The Visitor
This roleplay is a small scale casual game centered around a special forces team and its mission. The setting is Earth, in an alternate near-future where the USA has been divided and is no longer a superpower. Russia and the EU wage war across Europe and in space. In the midst of chaos, an unidentified object appears suddenly in Earths orbit. It makes no demands, gives no message or reason, but it quickly destroys most of Earths fledgling space fleet.
Space Industry in 2024
By the year 2020, the major powers had sizeable assets in space exploration, colonization and industry. In 2019 Russia put the first semi-permanent base on the moon-heavily armed and fortified-The EU responded by petitioning the Atmospheric Weapons Enforcement agency to deploy Orbital Platforms to safeguard against ICBM attacks by Russia and it's allies. The new space race was well under way.
The Russian Republic
The Russian Republic declared a general war on the EU as the first anti-ICBM weapons platforms were lifted into orbit by the Atmospheric Weapons Enforcement agency. Already at war with Turkey and Iran, the Russian military astounded analysts with its quick, decisive victories in Eastern Europe, reclaiming territory formerly under old Soviet rule. The AWE ensured that the war was contained to Europe and the no nukes or major civilian populations were engaged. New rules of War had been established with the rapid advances in laser weaponry, advanced shielding and the development of Space Weaponry.
Long-time President Mikhail Denikin consolidated power over two decades in the leadership. An ex-military man, Denikin lived through the cold war of the 60's and 70's in the field. An outspoken supporter of Russian European-Asian dominance, Denikin holds command of the largest military force on earth. Russian corporations churn out military surplus for the Russian war machine. Muscovy AeroSpace is a multi-national corporation with industrial complexes and airfields in 39 countries across Asia and South America.
The European Union
Following the collapse of the global economy in 2008, the EU reorganized economically and politically. With the United Kingdom and Germany at its head, the EU made an astounding financial rebound and quickly moved into the Aerospace industry in an attempt to grab marketshare before Russia could dominate the field. With the second largest space fleet in the world, the EU is at war with Russia.
The Western United States
The Western United States (WUSA) seceded from the union following the collapse of the American offensive in Iraq-2005. Debt and two tiresome and costly wars took a toll on the American people. When rising sea levels and increasing storm activity flooded the southern middle states, the parties finally split.
A new party, based in San Diego comprised of both center leftists and conservatives drew the new American border just east of Texas. Texas would claim sovereignty 180 days later as it invaded Mexico...but that is another story.
President Mark Carver initiated sound economic policies and foreign trade agreements. The WUSA was invited to the Atmospheric Weapons Enforcement summit in 2009 and joined in 2011, signing the charter along with 178 other countries. The WUSA provides personel, intelligence and technology to the AWE.
The Eastern United States
After the failed military campaign in the middle east, and the devestating news of the WUSA leaving the Union, the president and vice-president resigned together. The House Speaker resumed office until 2008 when President Michael Turner was elected for an unprecedented life-term. Multiple media sources within (and outside) of the EUSA said the election was a sham and that Turner bought his office. A conservative from South Carolina, Turner recalled all major military forces in Europe and Asia just as Russian tanks crossed the Ukranian border and seized Crimea. The EU felt abandoned and NATO collapsed. To fill the void, the Atmospheric Weapons Enforcement agency was created. Many critics claimed the EUSA had been bought by Russian money.
Technology
Weapons
Weapons technology has advanced greatly since the late 20th century-mainly in manipulation of energy fields and concentrated lasers. The United States Navy developed the first defensive laser platform in 2009. The landmark weapon was too costly to deploy in significant numbers. In the next decade, the technology would advance rapidly.
Tactical gear in the field also saw an advancement. With the continuation of war in the Middle East, Western Europe, South America and Southeast Asia, every battleground was a test-field for nations newest developments. The Russian Republic deployed energy based camouflage for its special forces in Iran and Afghanistan. The "Ghost Cloaks" were quickly adapted by special forces in Great Britain, Japan and England but on a smaller scale.
Rising costs in training and equipment placed a higher value on the longevity of the common soldier. Advances in body armor, small arms and tactical field gear also progressed, most notably in the high-powered energy rifles and the movement enhancing gravity-boots deployed by American Forces in the second Iraq/Syria war. A handful of marines had become as devestating as a 20th century tank.
Energy shielding became incredible important for protecting the billion dollar aircraft that protected the upper atmospheres over every major nation. Capable of deflecting any unsustained (>15 seconds) fire from conventional, laser and energy based weaponry, the Energy Shield revolution redefined warfare in the modern era-but at a cost. The energy generators are enormous power-hungry monstronsities of technological engineering. Only major aircraft and large buildings deploy Energy Shielding. In Japan, concentric circles of shielding are under construction around Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka.

OOC and disclaimer:Standard forum rules apply. I'm the GM but I want big decisions to be taken by consensus. The RP doesn't work without players having fun. At max accepting 5 players. The list above is tentative on a first come basis. Have characters completed by 3/10/15ASAP. The first posts will be discussed in OOC, and should explain how your character got into/transfers to the Atmospheric Weapons Enforcement. If anyone is not sure where to start with characters ask for help-You don't have to use a template but here is a standardized one:
