"The winner is Xi Jones," Kim's voice declared over the speakers. "Press Dalton, please head to the stage. I'll be there shortly to duel you. Aislin MacBeth, would you be kind enough to take over up here since you lost your duel?"

"Finally," Press sighed as he got off the seat he was sitting on and placed his deck into his Duel Disk. The Duel Disk then turned on, showing the boot-up screen and finally was ready for use. He calmly walked over to his position on the stage, then waited for Kim to arrive.
"Looks like the Noble Knights lost this Duel," Freya commented to Michelle, who was busy adding the final touches to her deck. "Sorry to hear that," Michelle said as she shuffled her deck and placed it into her Duel Disk, then returned her full attention to the stage.

The duel had just finished. All in all, it was quite unremarkable, except for Akira's outstanding incompetence in handling her deck. With those premises, it was clear she would've lost. A pity, as Jones looked much more difficult to beat.
But after all, how could he properly test his deck against an enemy that didn't even fight back?

Waiting for the President to step on the arena, he started twiddling his fingers, slumping in his chair.

Kim stepped up on stage. This was it; her chance to finally duel instead of just sitting back commenting on who won and who lost. Knowing her rotten luck, she'd probably just lose, but that didn't mean she was about to just surrending from the get-go because of a supposed family curse or something stupid like that. No; Kim was determined to win. Even if she kind of doubted it possible.

"Good luck," Kim said, facing her opponent who stood across the stage from her.

Press said nothing, but instead adjusted his glasses slightly while still focusing on his opponent.

"Let's see...the computer decided Kim will go first," Aislin's voice said over the speakers. "D...DUEL!"

Here goes nothing. Kim drew her five cards...and looked in utter disbelief. One monster. Two spells. Two traps. Only the monster being playable at present. Well, nothing else to do then. "I set one monster face down, and end my turn!"

Press had drawn his five cards, and now drew his next card. Ancient Gear Golem. His hand couldn't be any better. He could OTK her right now. "I play the Spell Card: Power Bond. By using my Ancient Gear Golem, Ancient Gear Beast, and Ancient Gear Soldier, I can Summon my Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem." The three fusion materials he had called out appeared on the field, only to fade away and have a giant centaur-like monster take their place, its attack registering as 4400.

"Due to the effect of Power Bond, my Golem's attack is doubled," Press explained as its 4400 rose up to 8800. "Furthermore, I activate the Spell Card: Limiter Removal. This doubles my Golem's attack again." Golem's attack then rose all the way up to 17600. Press adjusted his glasses again, then explained, "When Golem attacks a monster in defense position, it can deal piercing battle damage." Press sighed, then commanded, "Battle Phase. Golem, attack her face-down monster." Golem roared as it drew back its fist and launched it directly at her face-down monster.

No way! Could a monster's ATK even go that high? Well, not like her face-down would see any use now; the moment the fist connected with the card on the field, it all but exploded as a big -8000 appeared overhead. Talk about bad luck.

"W-Wow, that was fast! The winner is Press Dalton," Aislin's voice chimed from above. "And the next duel is between...Akio Muzuki-Frankline and Michelle Kine?"
Guess I'd better get back up there, Kim noted, as she turned and stepped off stage.

The audience exploded in chatter, mostly about how high Golem's attack had been and how merciless Press was even against the President. Press took no notice of the audience, instead leaving the stage as if nothing happened.

Kim had lost her match to a spectacular stroke of luck of her opponent, without having the possibility to even use her deck.
Akio didn't have time to think about that, though. His second match was about to start, and his opponent had shown previously to be if not fearsome, at least competent. He would've been, technically, at an advantage as Koa'ki Meirus had powers to counter specifically LIGHT monsters, and Michelle's deck consisted probably only of those.

Or, they would have, except that he still didn't have Drago. Without that one, his possibilities of winning were drastically cut down. Still, he was there to give the Koa'kis a test run in a serious duel, so he had to at least try his best.

