leather slippers on her tiny feet. "I never wear shoes. My feet are tough!"

Laakari chuckled. "You're more like an elf than a fairy." He finished and tousled her tangled hair. "Out here in the forest the earth is clean, but city streets are dirty so you must protect your feet."

"I want to be an elf like you and never wear shoes."

"Even I'm wearing shoes today," said the ebony elf, lacing up his own boots.

"If I ride on your shoulders do I still have to wear shoes?"

"Yes."

Novell pouted as Laakari gathered his supplies, but she was too excited about the trip to stay indignant. At Laakari's bidding, she skipped through the open door and together they began the trek up the mountain to Eira. In a little more than an hour they had entered the city gates and had to undergo a customs check by the guards, something that had never before happened on any of Laakari's visits, and from the tidbits of information the guards provided him he deduced there had been some kind of affair about some very important political figures and… poison? It was all very vague, but in the end they let him and the girl through, due to the fact that one of the lieutenants knew the elf through a previous encounter where he had sold the man a tonic for his ailing wife.

He warned Novell to stay close and she clung tightly to his hand as they navigated the bustling city streets, stopping first at the local pharmacy that bought most of his home-made medicines and remedies. With that money, he then visited a glassmaker to purchase more small bottles and another shop where he picked up miscellaneous supplies. Lastly, as a special treat, he took Novell to a seamstress and had her fitted for a new dress, one he allowed her to choose herself. The little girl was overwhelmed with all of the choices, so many colors and fabrics and styles, but finally settled on a knee-length one richly patterned with dark green ivy leaves and gold trim with a matching ribbon for her hair. She insisted on wearing it right away and marched along proudly next to Laakari, taking each turn as a chance to spin and watch her skirt flair out and flutter around her legs.

As they waited on the street corner to traffic to thin out, she twirled around, spreading her little gossamer wings an balancing on one foot. "Shall we visit your parents today?" Laakari asked, interrupting her little game. "I'm sure they'll want to see your new dress."

"Yes!" she beamed at him, "Can we go to the market first and buy mum some fresh fruit and bread like last time?" Laakari nodded and Novell did a giddy little dance. They went and did so, picking up a basket and filling it with fresh fruits and vegetables, bread and cheese and a whole smoked salmon. Their course changed then, taking the pair to the outskirts of the west side, where the houses gradually became less and less beautiful. An air ship drifted by overhead, and Novell stared up at it in wonder. They came to a ramshackle little house on a narrow street. The smell of garbage mixed with soot hung in the air. Laakari knocked on the door, which looked like it was ready to fall off its hinges.

They waited a moment or two, then the door cracked open a few inches and a thin fae woman peered out. Recognizing the elf, she threw the door wide with a smile, and Novell ran forward to embrace her mother. She bade them in and scolded Laakari for giving her so much, insisting that they stay for dinner because there was no way she and Novell's father could eat all that he had brought them by themselves. They stayed several hours, Novell did all the talking while Laakari resigned himself to merely observing them. Novell's parents were poor, but they managed to do the best with whatever they had, and expressed their gratitude to Laakari for taking care of their daughter at every available opportunity. He always just shook his head and said it was because Novell was very smart and it was his pleasure to be able to teach her. The reunion was over all too soon though, goodbyes were exchanged, and Laakari and Novell were again on their way. The sun had sunk low in the sky by now, they would have to hurry to make it home before dark.

"Alright come with us" Ada offered her hand for the girl and pulled her up onto the seat and sat her down. Ada sat between the girl - Kirin - and Fritz and clicked for Willow to walk on. She mentally made a point to get rid of everything but the essentials in her wagon. It was getting cluttered and she was concerned about Willow's health if he continued to pull such a heavy load for so many hours. At least they were closer to Haneul, Ada considered purchasing another horse to help bear the load. Thinking of the cost of purchase and feeding, and extra time it would take to care for the additional creature she pushed the thought to the back of her mind. Fritz and the girl made pep talk while Ada watched Willow trudge along, lost in thought.

"Kirin, Fritz. We are going to be joining a party camp for the night and if someone calls me by another name, just go along with it. Infact don't call me by any name if you can help it. And don't share information about yourself."
Duplo who had set up a few tents and used a spell to draw some water up in a pail (both she took from the wagon before departing) sat listening to the conversation of the surrounding gypsies. A couple were talking about an amazing encounter they had in Jabari with a travelling illegal druid, the tale involved a chase by rooftop by several Fae and an Elf mage that used an Earth spell to make a trench that the criminal was caught in. The story sounded a little exaggerated, but was entertaining.

Ada and her recruits joined them and Ada introduced Kirin and Fritz to Duplo "This is my apprentice, Duplo. She is a skin changer and takes this form under the watch of Claire de Lun (Elvish goddess of night and beauty.) Fritz I believe you and her are in similar situations."

Sitting to one side and letting the kids talk Ada and Duplo conversed and each of them shared the tales of their activities while apart. "Ada, I found this" Duplo produced the wooden tube and handed it to Ada, she took the container and opened it with a unlocking spell. Inside was a scroll and on it written in the magic language was the will of an old Fae scholar that deceased little under 50 years ago

.... and finally I leave my life's knowledge to my heir, Zlata Joanna in the hopes she will make use of it. My book "altero" contains all my findings and hypothesis’s on otherwordly matters and being from them. In this book I discuss the supernatural, other-worlders and cast offs. I also explore the idea of higher beings and their origins. This book contains information gathered from our neighbouring country Benjaro, to which I travelled nigh-on 35 years ago and many legends that I have gathered through extensive travel throughout Emanseria and other settlements along the coast of the Talin Ocean. ...

Ada skim-read the rest of the document and rolled if safely back in the tube. Before she could ask Duplo replied "Zlata is in Eira, she moved there after a fire in her family home. "I also found something, while in that town's headquarters the priest had this locked away" Ada brought out the parchment and tried to cover the gashes made by her cat-teeth. However she could not finish as in that moment the ground began to shake and tremble and the sound of hooves on forest floor filled the clearing. Willow looked up from his feed trough and his ears swivelled with fear, birds left the trees and squawked in the night silence. The gypsies dived towards their horses, grabbing them by the reins and keeping them put. Ada stood holding Willow's reins, and kept her other hand on her dagger, indicating to the children to hide in the wagon a short distance from them. Duplo had somehow in the chaos whipped out two swords that gleamed in the moonlight, she began to move ever so slowly, turning and tilting her head to listen. The swords glistened when they caught star of fire light.

