If you like more shounen-oriented anime I suggest watching/reading Berserk (lots of NSFW stuff and heavy violence though, warning you now), Evangelion, or One Piece if you want some more stuff for when you're all caught up on SNK. As far as shoujo with a little action I'll always fondly remember Revolutionary Girl Utena, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Card Captor Sakura. My name suggestions would have to be Death Note, Clannad & Fate Zero.
Log Horizon, Madoka Magica and Code Geass are also good choices though.

Not as an anime.
And it also barely does the show or manga any justice.
Do yourself a big favor and go watch the anime or read the Magma.
It does the series far better justice, partly because it gives it more time to flesh people out, explain the plot and explain the complicated plans at work.

A couple of my friends made me watch it with them and I didn't think I was going to like it and then by the end of the first episode I was in tears. Can't wait for season 2.

No.

The anime/manga is vastly superior. The manga was awesome and the anime actually follows it really closely, serving as a fantastic adaptation. The movie's kind of a shit adaptation.

Go read the manga or watch the anime.

Blegh. I'd rather watch/read Higurashi or whatever it's called. All the little arcs are decently good, it feels almost sort of like Ito's stuff. (A little less psychological horror and more just straight-up gore, though.)

I grew up around Japanese live action, albeit dubbed.

Mainly because I grew up in Thailand and all Thailand original TV shows are shit, so they ported Japanese live action shows.

I watched Attack on Titan until the main guy did the “thing”, and then stopped watching. I don’t know why, you’d think I’d be more interested after that.