The president had already returned to the announcer's seat, he realized, when her voice chimed in from the amplificator: "The last duel of the first quarter was won by Press Dalton. The semifinals are about to begin. For the first match, I ask Akio Muzuki and Michelle Kine to step inside the arena."

Akio got up silently and made his way to the center of the arena, meeting the look of his opponent.

Michelle was stunned by how high Press' Golem's atk had risen. It was very rare to see a monster's atk go up that high, and on the first turn as well. That would be a tough battle to fight, if she had to. Well, there was no time to worry about that now. What mattered now was the next duel. Her against the Koa'ki Meirus. She hoped that her adjustments would aid her now. "Let's go, Freya," Michelle said to her faithful Spirit Partner. Freya nodded and smiled as they walked over to the stage, their eyes trained on Akio, who stared back at them. Michelle looked at her Duel Disk, then took a deep breath and looked back at Akio. "Here goes nothing," Michelle muttered.

Xi stepped up onto the stage, muttering something about her full name in the process. Not loud enough for anyone else to hear, but she was certainly muttering it. Press Dalton. That was her opponent. He'd pulled a pretty interesting win against Kim just a couple duels ago; that 'Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem' was a beast to be reckoned with. But Xi wasn't faltering in her confidence that it was no match for her own fusion ace monster: 'Dark Paladin'. As she stepped up to her spot, looking directly at her opponent, Xi voiced her opinion pretty clearly.

"That was an impressive win just before. But don't think you'll get by that easily against me."

Press calmly made his way over to the stage, adjusting his Duel Disk so that it was comfortable. He stopped when he reached where he was supposed to go and looked at his opponent. She said some nonsense to him, which he didn't let faze him. He pushed up his glasses with two fingers, then simply said, "We'll see."

"The computer has decided! Xiuhcoatl Jones will go first! Contestants...DUEL!"

Turn 1: Xi : 8000 / Press : 8000
"That's not my goddamn name," Xi seethed, drawing her five starting cards. Then she grinned. "Looks like we'll be off to a strong start this time! I'll get us started by activating the Spell Card: Dragon Shrine! This card lets me send one Dragon-Type monster straight from my deck to the Graveyard." Revealing the 'Blue-Eyes White Dragon' she pulled from the deck for the card's effect, Xi continued, "And, if I send a monster without an effect like 'Blue-Eyes' here, I can send one more dragon to my Graveyard. And I choose 'Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon'."

Sending the second dragon from her deck to the Graveyard, Xi next revealed two cards in her hand. 'Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders', and 'Exploder Dragon'. "Next, I'll activate the effect of Redox in my hand. By discarding him along with an EARTH monster like my 'Exploder Dragonwing', I can Special Summon any one monster from my Graveyard. And I choose 'Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon'!" The hologram of a metallic black dragon rose from below, until the towering metal dragon had appeared in its entirety. With a metallic screeching roar, the display of 2800/2400 appeared over the dragon's head. "And now I'll activate 'Red-Eyes's' effect; this lets me Special Summon any one Dragon-Type monster from my hand or Graveyard. And now, freshly tossed in there, I choose 'Blue-Eyes White Dragon'!" A second holographic dragon, this time from above, descended upon the field. 3000/2500. "Sadly, I can't attack on the first turn, so I'll have to leave it to you now."

Turn 2: Xi : 8000 / Press : 8000
Press drew his next card and examined along with the rest of his hand. The Red-Eyes would prove to be a prominent threat if he didn't remove it. However, none of the monsters in his hand had enough Atk to destroy it. At least, not yet. Press took one card from his hand and announced, "I Summon 'Machina Gearframe' in Attack Position." The orange-and-silver automaton appeared on the field, assuming a fighting stance, its stats registering as 1800/0. "When this monster is Normal Summoned, I can add one 'Machina' monster from my Deck to my hand, and I choose 'Machina Fortress'." The card ejected itself from Press' deck, and Press added it to his hand. "Now, by discarding 'Chronomaly Mayan Machine' and 'Machina Fortress' from my hand, I am allowed to Special Summon 'Machina Fortress' from my graveyard." The large tank-like monster emerged from the ground, producing a menacing grinding sound resembling a growl. 2500/1600.