There was a moment of silence then before anyone moved a group of five centaurs leaped into the clearing and came to a short halt from their gallop. Their sides heaved and glistened with sweat. Green paint adorned their sides and bags hung on the sides of each beast. They were all tall and well muscled, 3 had horns protruding from their temples - the Sires no doubt. Two of the males(sires) had dark coats and the other was a palamino. One dam was a bay and the other a liver chestnut. Each centuar had a bow and arrow across their chests. On the back of the liver chestnut dam sat a grey haired woman with windblown hair and she clung terrified onto the mare. The biggest of the males said something to them all as they stopped and as a group the herd they lifted their chins and raised their palms. The dam carrying the woman then dropped to her knees and the woman slunk off, shakily her feet touched the ground and she stood unbalanced with one hand still on the dam's back.

The large male spoke and the woman listened. No one recognized the language and Duplo brought her swords a little higher "what is he saying?" she whispered to Ada. "Don't know" she whispered back, trying to turn to look at the children without moving. The horses around the clearing relaxed but still kept a firm eye on the intruders. The woman spoke and her use to the centaurs was shown "We are the Sigurd herd, travellers passing through Emanseria. My name is Albina, I shall act as a translator. This herd comes in peace and brings gifts and friendship, we ask only that we may share your company for the night and share in the safety of this gathering." The woman spoke slowly and her accent was thick from the northern regions of Emanseria. Everyone relaxed slightly, Ada let her hand fall from her dagger but kept a defensive position, Duplo dropped her swords and sheathed one, keeping the other in front of her just pointing down. A gypsy from across the clearing - one of those playing music and dancing called out "Anyone is welcome if they bring food and good cheer! Welcome friend! Come join the festivities, we have a birthday to celebrate! My dearest mother here turns 56 today!" The woman translated and the centaurs beamed, exited. The male walked forward, holding hands with the grey woman and they talked to the birthday mother, then the bay dam walked over and produced a delicate silver chain - a necklace for a centaur, and a girdle on this human. The woman thanked her and curtsied.

Ada laughed and clapped her hand on Duplo's shoulder. "Relax my friend. We can talk in peace, come Fritz, Kirin! Tonight is a treat!" Everyone gathered in a large group around the centaurs as they dropped down and relaxed. The woman then began to tell their tale and translated for the gypsies. The palamino male did most of the talking - apart from the woman of course - and the liver chestnut mare cared for them all. Brushing mane's and tails and rubbing in poultices. Then the last dark coated male who had remained somewhat quiet throughout the events pulled off a deer carcass he was carrying, and with the help of the big male and many gypsy children they gathered firewood and lit a large bonfire over which the carcass was cooked. Salads were made out herbs and berries. Which the centaurs snacked on leaves they pulled straight off branches. The meat was the most delicious Ada had tasted in a long time and she made a mental point to get the recipe. The meat was spicy - thanks to the application of numerous herbs and spices the centuars produced - but satisfying and left her throat tingling for more.

Someone brought out a barrel of ale and everyone danced and laughed, talked and ate, drank and were marry late into the night. The same nurse-centuar went around to everyone's horses and offered better feed, poultices and advice from the horses to their owners. Willow grazed content with the other horses, swishing his tail. Ada was happy to find out he was content and the weight was not too much for his broad, strong shoulders.

Fritz

A rustling sound drew his attention, instantly his mind flashed to monsters and dragons and all other manor of things it may be, before a brief moment later a small girl tumbled onto the road after colliding with Willow. Ada was briefly on edge for a moment, the appearance of this girl surprising her before she began to look her over with a sceptical eye. Fritz stared at the girl, taking in her features, her tangled auburn hair and fair face. But most of all he stared at her eyes, large shimmering blue eyes that were filled with an expression that he couldn’t break away from. He then noticed the girls damaged looking wings before quickly realising that she was some kind of fairy person, or fae as he believed they were called.

"Where am I? I don't remember how I got here, I don't--" the girl sniffed, wiping her eyes "I don't know where I am."

She was lost… just like he was. Surely Ada had to help this girl? Fritz watched her intently as she spoke, listening to her story. Kirin was her name, Fritz repeated it in his head ‘Kirin’.

As she joined them on the wagon Fritz was suddenly slightly nervous, however he soon managed to find his words and offered his apologies for what had happened to her cousin and introducing himself. He left out the part about being a lost human from a different world.

Soon Ada told them both of a camp where they would be staying for the night, warning them briefly about not sharing to much information. Fritz made a mental note to do that more in the future, it seemed safer that way. Soon enough they rounded a bend and the camp came into sight, a slightly bigger camp than Fritz had pictured.

There were several other gypsies moving around and doing numerous things, some colourful wagons and tents littering the clearing. He also spotted the strange rabbit woman who was in the final stages of setting up a few tents, Ada heading directly towards her before introducing her as Duplo, a skin changer and more importantly apparently she was in a similar situation to that of himself. He made another mental note, though this time it was to talk to Duplo at some point and find out just how similar their situations were.

As Ada and Duplo began to talk Fritz dismounted the wagon, trying to think of something appropriate to say to Kirin. Eventually he blurted “Does that hurt?” before adding “I mean your wings look hurt, are you okay?”

But then suddenly the ground began to rumble and the gypsies started to rush around, securing horses, some hiding themselves whilst others grabbed various weapons. At Ada’s urgings he rushed to her wagon with Kirin before hiding inside of it. He peered through a gap to try and see whatever it was that was coming.

A group of half-men half-horses leapt into the clearing, five in total with a woman riding on the back of one of them. “Centaurs!” gasped Fritz quietly to himself in disbelief.

After a few more moments the woman who was riding one had dismounted and translated their words, sharing their peaceful intent and desire to share the camp. At that there was a collective show of relief and one of the gypsies happily asked them to join in the celebration for his mother’s birthday. At that things seemed to resume to normal as the members of the camp emerged from where abouts they were either waiting or hiding and the music once more resumed with the buzz of conversation.

