I don't think being given a list of names is going to change NSA's mind about anything. They probably have most of those names profiled already, give 'em a better offer.

I don't think that a list of names will change anything either. I do, however. think that if enough people personally contact their legislators a message will be sent about what we'd like to see in the government. I know it's not necessarily true anymore, but I'd like to think that there's still some hint of "for the people, by the people" left in our government systems.

"By the people" isn't something that NSA seems interested in adopting. I'm not one of those people that think getting involved in politics is moot, but a petition against a government surveillance organization is just silly. The best it could possibly do is send the message that people on the internet don't like being watched, and that message has already been delivered.

I think the "people power" concept is more aimed at the President and such who are democratically elected. It's basically saying change this or lose our vote; unfortunately for the movement most people seem either a) unwilling to join or b) unwilling to follow through and vote against said president; generally because the other option is an idiot. So really the only signatures/names that would even count would be those of US citizens and it'd have to be a large amount to actually achieve anything.

I'm enjoying two people not from her country trying to mansplain why it's dumb and we should roll over and never get involved with our legislators.

The counter-movement needs to be in tangible things. Don't like being surveiled? Delete your facebook. Close your GMail, switch to a paid service. Switch away from the iPhone. You can't fight this with feelings. Not that you shouldn't try -- symbolism is nice. It just isn't productive. Patriots swing from a tree on a rope -- those are the kind of stakes that get things done.

Like this for example is method.