"'Machina Gearframe', being a Union monster, can equip itself to a Machine-type monster, and I equip it to my 'Machina Fortress'," Press explained, and 'Machina Gearframe' climbed onto 'Machina Fortress' and started acting as if it were aiming 'Machina Fortress'' cannon. "Now I activate the Spell Card: 'Solidarity'. If I have only one Type of monsters in my graveyard, all other monsters on my field with the same Type gain 800 Atk." At that moment, 'Machina Fortress'' Atk rose up to 3300. "Because a Machine-type is in my Graveyard, all other Machine-types gain that bonus." Press pushed up his glasses slightly and commanded, "Battle Phase. 'Machina Fortress', destroy 'Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon'." Its cannon was then aimed at the metallic black beast. Energy was collected within the barrel, then a bolt of energy was fired from the cannon, heading directly for 'Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon'.

The bolt struck the dragon, causing it to roar in pain and explode into shards. As 500 Life Points were shaved off from Xi, Press continued, "I Set two cards and end my turn."

Turn 3: Xi : 7500 / Press : 8000
"Hmm..." That 3300-ATK Machina Fortress was a threat. But nothing her trusty Dark Paladin couldn't down in time. But it seemed that just as Xi drew her card, somebody came bursting into the room. Quite loudly, at that. Along with a few spectators, Xi turned and looked at who it was. Old man, damn bulky for his age, a hawk on the shoulder...this could only be one man.

"There's been an emergency on our campus," said Headmaster Aksel Kolman. "All of you with spirit partners, come with me immediately. The rest of you, return to your respective dorms. We'll pick up this tournament another day." He could see the Spirit Partners clear as day; anybody could. Those belonged to the students who would be coming along with him about this emergency But he wasn't about to just send off a bunch of students to deal with this. No, that would be unfair to them. He had to send off a staff member too. Fortunately, there was one in the room. "Mr. Franklin, you're coming along too. Everyone, follow me."

Akio's first reaction was just to think "what a bother", but the Headmaster looked pretty damn concerned. It took something serious to get the old man so worked up, so he decided to just save his questions for later and follow him. He yelled at the students: "Well, you heard him! Stay close and follow!".
Anna, Michelle, Aislin and Kim followed suit, while everyone else gathered at the other exit, spurred by the Headmaster's indication.

Michelle was a little concerned. The fact that the Headmaster was here was enough cause to be concerned, but to ask everyone with Spirit Partners to come with him? That sounded like something big was going on, and Michelle hoped that it wasn't going to be anything dangerous.

Freya noticed Michelle's concern and reassured her, "Don't worry, whatever this is, I'm sure we'll be fine and things will go back to normal." Michelle smiled and replied, "You're right. Thanks, Freya." Michelle then asked, "Headmaster, what's going on? What do our Spirit Partners have to do with this?"

The Headmaster turned to Michelle and told her: "I'll explain when we get there! Now we have to hurry!" Speeding through the campus grounds, they reached the clearing behind the Slifer Red dormitory. In a corner, a boy was lying unconscious, his deck scattered on the ground and his Duel Disk apparently fried. Pointing to the bird on his shoulder with one hand and pulling a card out of his pocket with the other hand, the headmaster said "Captain found this boy like this, and led me to him. I can't say for sure what caused this, but I'm not about to let something like this continue on this campus." Revealing the card to the group with him - Fabled Lurrie - Kolman continued "This card was on the boy when I found him. Since the lot of you with Spirit Partners are among the best we've got, I'd like for most of you kids to look into this elsewhere while I investigate here. Mr. Franklin, you'll be joining them for safety's sake; a bunch of students walking around in this situation sounds a bit risky, given this boy's state." Handing the card to Akio, he finished explaining the situation with "The children have Spirit Partners; they should be able to track this card back to its original owner. That's why I called them here."