"Relax my friend. We can talk in peace, come Fritz, Kirin! Tonight is a treat!" beamed Ada happily.

At that Fritz jumped down from her wagon before turning and offering his hand to Kirin to help her down.

“I’ve never met a centaur before” he said, before he hesitated and quickly added “I’m from a very sheltered place and actually before I met you I hadn’t met a fae before either… well apart from one I think, but I’m not so sure I’d like to meet him again.”

As he spoke he spotted in Ada’s wagon his glasses and the silver tray where they had fallen earlier. “Huh…” he said as he wondered exactly how they had come to get here. He picked them up and rubbed the lenses on his shirt before placing them on his head and looking around happily. Everything was much sharper and in focus now, reminding just how much he really needed them. Just as he was about to move away he noticed the ashes in the silver tray and he poked at a few scraps revelling a shred of the cover. ‘Is that my algebra book?’ he thought to himself uncertainly. Maybe Ada had stumbled upon it and… he made a note to ask her about it at some point in the evening, though if anything he was somewhat glad the book was no more. Algebra sucked. Turning his mind and back to the tray he joined Ada and Duplo where they were stood, watching all of those around them. He was fascinated by the centaurs and what they were doing, and still could quite believe what he was seeing.

Fimion

The noise from outside of his tent was what had woken him, he was sure of it – that and the delicious smell. He yawned and ran his hands through his messy chestnut hair, starting to get long enough that he should think about cutting it before rubbing his stubble, which again he should probably shave sometime soon. He threw a somewhat ragged and dirt covered tunic on before he emerged into the night air, content that his nap had left him feeling refreshed and sober. Examining the campsite he saw that some centaurs had joined the little merry group and were in the process of cooking and drinking with the others, all types of joy and frivolity going on.

Grunting in dissatisfaction he made his way towards the trunk of a large tree obscured by shadows at the edge of the clearing, intending to sit and smoke his pipe in peace when he froze – his eyes fixed on the new wagon that sat across the fire near a group of tents.

He would recognise that anywhere. It meant that she was here, and his eyes scanned the group quickly and almost frantically. Spotting her stood at the edge of the group next to her horse he tried quickly to smooth his tangled hair down to look slightly more presentable before he sauntered over to her side.

“Hello there Wildflower” he said before clearing his throat. It had been a long time since he had seen her, and then he was little more than a young boy. She still looked the same as always to him, like she hadn’t aged a day. He slipped his pipe into his pocket, the habit completely forgotten as he gazed into her eyes like a smitten kitten, practically purring at the sight of her. ‘Will she even remember me?’ he thought to himself, his heart pounding in his chest the whole time.

“Hello there Willow” he said to the strong horse as he rubbed the his snout lightly, wishing he had some treat he could give him, he waited holding his breath for Wildflower to reply.

Sparrot

Sparrot gazed down at the land below him as he soared high in the sky, floating on the breeze and eddies as he eyed the small figures below him. From this far they looked like tiny tiny ants, which gave the bird the desire to squish them – but he knew that really they were far bigger than he was and as such would need to leave the squishing to his love.

‘Where, oh where, do you go’ he thought to himself idly as he circled above the group. Sparrot hated the Jairo mountains, they were cold barren and filed with little of interest, and he couldn’t understand what either his love or this group of people would be looking for here. But as always his love commanded and he obeyed, he would wait and watch these fools to see if they discovered whatever ruin it was his love had told him about, whatever ruin it was that contained the tombs of long dead kings of a once unified Emanseria. Sparrot cackled to himself as he flew, gleefully thinking about how happy his love would be when he succeeded at this ‘key stage’ of his plan.

Kirin allowed the gypsy woman to help her up onto the small wagon. She huddled into the most out-of-the-way corner, aware that she was now an extra burden. Luckily the vanner horse didn't seem to mind. Except for giving Fritz a nod of acknowledgement she rode along with them in silence, hugging her knees to her chest. When they finally rolled up to the edge of a camp, she looked up.

"Does that hurt?. I mean, your wings look hurt, are you okay?" She jumped slightly, then glanced down over her shoulder, seeming to notice the damage for the first time.

"Oh… no it's just…" she giggled a little at the boy's concern. Even as she did so the crumpled wings began to straighten themselves out. They shone a soft crystal blue color and stretched out to their full size. The shape was reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, but their construction was gauzy, like lace. They even sparkled a bit when the light caught them. The color matched that of her eyes. "It doesn't hurt," she explained to Fritz, "It's more just for show." She twirled to show him and they fluttered whimsically around her shoulders.

The moment was cut short though with Ada and Duplo's alarm. Kirin shrunk back into the wagon as the thundering of hooves drowned out all other sounds, Fritz joined her shortly and they huddled fearfully. "Centaurs!" Fritz gasped excitedly, peeking out to see what was going on. Ada soon gave them the all clear, seeming suddenly cheerful. Fritz was eager to go out and see, but the fae girl hung back, only gathering the courage to step out at Fritz's urging. He kindly helped her off the wagon, though she was perfectly capable of getting down herself, it was reassuring that the boy was looking out for her. She stuck close to him as he began to explore.

“I’ve never met a centaur before,” said Fritz. Kirin shook her head, she'd never met one either, but then he added. “I’m from a very sheltered place and actually before I met you I hadn’t met a fae before either… well apart from one I think, but I’m not so sure I’d like to meet him again.”

"Well," a familiar voice called out indignantly, "That's just hurtful. Really Fritz, after all we've been through?" Kirin turned to find the source of the voice. A devilish-looking fae man stood not far off from them, his arm around a pretty red-haired gypsy girl. Her first thought was that, while his appearance was young, he seemed much older than he looked. His skin was a cool gray-greenish tone, and his hair looked like a wild mat of grass and leaves. Two little gold horns sprouted from his hairline, accentuating luminous amber eyes. His thin lips were curled into a mischievous smile. He leaned over and whispered something into the gypsy girl's ear and she laughed and blushed. Plucking a daisy that seemed to be growing out of his scalp, the imp handed it to her and she skipped away to join her friends across the camp who were fawning over the centaurs.

