Welcome to the Capitol City

The Country of Zhùfú-Guāng is in dire need of rehabilitation after a steep financial crisis. War has killed any semblance of unity. For years, surrounding territories struggled for power within an imperial government system. Unstable growth rates across the empire have stunted trade and lowered the currency value. Now that the central government’s power has weakened, wealthy families are jumping at the chance to exercise their influence. However, rumors speak of royal subjects’ desires to shift the land into a Republic. In these times of distrust and uncertainty, gold and loyalties are either your best friend or worst enemy. As an active member of this RP you will be living in the capital city, Xiàngyáng, as a member of one of the five noble families working as a government official.

I want people to have the ability to interact in different places with multiple people, so please follow this format when making IC posts:

Character Creation

The families are listed by influence. Each clan has an agenda to push. Keep in mind, whichever clan you choose will influence other people's interactions with you, especially those within certain departments.

-Please note, if you are the head of a clan or a chief minister you are allowed to create a "perk." Perks can be anything of your choosing that helps your department or clan. There is an example in the occupation tab. However, I will review perk submissions before excepting them.

-Fun Fact: The country is neither matriarchal or patriarchal. Children take the name of whichever parent comes from a more influential family. Also, most citizens follow Chinese Folk Religion. If your character is religious, this gives you a lot of room to build on (it's a diverse religious system).

Character List

-I will review all character sheets. Please note, this is a realistic RP so characters will not have any special/magical abilities.

Sooo excited to get started!

I do have a question though. What era or dynasty, in general, will we be drawing influence from? I know a little bit about Imperial Chinese history but I'd like to
research and learn some more about the high court, family dynamics, etc.

Also, I had the thought that we could make a Chatzy or something to communicate with each other more easily but whatever you want to do ^u^ Going to get started on my CS!

I suppose it would fall somewhere between the decline of the Sui dynasty and the buildup of the Tang dynasty. It closely follows the Three Departments and Six Ministries model of government, but there are more ministries. At the moment, I'm still deciding over specifics, so this might change a bit. However, that's only in regards to government structure. Do you have a favorite time period for art and dress? XD I'm not going to force any guys that join the RP to have topknots (they can have them if they want... of course)!

Ah, okay! Definitely gives me something to look into. Also, I don't have a specific period of art or dress that I'm particular too--however, I will say that the Tang (along with the Ming and Yuan) is my favorite era of Chinese history. I love how cosmopolitan the court was, and how their clashes with Central Asia and beyond affected everything. It's really one the most interesting periods in history to me. Silk Road is my jam. But yeah, that sounds like a great time to set it. I'm cool with topknots for sure :P I also see some potential for a cool overarching plotline, with the Li family seizing the reigns of the empire from Sui--is that what you based the premise on?

That was part of what inspired this RP. I'm considering having non-noble officials join the RP. However, I still want a greater balance of higher ranking people than lower class citizens. It makes more sense with the setting.

I'm about to head home from work - will get working on a CS when I get home. I'm only vaugly familiar with Chinese History - but very familar with Japan's history and the history of Rome (And how that worked as a republic and empire ect). So I should be okay in the setting.

I will probably be behind whichever faction wants to turn the country into a republic :)

Well, I too am severely under educated regarding Chinese history. But the opening has captured my interest. It just sounds like a fun RP. So, I'm going to try to come up with a character for it.

@Lilitu: That's fine! Hahaha, I'm not a history scholar either. While this is inspired by ancient china, it is still a fictional RP. Don't worry too much. We won't be dealing with overly complex government structures or settings. It should be easy to follow the RP once things get rolling.

-Also, I too am watching NBC's Dracula and love the cast!

What is the religious climate of Zhùfú-Guāng?

Edit: I didn't mean to ignore your last post. It hadn't loaded on my browser. But that's a relief. As I said, I find the potential of this RP idea very interesting. I'm actually more fimiliar with legends and wuxia (& even faux wuxia), myself.

And NBC's Dracula is my favorite thing on television. I'm praying that they don't cancel it. It's like the one thing that can undo the damage to contemporary vampire mythology that the twilight series has heaped upon it. And maybe I'm also a bit of a Lucy/Mina fan... :3

@Lilitu: I'm still working out some details, religion being one of them. I want it to have an important role though.

-Katie McGrath is a fun actress to watch.

I love watching her. It's enthralling. The chemistry between characters, the writing. There's nothing bad about it. .

If it makes any difference to what you're working out, I would vote for a big influence from Taoism & Chinese Folk Religion.

Taoism was one of the more prevalent religions during the Tang dynasty. It's an interesting concept to look into. Chinese Folk Religion will either be hard or easy to work with XD It's a very diverse belief system. However, it provided something for people to bond over, and the the variations still adhere to some basic principles. Those who don't follow specific beliefs would still be accepted (in theory I suppose) into the Chinese Folk Religion community as a whole. It should make for an interesting set of people. I'll have to edit my character's profile! Again, I'm no historian, and haven't done extensive research on religion, so I may make mistakes while RP'ing.

No biggie. Like I said, I'm no scholar either, I just thought that those would make for cool inspiration.

-Sorry for not posting guys! I was busy on Valentine's and most of today.

-@BabySama: I love the idea of using Chatzy. It's one of my favorite collaborative sites/programs.

--I have a migraine right now. I'm able to use the computer for small spurts of time because of the meds I'm taking for them. I should be able to rejoin around mid-week.