Akio was taken aback: "I... understand, Mr. Kolman... but may I ask... why me, specifically? I mean... if it's really what it looks like, wouldn't it be better if you sent an actual professor with them? I'm sure many of the teachers are better duelists than I am".

"For a couple of reasons," Headmaster Kolman answered, lifting up the boy and slinging him over the shoulder that wasn't currently occupied by a well-behaved bird of prey. "First and foremost, I have a hunch that your deck would be effective against the culprit, based on the card. Secondly, you happened to be the first staff member I spotted, and the professors are all busy at present regardless. And finally, you seem to be a very intelligent young man; that's always a good thing to have when investigating something." Starting back toward the main building, Kolman concluded "For now, take Kine and Black with you. I'll keep MacBeth and Yamaguchi here with me in case this happens again while you three are away."

Being saddled with that kind of responsibility was definitely what Akio didn't want, but he couldn't say no to the Headmaster. Still, he was right. His deck would probably be really useful against a Fabled deck. They WERE, after all, LIGHT monsters. "Well... okay", Akio answered, "I'll start looking for the criminal at once, Mr. Headmaster. You two", he told Kim and Michelle, "Spirit Partners can trace images from the past of an object or something like that, right? Yours can do it?"

A high-pitched screech-like roar from Falco answered Akio. And to translate, Kim. "Falco says that it's something like that. If they hold the card, they can track down the spirit it belongs to; holding this card would at least get us in the right direction. Only, he doesn't have hands..." Looking at Michelle and her Spirit Partner, Kim said "Freya will have to do the tracking."

"Me?" Freya asked in surprise. She knew she had the ability, but never really paid any attention to it. "Well, I, uh, I can try, but I've never actually done this before." Michelle placed her hand on Freya's shoulder and smiled. "It'll be fine, Freya," Michelle reassured her. "I'm sure you can do it." Freya took a deep breath, then exhaled and said, "Alright, I'll do it."

Freya took the card and held it in front of her, then closed her eyes. A second later she felt something, an urge to get her to go a certain direction. "This way," Freya said as she turned and began walking down the path, while somehow managing to avoid holes and small plants that would have normally tripped her. "It's definitely getting stronger," Freya said as she continued walking, her eyes still closed. "You're all still here, right?" Freya asked. "Every step of the way," Michelle replied. "Just keep leading us. You're doing fine."

The three people following the apparently sleepwalking girl would have usually been a funny sight, but for some reason none of the students that saw the unusual scene felt like laughing.

Maybe, it was the grave expression on the students' faces, or the worried aura that radiated from all of them - even the usually apathetic aid professor Franklin.
The group kept following Freya for a while, as she walked through the corridors of the main campus building, taking turns left and right. Apparently, the criminal was attempting to lose them by taking a lot of turns. Normally, that WOULD have been enough to throw them off, but with Freya guiding them, there was no way he'd be able to get away.

And, true to word, after taking another turn in a small courtyard, they found a hooded figure crouching in the shadows, panting.

"Shh", whispered Akio, "We need to take him by surprise".

The looks on the two girls' faces spoke miles of what they thought of his plan, but Akio just ignored them.
The guy in the corner, though, didn't. Finally noticing them, he turned to the three and muttered: "What the... who the hell are you?"

Dusk woke up from a nap in the middle of campus when chaos decided it was time to try and figure out what is currently going on. Potential is something that must be cultivated not just expected. Saying that he was told to be a proverb. He stood and began walking nowhere in particular though he did notice a girl who appeared to be sleepwalking and suddenly thought that chaos was responsible. "That isn't funny Chaos." Chaos was just as confused but wasn't speaking for whatever reason. So he continued walking until he found three people who seemed like they might know what is going on. "Hello? I'm Dusk. Do you know what is going on?"