"Who's this?" the imp darted over to Kirin, poking his finger in her face much as he had probed Fritz not so long ago. "Your girlfriend? She's much too pretty for you." He rolled his eyes back to Fritz. "I won't keep you from enjoying the festivities. Welcome to Emansaria, human." He laughed jovially and cartwheeled away before either of them could formulate a response.

Fritz turned and headed toward Ada and the rabbit-girl. Kirin hurried to keep up with him, a look of confusion on her innocent face. "Who was that?" she wondered, "Is he the one you were talking about?" She stopped when they reached the others, and was momentarily distracted by the centaurs. They looked so wild, more brutish than the folks she was used to, but not unkind. She couldn't understand what they said though, and was curious about the old woman translating. She sounded foreign too.
Aergar

Aergar Wald chuckled to himself. Certainly Fritz was not happy to see him. As he strode through the camp he passed a group of gypsy girls who giggled and shrieked when he looked their way. The imp might have been infamous to causing trouble, but more often than not he liked to invite himself to these gypsy camps, for these folks found any reason to celebrate, and they welcomed anyone who contributed to the festivities. Speaking of which…

As everyone began to build the bonfire and the ale began to be rolled out, a small boy ran up to Aergar and placed a bow and violin in his hands. He thanked the child and lifted the instrument up, drawing the horsehair strands of the bow across the worn steel strings, producing a rich, eerie note. The girls chattered excitedly, and he glanced over at them with a wink. At least two of them swooned. Without missing a beat, the imp began to play a slow, haunting tune. All those near him fell silent to listen. He took long slow steps across the camp, many of the smaller children following at his heels. As he approached the center of events, the large fire where dinner was beginning to be cooked, the tune sped up and so did his footsteps. Soon he was running pellmell through the camp followed by shouts and whoops.

Without breaking melody or stride he leapt up unto the air to alight on the supporting pole of the nearest tent, standing on his toes with perfect balance. A handful of gypsies began to clap their hands and stomp in time to the rhythm. Aergar's fingers flew over the neck of the violin, the bow drawing out a lively tune. People started to dance and he grinned. The soulful voice of the violin stirring up their feet as well as their spirits. The song was not known by anyone, but listening to it made one think of the stars and the wind and autumn. It was happy with brief moments of sobriety with an overall sassy attitude. One might say that the music seemed to fit Aergar quite well.

By the time he ceased playing, the meal had been cooked. The imp sprang from the tentpole in an impressive display of acrobatics and handed the instrument off to the person nearest him. In turn he was handed a mug of ale, and downed half the flagon in a single gulp. Sprinting over to one of the female centaurs, he gave her his sweetest face and murmured something inaudible to anyone else. She scowled and slapped him hard across the face. He reeled away, accompanied by laughter and cat-calls from the onlookers. Unfazed, he turned his nose up at the mare and stalked off. The red-haired girl from before ran up to him and clung to his arm, and he spun her around playfully in a little jig. Other musicians had brought out their instruments by now, carrying on a cheerful tune.

Aergar made his way over to Ada and company, affording them a sweeping bow, his mug held outstretched. "Ah what a lovely evening. Although I didn't expect you to turn up here, Lady Lovelace."

Ada
"We'll stop and rest in Haneul before making our way to Eira, by that time I'll know what Frit-" "Hello there wildflower" Ada looked up, the voice was familiar and so was that name. Wildflower. She twisted the word around her tongue, where did it come from? "Hello there Willow" The large horse snorted and butted the man approvingly. Remembering the man behind her Ada turned and took in the appearance of the man behind her. His brown shaggy hair was crumpled in some areas - squashed with sleep. And his sharp jawline was covered in stubble. He was attractive, with long tick eyelashes and golden eyes. Ada stared at him, trying to connect the mental points. His high cheekbones were kind of distracting. No matter which part of her memory she scoured, she just could not recognise him. A young boy covered in mud, asleep under the tree with the same golden eyes hovered in her mind for a bit, but that boy was not a gypsy, he belonged to a town on the shore, a rich farmland with foreign slaves.

Duplo
Duplo patiently watched Ada and the chestnut haired man, awaiting Ada's attention again. Soon she got bored and skulked off and sulkily grabbed Willow's grooming brushes and got to work. Ferociously scrubbing out all the dirt in his fur and massaging his big muscles to help him relax. She had just finished his belly and was picking blackjacks out his tail when a boy with gold horns began playing the violin, dancing all over the place. He sprang from tent to tent and the thick-headed gypsy girls squealed. Duplo watched him, thinking him as another trickster seeking for attention. Then a centaur slapped him and he reeled back. Good. Duplo smirked to herself. Then she accidentally knocked her porcelain ear against Willow. She rubbed where she bumped him, making sure the porcelain was not scratched or cracked.

He pranced over to Ada as she was talking to the other man and tried to make conversation. Duplo did not like the looks of this trouble maker.

Fritz

"Well," a familiar voice called out indignantly, "That's just hurtful. Really Fritz, after all we've been through?"

Aergar Wald, thought Fritz to himself. The imp had been his greeting to this world, and it seemed that he wasn’t going to be as rid of him as he had assumed. A few moments later he was poking at Kirin, asking who she was and causing Fritz to blush somewhat as he asked if she was his girlfriend. Before he could say or do anything he had cartwheeled away, but not before dropping that he knew what Fritz was – human. Fritz remembered what Ada had told him about being human in this place, and so he began to worry somewhat. Just how dangerous was this Aergar Wald, he wondered – or was he as mostly harmless as he appeared to be.

Suddenly Kirin spoke, bringing his thoughts back to her, asking about who the mischievous imp was. He watched Aergar from across the camp for a few moments before he nodded and replied “Yes that’s him - Aergar Wald, lord of the trees and the vines and the flowers, the boars and the bears and the little marching ants. Or at least that’s what he said, though he also claimed to be a god so I’m not so sure at the moment.”

Fritz smirked as he remembered their meeting and how it had all gone, deciding not to elaborate further as he watched the imp began to play the violin before drawing further attention to himself and adding to the lively atmosphere. Fritz decided he should enjoy himself somewhat, after all he was in a strange and exciting place surrounded by strange and exciting people, he also wanted to learn more about Kirin and made a note to ask her more about herself as soon as he could in the evening.

