Characters perceive words and actions in different ways because of their differing experiences, values, and beliefs. The fact that so many people don't intentionally make their characters misinterpret a phrase or action really makes it hard to get sucked into the setting. A lot of roleplayers make it feel like the story you're in is a game that you're supposed to try to win.

We've officially had more conflict in the OOC than we have in the IC, gents. Congratulations! We are failures as fictional writers, but can hopefully remedy that with our curiously dramatic and complex character arcs in real life.
