The Dark Elves came with Avalon. Avalon brought them over so that the economy of the Mainland could be restarted from the goods and such. Unless you had come before the demons had appeared, which will be, say, two years beforehand, then you'd have to come with Avalon.

The forest has all manner of demons; collecting herbs and other plants would be next to impossible without getting snatched and eaten, vaporized, incinerated, or another horrible death by demon.You can have a boat that came earlier, but no one wants to go to the Mainland- boats are expensive, and they don't have much to trade, and there are a few demons that can reach a boat.