Making his way to Ada he saw that she was in conversation with another gypsie and decided it could wait. He turned instead to Duplo, the strange dainty rabbit headed woman who was now watching Aergar with what he assumed must be interest or suspicion – it was hard to tell after all with the mask.

“Hey Duplo” he blurted out somewhat awkwardly “I was just wondering… I mean if you didn’t mind me asking that is, how was it that you met Ada? I mean I’m just curious and I thought since we are going to be travelling together and all, why is it you’re traveling with her?”

He wasn’t sure what to expect, but his curiosity of course was getting the better of him as it often did. He resisted the urge to ask outright about the mask, though his stares may as well have done that for him.

Fimion

He watched her face closely as she examined his features, her eyes searching his face as he could see her search her memories, he did nothing but smile softly as she did so, waiting to see if she recognised him at all. After a few moments he saw a flicker of recognition in her dark almost feline eyes and he grinned wider still before he slowly nodded.

“Not so small anymore am I?” he asked her jokingly, but before he could continue the mischievous forest imp who frequented their camp on occasion, his name eluded Fimon, approached before bowing and speaking with Ada.

"Ah what a lovely evening. Although I didn't expect you to turn up here, Lady Lovelace."

‘Lady Lovelace’ he thought to himself, ‘Is that her name?’ he wondered, curious about how they may know each other. He glanced around the group of her companions curiously, of course there was Willow, but he already knew her. There was a short way away a young odd looking boy, very odd looking indeed he decided staring at the strange glass and wire things he was wearing on his face – he was being followed by a young fae girl, who other than looking a little worse for wear was the most normal looking amongst them. The boy was talking to the rabbit headed woman who had come to the camp first, not that he had paid any attention then – though he would have if he’d of known who was to follow.

‘Strange’, he thought to himself turning his eyes back to Wildflower fondly. The last thing he was going to do was question her at this point or demand her attention. So with little more than a nod of recognition to the imp he waited, hoping that she would not be as infatuated with him as the other girls generally were – though for once this would be a time when he would fight for a woman’s attention if he needed to.

"Ah what a lovely evening. Although I didn't expect you to turn up here, Lady Lovelace." Ada's eyes narrowed as she faced the troublesome imp. "Aegar, you're being a nuisance again I see." She was glad to encounter the imp again, she needed to keep tabs on him or he would get far too big for his boots like that time he tried to make an elvish community worship him when he helped with the summer harvest's failing plants. She noticed a familiar glint in his eye, he was not talking to her for any other reason than to get something out of her, what she did not know.

The brown haired man frowned and looked at Aegar with a disapproving eye, this made Duplo smirk and Ada noticed him sizing himself up to Aegar. The boy stood tall and puffed out his chest, with his arms firmly clenched at his sides.

Duplo paused in her grooming and observed Ada and the two males, wondering and kind of admiring Ada. She had such a deep history. Then the flat faced boy came over “Hey Duplo. I was just wondering… I mean if you didn’t mind me asking that is, how was it that you met Ada? I mean I’m just curious and I thought since we are going to be travelling together and all, why is it you’re travelling with her?”

She looked at this boy with his odd monocles and his ugly clothes. He had leaves in his hair and if she had lips, they would be drawn back in a disgusted grimace. She seriously considered ignoring this arrogant child but a little voice in the back of her mind said she's regret that. "Ada came across me in a shop and took me in as an apprentice, as she said" she snapped. Giving as little as she could while still answering his question "And why are you here." She commented more than asked but waited for an answer none the less.

Willow on the other hand watched Ada and her encounter. She laughed at something the imp said, throwing her head back and flashing her teeth. The boy pulled his lips tight in disapproval while rabbit-girl bickered with the new two-legged creature. He flicked his ears to and fro picking up small bits of conversation. One of the centaurs began to sing in the equine language. A beautiful song about rolling hills and lush forests, with sweet water, joyful mares, energetic foals, songbirds in the trees and elves dancing in the rain. The song turned dark as winter came and chased all the animals into the warm cabins of the elves with fires, and chestnuts and sleeping rabbits. Indifferent and content to enjoy the company of his companions he swished his tail and tore up grass for another mouthful.

"A god?" she echoed Fritz. Clearly the term carried more weight in her mind. The gods of Emanseria were not much more than legends, but legends rooted in truth. They were ancient creatures that had faded from the earth as the Fae and the gypsies had spread across the land. Some said they still existed, and were merely asleep. Eons ago they were the protectors of Emanseria, back when demons and pestilence terrorized the primitive cultures. Having driven the foul beasts from the world, they were no longer needed, and so quietly went away. There were always stories, elves always claimed to be able to feel the presence of the weather gods, or the river gods, as they slumbered. Kirin had never heard a first or even second-hand account of someone actually encountering one though.

She watched Aergar make his way through the camp. He'd gotten a violin from somewhere and now children were following him toward the bonfire as he began to play. He didn't look like a god to her, not the gargantuan beings whose footsteps shook the ground. He was small in comparison, and skinny, and no doubt he was a strange fae and she couldn't say with one-hundred-percent certainty that he wasn't what he claimed to be, but to be honest the odds were better that he was a devil impersonating a god. Most likely though, he was only another fae.

She tagged behind Fritz. Ada was occupied with someone when they reached her, to Fritz turned to the rabbit woman instead. Duplo? She was another curious creature, and though they were very different there was something about her that reminded Kirin of Fritz. Duplo seemed impatient with him, giving him a short answer that was nothing he apparently didn't already know. Kirin wondered if she was always like this, or if she just didn't like Fritz in particular. Only one way to find out. She stepped up next to Duplo and smiled sweetly. "I'm sorry we haven't properly met," she curtsied, flaring the hem of her tattered skirt, "I'm Kirin Cobb, from Eira, and you're Duplo right? That's such a pretty name, I've never heard it before."
Aergar

The imp mimed a knife to the chest. "You've struck me deeply, my dear. I may need some assistance pulling this spike of derision from my heart. Is that any way to greet an old friend?" His eyes skipped over to the gypsy man whom he had interrupted. "I bet she didn't say such things to you there." In truth he was hardly a friend to her, though he'd never really been an enemy either. He personally had nothing against Ada or her companions, such grudges were below him. She did fascinate him though, almost as much as that old ghost did, though Ada did have a habit of ruining his fun she had bribed him on a handful of occasions. One of those being the last time Phrenesis seemed to disappear, though neither the spirit nor his pet raven knew anything of the affair. It was probably better that way, for everyone.