Angelo rode on his duel runner as he traveled into the circle city limits, immediately Angelo was mystified by everything he saw. Angelo lived in a farm land so seeing a bustling city like this would be easily impressive. Angelo wanted to tour around and see everything in the city but their was only one important place that he needed to be and that was the academy, Angelo wanted to be a great turbo dueling champion one day. Everything Angelo did was so he could prepare for this: making his own duel runner, getting 2 extra jobs to pay for tuition, and unfortunately leaving home with his parents disapproval. This was Angelo's dream and it didn't matter if he had approval or not so he was going to make it some how. Angelo soon drove up to the academy in his duel runner and parked it, Angelo's duel runner wasn't the prettiest but it was as fast as any other. Angelo was biting on a toothpick as he walked into the tournament area. Biting on a toothpick was old habit he picked up back on the farm to help him deal with the tediousness of working their while most adults were smokers Angelo resigned to biting a toothpick so he wouldn't get any ideas on the subject. Angelo made sure his deck was with him as he walked through and decided that he should look around the place before reporting in as student. Angelo saw a few people nearby and Angelo was ready to start making friends but Angelo did wonder where the aura of seriousness came from as he got closer so Angelo decided to keep his distance and watched the others to see what would happen

The criminal noticed that he was surrounded: the three people that had entered the courtyard were joined by two other students, entering from the other two doors.
"Ah, shit", he snarled, "Guess I'm just gonna have to get rid of you all. With the power I was gifted with, I'm invincible now!".

Before anyone could lift a finger, he drew a strange harpoon-like... thing from his left sleeve, and threw it at Akio's Duel Disk. Then, he pulled, dragging him closer.
The very moment he did that, a bizarre curtain of purple flames burst from the ground, separating the two from the stunned bystanders. Then, he screamed psychotically: "Hahaha! Ready to die? I challenge you... to a Shadow Duel!"
Akio grit his teeth and cursed under his breath this lunatic and the old man who had seen it fit to throw him to do the dirty work of catching a Shadow Duelist. But then again, whether he won or lost, he might as well stroke his ego a bit and look cool in the process.
"The only thing you're gonna get gifted with will be a couple of handcuffs... and a kick to the ass, imbecilic windbag. DRAW!"

TURN 1: Akio 8000 - Shadow Duelist 8000

The two drew their starting hands, and the hooded figure proclaimed: "Ha! Perfect! I Set one Monster in face-down Defense position, and end my turn!"

TURN 2: Akio 8000 - Shadow Duelist 8000

Akio taunted his opponent: "Oh, really? All that noise for two face-down cards and a monster? Pffft..."
His hand looked decent, though he was still pissed that he didn't have Drago, especially in such a fragile situation.
Iron Core, Urnight, Core Reinforcement, Mirror Force and Core Blast... not bad, but let's hope to draw something decent...

"I draw!" Crusader? Well, damn. Something useful, for a change.
He smiled, and then said: "Well, I Set two face-down cards, then I Summon 'Koa'ki Meiru Urnight'!"

The familiar armor-clad centaur descended on the field. "Then, of course, I use its Effect! So, by revealing this 'Iron Core of Koa'ki Meiru' in my hand, I can Special Summon another monster from my deck! And I choose... Koa'ki Meiru Sandman!"

The Koa'ki Meiru emblem lit up on Urnight's chest, and the monster emitted a feral cry, that resembled a slightly high-pitched version of a lion's roar mixed with a hyena's cry. A whirlwind of sand started forming by Urnight's side, when the Shadow Duelist yelled "I activate one of my Trap cards! With Raigeki Break, I can destroy your Urnight if I discard one card!"
True to word, he discarded one of his cards, and a lightning shot from the sky, frying Urnight. Akio expected to see his monster's image shattered into pieces, but instead, he saw it burned to ashes by the lightning, as it screamed inhumanly, before collapsing to the ground and turning to ash. All this while his opponent was grinning like a madman.

Ok, Akio thought, this creep is probably trying to scare me. Maybe, he thinks I'll be traumatized by seeing my beloved partner suffer or something like that. Well, tough luck, freak.
And of course, the idiot confirmed his hypothesis right away: "What's up, runt? Starting to realize how much it's gonna hurt?"

Akio didn't even bother to answer - he'd let his monsters do that for him.
"Well", he continued, "you forgot one thing: destroying Urnight can't stop his ability. Which means that I still have Sandman on the field", he said, pointing at the other monster, which looked like a bulky and headless humanoid statue with a fanged mouth on its neck.
"And I'm going to use it, trust me. Go, Sandman! Destroy his face-down monster!". The sand statue charged and threw a punch at the monster, which was revealed as being a small winged white horse. The shadow duelist interjected: "I activate the effect of the monster you just flipped face-up, which is 'The Fabled Peggulus'! This way, I reveal 'The Fabled Cerburrel' in my hand, and send "Fabled Oltro" from my Deck to the Graveyard!"

After the effect resolved, Sandman grabbed the tiny, frightened (or at least, it looked frightened) horse and smashed it to the ground, before stomping on its head.
The monster dissolved, then Akio announced: "Okay, and with this, I end my turn. Of course, to keep Sandman on the field, I reveal 'Koa'ki Meiru Wall' in my hand".

TURN 3: Akio 8000 - Shadow Duelist 8000

The shadow duelist drew his card, and said: "I activate the effect of 'The Fabled Chawa', and discard a card from my hand to Special Summon it to my side of the field! Then, I activate the effect of the monster I discarded, 'Fabled Krus', and Special Summon 'Fabled Oltro' from my Graveyard. And then, I immediately use its effect: I discard 'The Fabled Cerburrel' to Summon 'The Fabled Ganashia' from my hand-"

"And let me guess", Akio interrupted him, "When you discard Cerburrel, it Summons itself to your side of the field?". The shadow duelist looked irritated for having been interrupted: "Well, yes it does. So this means I now have four monsters on my side of the field... and this is really bad news for you. First! I tune Cerburrel and Oltro to Synchro Summon my first helper, 'The Fabled Kudabbi'!"
The two monsters transformed into two rings of iron, engraved with decorations, and two glowing dots insde those rings. Then, the rings projected electrical shocks towards the glimmering orbs, and then released a beam of light. When the light cleared, on the field was standing a monster that looked like a bull with a box curtain covering its face.

Akio was nervous. That monster looked absolutely ridiculous, and its 2000 attack points were anything but threatening. What was that idiot planning?

"Thought I was finished already? Ha! I still have two monsters, and guess what? I tune Ganashia and Chawa! The sum of their levels is also four, so I can use them to Synchro Summon another monster: 'Armory Arm'!".
Akio hadn't dueled all that much, but still recognized Armory Arm. That monster could act as an Equip card, raising the attack of the monster it was equipped to by 1000 points. Which meant that...

"I now equip Armory Arm to Kudabbi, raising its Attack by 1000 points! Go, Kudabbi! Attack!"

Kudabbi charged at Sandman, shooting the Arm from its back. Akio interrupted the attack: "I activate Mirror Force!".
The flying fist clashed onto a barrier, that shone radiantly, and...

When the light died down, Akio opened his eyes, expecting to see Kudabbi in pieces, but it was still alive and well, and it hadn't interrupted its run against Sandman. When the iron fist struck his monster, pulverizing it instantly, and then continued its run towards Akio.
Akio had only a second to process what happened, before being struck by the speeding metal fist square in the chest and being thrown to the ground by the force of the blow. The impact was hard: his chest and back felt like they were being torn apart, and he could only thank his luck that he was still in one piece.