He had been of help to her on a couple of times as well, though she never really thanked him properly, always something about how he only did nice things if he were to get something out of it, to which he replied that everyone did that whether they admitted to it or not and he was simply being honest about it. "When have I ever wronged you in any way, Lovelace? Hm? You know yourself I've always been more help to you than harm, so I truly cannot fathom your reason for being so awfully rude. That's unbecoming of a lady of your status. Not even a 'hello Aergar', 'how's the forest these days Aergar', 'which way to the crossroads' or 'good to see your cheerful face again Aergar'?" He pouted and gave her a wide-eyed puppy dog look, not a bad one at that. "I've never asked anything of you, you know." That was more or less true in the sense that Aergar never just asked for something he wanted, only suggested (sometimes with blatant obviousness) what he wanted.

He made an exasperated gesture. "Really with an attitude like that it's no wonder your only friend is a rabbit."

Phrenesis

A cold breeze rushed through the once bustling streets of Jabari, the usually crowded market square was empty aside from a few huddled figures rushing one way or another. Ever since the imprisonment of Earl Desjardins tensions had risen and events had begun to spiral wildly out of hand. The Elvish and Fae communities were at each other’s throats, several ‘incidents’ serving to add fuel to the volatile situation. The Earl and his cook were imprisoned within dungeons below the city barracks, his wife the Lady Desjardins was furious with the Fae community and had orchestrated a boycott of all Fae goods and services, the ramifications of which would soon have an effect on not only the city but the other numerous cities and towns which relied on the trade goods of Jabari to survive and flourish. There had also been several assaults on both elf and fae alike, each group blaming the other for the provocations.

A slim clocked figure made her way through the baron streets, a smug grin covering her features which were hidden in shadows. Making her way directly to the largest and grandest of the elvish manors that dominated the Starlight district she wasted little time on pounding on the heavy oak door that belonged to Lady Desjardins before she removed the hood that covered her features. Several moments later the door opened a crack and a bleary pair of eyes gazed out at her suspiciously before opening slightly wider, revealing an elvish butler who had obviously been dozing.

He tried several times to dismiss her, but the woman’s pleading wouldn’t cease. As soon as she mentioned that it was about the Earl and the poisoning he immediately ushered her inside before seating her in a lavish room filled with all kinds of luxuries, instructing her to wait whilst he fetched Lady Desjardins. As she waited she glanced around, unimpressed at the display of wealth, resisting the urge to steal or break some kind of valuable object.

Several minutes later footsteps approached and Lady Desjardins entered the room, her face was gaunt and tired and showed that she too was receiving a lack of sleep, however her graceful and beautiful features were hardly marred.

“You said you have news regarding what has happened to my husband?” she asked flatly, her eyes showing how desperate she was for any news. Phrenesis couldn’t help but think how easy this all was as he manipulated the events around him with such ease.

The woman nodded slowly before confessing passionately to Lady Desjardins about how she worked in the bakery in Tariq where the Earl had ordered his food from, she continued to confess through carefully orchestrated tears how a rather cruel and brutal fae from Eadric had come to the bakery and forced them to add something to the goods they sent to the earl, threatening her life if her father ever spoke of it or told anyone of the Fae’s involvement. She finished her teary confession rather convincingly by telling the Lady how she couldn’t keep it to herself any longer knowing that the Earl had been imprisoned un-justly, even if it meant risking her own life.

Lady Desjardins face darkened and anger played across her delicate features. Standing suddenly she barked to the elvish butler “Wake my household guard. All of them. We are going to free my husband and right this injustice immediately. Also send a rider to our king, I will compose a letter which must reach him as soon as possible.”

Lady Desjardins turned back to the girl before taking her hands in her own and saying “Thank you, I know how difficult it must have been for you to tell me this. Stay here as long as you need, Lauranthil here will see to any needs you have. You will be rewarded for your loyalty”. Lady Desjardins gave her hand a comforting squeeze before she stood and made her way brusquely out of the room.

Several minutes later Phrenesis was stood in a guest room, watching through a window as several guardsmen led by Lady Desjardins mounted horses and rode out into the streets, heading directly towards the city barracks. Grinning widely she sat on the bed before reaching into the cloak that she wore before pulling out a small thin vile of a deep coloured yellow liquid. Giggling to herself she pulled free the little stopper and knocked the liquid back in one gulp before she lay back in the bed. If this body needed sleep it would get sleep, the concoction she had just consumed being enough to put her into a deep slumber for about twelve hours. As long as he returned to the body before then there would be no problems, and he knew exactly how to pass the time. She continued to giggle as the feelings of sleep soon overtook her, and as soon as her eyes shut Phrenesis forced himself to leave her body, the familiar and unpleasant feeling of such a separation gripping him as he returned once more to his free-flowing natural form, now airborne and invisible to the naked eye as his consciousness floated out into the corridor and made its way down the grand staircase searching for Lauranthil the butler.

Lauranthil

The fog lifted from Lauranthil’s mind as suddenly as it had appeared, the elf standing confused and dazed for a moment as his surroundings came into focus. He was stood in what appeared to be a rather cold pantry of some kinds, shelves of numerous foodstuffs surrounding him. Looking down he jumped as he saw that his hands and clothes were covered in what looked to be a generous coating of blood, panicking as he tried to wipe his hands on what little clean area still remained of his coat.

Suddenly he heard a crashing noise from somewhere beyond the doorway, confused and somewhat scared he reached for the handle of the doorway before opening it slightly as the crashing noise came again. He gasped in horror at the sight before him, the room before him was obviously some kind of kitchen, however it was covered in streaks and pools of blood, the bodies of several fae laying where they had obviously fallen with deep cuts and gash wounds covering their bodies. The crashing noise sounded again before at the opposite side of the room several city guardsmen broke into the room brandishing swords, several of them clearly disgusted by what they saw as they gazed at Lauranthil accusingly.