He got shakily back on his feet and asked: "What... why is your monster still there? Don't tell me..."

"Yes! When I have no cards in my hand, Kudabbi can't be destroyed by card effects! See? I'm invincible! And now, I end my turn. You should surrender, you know? At least, I won't have to hurt you too much before killing you!"

TURN 4: Akio 5000 - Shadow Duelist 8000

"Oh, you'd like that. I draw!"

Core Overclock... perfect.

He announced: "I summon 'Koa'ki Meiru Crusader', and then activate Core Overclock! This way, all my monsters gain 500 Attack points!"

"And how does that help? Kudabbi still has 3000 attack points, and your monster has just 2400!"

"See, idiot, for how much you talk about your incredible power, it's quite fragile. Your monster can't be destroyed by card effects, true... but I don't need them. I activate Overclock's second effect: by sending one Iron Core from my hand to the Graveyard, Crusader's attack is raised by another 1000 points!"

Crusader grew in size, and with a bellow, charged Kudabbi. The opponent's monster tried to defend itself, but the fury of the charging giant was unstoppable. Crusader started hacking pieces off, and when it had severed all of its opponent's limbs dropped the sword and started pummeling the beast to the ground, until it was reduced to a bloody mess, after which, it disappeared, but not before one of its horns flew off and hit its owner in the face.

"Now", Akio stated, "I can use Crusader's effect, and take back to my hand Urnight! Sadly, the Attack boost received by Crusader only lasts for this turn, but now you have no cards in your hand and on your field, so I doubt you'll be able to mount a counterattack right now... guess you didn't think of that when you summoned your monster, thinking it was invincible, hm? I reveal Urnight to keep Crusader on the field, then I end my turn."

TURN 5 - Akio 5000 - Shadow Duelist 7600

The shadow duelist grit his teeth and muttered something before drawing, then looked at the card and grinned: "Here it is... the card I needed! I activate 'Vessel of the Forgotten Gods'! With this, if I pay all my Life Points except 1000, you have to discard your hand, and I can draw until I have as many cards as the level of the highest-level monster you discarded plus one! ARGH!"
A shadowy aura enveloped the cloaked man, and when it dissolved, his body was enveloped in barbed chains, and he wore on his face goggles similar to those on the 'Fabled Lurrie' card the group had found on his earlier victim.

The man grinned, and shrieked. His voice sounded inhuman, as if it had been heavily distorted: "Now, with the four cards I have in my hand, I can do... THIS! I SPECIAL SUMMON 'THE FABLED NOZOCHEE' WITH ITS EFFECT, BY DISCARDING 'FABLED LURRIE', THEN SPECIAL SUMMON 'FABLED RAVEN' WITH NOZOCHEE'S EFFECT! BUT IT IS NOT OVER! LURRIE COMES BACK FROM THE GRAVEYARD. THEN, I NORMAL SUMMON 'THE FABLED MITZOJI' AND AFTER I USE RAVEN'S EFFECT TO DISCARD KRUS, WHICH CAN BRING KUDABBI BACK TO MY FIELD, AND RAISING RAVEN'S LEVEL BY ONE, EVERYTHING IS READY! I TUNE 'RAVEN' AND 'LURRIE' TO SYNCHRO SUMMON 'THE FABLED UNICORE'! AND THEN, I TUNE NOZOCHEE AND MITZOJI TO SYNCHRO SUMMON ANOTHER ARMORY ARM!"

Akio was surprised. He never heard of that card, but he had a feeling that he wouldn't find it on any official catalogue, anyway. Whoever that madman was, he had access to pirate cards. Or even... wait, weren't Fableds...?
Oh, shit. Spirit cards?

The madman didn't give him time to reason, though: "GO, UNICORE AND KUDABBI! DESTROY THAT UNBELIEVER!"

Unicore was the first to strike, piercing through Crusader's armor and chest. The flying fist collided with Akio's chest again, sending him sprawling backwards, and making him land on the harsh terrain. Sharp, pointy pebbles scratched his back through his shirt and his breath was cut short when the ground greeted him. But before he could do anything, he found himself staring down the veiled beast. He raised an arm to protect himself, uselessly, before the monster stepped on him with its hard hooves.
After a few moments that felt like an eternity of pain, he finally no longer felt the hooves against him, so he opened his eyes and got up.

He was bloodied, hurting and could barely stand, but he was alive.

"WHAT... THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE!", shrieked his monstruous opponent. "YOU SHOULD BE DEAD! THE DAMAGE YOU TOOK SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH TO END YOU! WHY DO YOU STILL HAVE 200 LIFE POINTS?"

Even Akio didn't understand, at first. But then, he remembered.

Panting, and holding his side, Akio answered: "You... overestimated your... Armory Arm's effect. That's... why you... didn't kill me."

"WHAT MOCKERY IS THIS? IT WAS CLEAR, YOU SHOULD BE DEAD! MY MONSTERS SHOULD HAVE INFLICTED 5300 POINTS OF DAMAGE TO YOU, AND YOU CANNOT HAVE ACTIVATED ANY CARDS, BECAUSE UNICORE WOULD HAVE STOPPED YOU! SO HOW COULD YOU..."

Akio allowed himself a grin: "Because... Armory Arm only... inflicts damage equal... to the attack... the destroyed monster... has in the... graveyard. And since... I had Core Overclock... on the field... Crusader's Attack... was 2400, but the... damage you... inflicted to me... was only 1900. So... if you... make your math... you'll find out... that you inflicted... only 4800... points of... damage to me... and I had... 5000 Life Points."

"IT MATTERS NOT! I WILL KILL YOU DURING MY NEXT TURN! EVEN IF YOU DRAW A MONSTER, YOU'RE FINISHED! I END MY TURN!"

TURN 6 - Akio 200 - Shadow Duelist 1000

"So... sure? Let's... see if we... can prove... your theory. It doesn't... matter what... I draw... though. I will... win anyway. And now... you'll see why... I... draw!"

Hello there, Speeder. What a nice time for you to show up.

"The card I drew is a monster... but I can't Summon it... for now. It's still... my draw phase... and now that... I have one card... in my hand... I'm not... affected by your... Unicore's effect... Which means... that I can activate... the effect of the... 'Iron Core of... Koa'ki Meiru' in my... Graveyard... so I discard... Speeder... and get my core... back."
"Now... I activate the first... of my face-down cards... 'Core... Reinforcement'. It lets me... Summon a Monster from... my Graveyard... and I choose... Urnight."

A giant pillar of metal emerged on Akio's side of the field. When it opened, Urnight came out, with wiring attached to its back.

"Now...", Akio continued, "we're in... my Standby Phase... and I activate... my second... face-down card... 'Core Blast'...". He coughed up blood, but simply grit his teeth and continued. "Now... you control... one more monster than I do... so I can... destroy all your cards except for one monster... and I choose... *cough* Unicore and Armory Arm..."

The image of an Iron Core attached to a machine appeared on the field. The wirings broke, and unleashed a bombardment of fireballs on the Shadow Duelist's side of the field, burning Unicore to a charred corpse.

"And now... I can... activate Urnight's effect... And I Summon... *cough* 'Koa'ki Meiru Guardian'... then, I activate... Core Overclock's second... effect... and discard... my Iron Core... and my monsters... gain 1000... attack points..."

The centaur and the stone statue both increased in size, towering over everyone else. They charged, Urnight cutting up Kudabbi with its giant knife, and Guardian punching the shadow duelist in the stomach, knocking him to the ground.

The moment the shadow duelist fell to the ground, unconscious, the harpoon and the curtain of flames disappeared.
Akio fell to his knees and then laid back on the ground, and said: "What are... you staring at... idiots... call a medic...", then coughed up blood again.