The elf suddenly realised what the situation looked like as he glanced down and saw a knife at his feet that was completely covered in gore and laying in a pool of blood. Before he could react the guards had swarmed forwards, each of them shouting at him to give himself up and stay where he was. His protests of innocence were ignored as one of them tackled him before dragging him kicking and screaming through the generous layer of blood out through the house to the front where a young fae girl was waiting with a small crowd behind her.

“Is this him?” one of the guards asked pointing to Lauranthil as the others clapped his arms in a sturdy set of manacles. The girl nodded quickly with tears streaming down her face before she managed to blurt a word of confirmation.

The guard shook his head, clearly disgusted as he made his way to Lauranthil with a small black sack before he aggressively shoved it onto his head and pulled a drawstring to keep it tight around his neck. Spitting on the ground the guard remarked “You’ll hang for this you piece of filth. Murdering the fae ambassador and his family of all people at a time like this.”

The other guards nodded in agreement, a few of them agreeing with little other than angry curses and one even going as far as to mumble something about if he even makes it to the noose alive.

In the city itself word was spreading quickly, people gathered in the shadows and exchanged hushed whispers. Most couldn’t believe what they were hearing, that the Lady Desjardins had demanded the release of her husband threatening to take him by force, whilst her butler had been apprehended literally red handed murdering practically the entire staff of the fae embassy. As tensions continued to rise reports of angry mobs in the streets became more and more common, news of a murder here or there coming in as both elves and fae blamed each other for the events, the situation now spinning rapidly out of control as the elven guard was scrambled to keep order on the streets – it would not be long before word spread to the fae cities nearby to Jabari. Phrenesis watched from above, hidden from view as his plan continued to click neatly into place.

Phrenesis

Once the excitement died down he floated towards the city barracks, as soon as he spotting a living creature he veered towards it, intent on possessing it and resuming a physical form as quickly as possible. The unlucky creature was a mangy grey cat, the creature reminding him oh so fondly of Ada somewhat as he took control of it. If the feline could have chuckled it would have, but instead it simply hacked a hairball out. As he began to slink across the rooftops Phrenesis couldn’t help but note what bad condition the cat was in, and so concentrated somewhat his abilities on healing its small body – not for any sense of sympathy, but rather so that his ‘vessel’ was in as good condition as it could be.

As the feline reached the city barracks he perched on top of a wall, watching the chaos unfold before him. It seemed that an angry mod had quickly assembled and had forced the Lady Desjardins back inside with her husband the Earl, he now heard shouts of treachery and anger – some assuming that she had sent her butler to do her dirty work, others shouting about their innocence. Numerous small scuffles were breaking out, the only guards to be seen where the household guard of house Desjardins – firmly keeping back any who tried to advance into the barracks.

The cat suddenly felt the fog lifting from its mind as Phrenesis left it’s body, his presence floating down towards the guards as he quickly detected one that had consumed his breath – possessing the man easily. A dark expression covered his face as Phrenesis pulled his sword from its scabbard, darkness glinting in his eyes.

“For House Desjardins and the elven kingdom!” he shouted at the top of his lungs before he lunged forwards blade first into the crowd that was comprised primarily of fae merchants and several nobles – managing to decapitate one and stab another through the chest before the crowd descended upon him and began to grab, punch, kick, stab as well as many other painful things. Leaving the body again Phrenesis floated upwards and gazed downwards, wishing it was possible somehow to freeze what he was seeing in some kind of eternal picture and send it to Aergar. Pure sweet chaos.

As he returned to the cat which had barely moved from where he left it he watched as the crowds swarmed the household guard, the sheer volume of bodies being more then they could resist as some of them tried to fight back and others were simply torn apart. Phrenesis watched so fondly as the mob swarmed into the barracks, the sounds of death and combat echoing out as they obviously encountered whatever members of the city guard were still inside. Soon the bodies of both the Earl and Lady Desjardins were dragged into the streets, as soon as they were the malevolent spirit once more left its feline vessel and occupied the nearest week-willed rioter who was holding a lit torch before he turned and strode into the barracks. Moments later black smoke began to billow from the building and flames began to creep from each opening turning the scene into that of utter destruction and death.

As the cat turned to flee into the night it once more felt the smothering presences take control of its mind, and it turned and made its way triumphantly back towards the now empty mansion sitting in the what he assumed would soon be the very violent starlight district.

Fritz

Duplo snapped a response at him before she asked him why he was here, it seemed rhetorical but he could tell she was making a point. He had no idea why he was here, if indeed he was here for any reason at all.

Kirin introduced herself to Duplo politely, even curtsying as she did so. Fritz grinned and waited to see how she would react – after all Duplo seemed to be a bit short from what he had experienced. He mulled over her words – came across her in a shop, and wondered what exactly that meant, but decided against asking further right now.

He turned his attention to Aergar the forest Imp and watched him closely. It seemed he knew Ada to some degree, or at least they had run into each other several times in the past. He closely watched their conversation, as at the moment the Imp was trying to convince her that he wasn’t so bad and was talking about their past times together, something Fritz was keep to learn about if he could.

Laakari

Eira was in an uproar. Word had reached the city of a supposed uprising in Jabari, just rumors, but serious rumors. So serious in fact that the fae had begun assembling the Eirian army in preparation for retaliation. Several elf traders had already been arrested on the accusation of being spies or covert agents. The population was in a state of unrest and unease. Nobody trusted the elves anymore, even Laakari was treated with suspicion and for his own sake he had avoided the city ever since word of a war between elves and fae had been uttered. He didn't not for certain if these events may really lead to a war. It did not make sense that the elves, who had always been a peaceful and pacifist race, would orchestrate these unprovoked attacks. The whole affair seemed very unnatural to him, and he wanted to go to Jabari to find out for himself what was going on, but he couldn't abandon Novell and neither could he take her along on such a dangerous mission.

In fact, there was much about it that he had not told her yet, since it was all rumor to him as well. That is, until today. Laakari was tending to the greenhouse late one morning when an insistent knock came at his door. Novell jumped up hurriedly to answer it, hoping one of Eira's children had come to play with her. None had been allowed to leave their homes without their parents as of late and the girl had been very lonely. Instead she opened the door to find a figure doubled over in agony, clinging to the doorpost in order to remain on his feet. He was an elf, long white hair dirty and tangled, the white wolfskin draped around his shoulders--his only clothing--was grimy and stained with old and new blood. He was wounded, though the gashes were old and already scabbed over. A particularly long cut across his ribs had reopened however, accounting for the bright red stains on the white fur. He was covered in bruises and his face looked badly beaten. All in all, he was in very poor shape indeed, and encountering all this at once frightened Novell so that she screamed and ran to Laakari.

The white elf fell through the open doorway, too exhausted to stand anymore. Laakari hurried to see what was the matter. Novell hid behind him, covering her eyes. "Bromelian!" he exclaimed, "How the devil did you get here, what happened?" Obviously the poor man was in no state to answer any of these queries. Thinking quickly, he turned to the little girl. "Novell, fetch the Lembari solution, clean cloths, and fresh bandages." She hesitated, still shaken by what had just happened. "Now." The strict command snapped her out of her daze and she quickly ran off to do as he said. Laakari helped the elf named Bromelian to lie on his back. The elf moaned pitifully. A quick examination revealed that though he was suffering from multiple wounds his life was not currently in danger, unless he happened to catch infection. Elf immunity was extremely high, so while this was not likely to happen Laakari decided that taking the necessary preventative cautions would do no harm. Fortunately the kettle was on, and Laakari set about pouring the boiling water into a basin, and using one of the clean rags Novell brought him began to clean the white elf's wounds.

It took some time to clean and dress each abrasion, and Laakari found it necessary to stitch up the cut across his ribs. He applied the Lembari, a thick green paste, generously before bandaging it up. Now that the excess blood had been washed away he didn't look nearly as frightening, only weak and pale. Laakari brewed a strong herbal tea and made him drink all of it before attempting to speak. He put the wolf skin in a large basin of soapy water to soak, and wrapped a soft linen blanket around Bromelian's naked body, seating him in a chair near the hearth. Though it was not cold the white elf shivered, promoting Laakari to bring him a second blanket, which he refused.

"I am fine," he murmured tiredly, resting his face in his hands. By this time Novell had gotten her courage back and came closer to get a better look at him. The only elf she'd ever met was Laakari, and then he was only half elf. The two were very different, almost opposites. Laakari with his charcoal skin and ebony hair made Bromelian appear very white indeed. Not only was his hair white but his skin was pale, the color of ash. There were other differences too. Bromelian's ears were longer and his face more angled, with slanted eyes, straight nose, and a thin line for a mouth. Unlike Laakari who always tied his hair back, or held it back with a bandana, Bromelian's hair fell freely around his face, often obscuring his features though it didn't seem to bother him.

He gripped the tea cup with long white fingers and rocked slightly back and forth. He drew his feet up onto the chair and sat in a crouched position, it gave him a feral animal look. "I owe you my life, Laakari," he whispered, but not in a thankful way, sort of derisively, as if he didn't like the thought of being indebted to someone else.

"Think nothing of it," the darker elf said, dismissing it with a wave of his hand, "You are my cousin after all, it's no good to charge a family member."

Bromelian snorted derisively, "We are hardly related." When Laakari asked him again what had happened he let out a great sight and recounted the tale to them. "I was passing through Tariq on my way to Haneul. Overnight word reached us of the bloody murder of the fae ambassador in Jabari, his whole family save the youngest daughter, who was witness to the crime. And who did they accuse? None other than an elf, some high-and-mighty's butler who was apparently involved in a plot to exterminate the fae in the city. And that's not all. Riots broke out in the streets, they got violent… many died by the sword and an entire district was burned by fire. This was the first I had heard of any unrest, but apparently it is somehow related to some supposed poisoning of some important nobodies. Of course everyone in Tariq was outraged and a mob set out to eradicate every elf in the city. They dragged me out of my bed in the middle of the night and beat me senseless, then tied me to a lashing post out in the street to be jeered at. I managed to escape with the aid of a friend, though she was not so lucky as I was…" he paused for a moment as the image of the she-elf being crushed beneath the angry feet of several dozen fae returned to him. Literally crushed.

"I took the high road along the Dorian Cliffs but misjudged my footings and fell into the lake. I thought I would die but a fisherman saw me floundering and offered to let me into his boat. He took me to the far shore and from there I knew not where to go. Then I remembered you lived outside of Eira, so here I am." He finished his story, placing the empty teacup on the floor. He seemed to notice Novell for the first time and frowned. "I do not remember you having children. Has it been so long since we have seen each other?"

Laakari shook his head. "Novell is my apprentice. She is young but very gifted."

"Hmm." Bromelian never understood the concept of alchemy or the natural sciences. The elves relied on their magic for such things, and he saw this as Laakari's way of trying to make up for the fact that he could not use magic.

Laakari asked him several more questions surrounding the circumstances of the other elf's ordeal. When he could learn nothing else he excused himself, and left Bromelian to rest. While Novell started preparing a light meal for them, he went to his writing desk and took up the quill. He thought carefully about his words before inscribing them on a small, thin piece of paper. He wrote this in old runes that very few people could read today, the message roughly translated to:

Trouble in Jabari is spreading,
fae and elves are no longer
friends. The cause is unknown
but I fear an old enemy. I must
know what you know of the
prophecy. Make haste.
~L.M.

He blew on the delicate parchment to dry the ink, then carefully rolled and slid it into a small carrying tube. Stepping out the back door he whistled a shrill note four times. Within minutes a sleek raven flapped into sight and alit on his outstretched arm. "Listen carefully, Luka." The bird cocked its head at the sound of its name. It looked like and ordinary raven save for the ring to royal blue feathers around its neck. Laakari securely fastened the message to its leg. "You must find Ada Lovelace, she must get this letter as soon as possible. It is very important. Understand?" The raven clicked its beak twice, stretching out its wings. Laakari tossed it into the air and watched it circle twice before turning its course to the west. Soon the messenger was out of sight. Laakari only prayed that it would arrive safely.
