Flannery, the young Gym Leader of the Lavaridge Gym had just arrived in Pettleburg. It had been a long journey, but she was eager to visit her friend Norman right away. She hadn't seen him in some time. They were both very busy with their duties as Gym Leaders. She was traveling light with only her backpack slung over her shoulder and her three Pokeballs on her belt. Spotting the Gym up ahead, she hurried over to the building and then went inside.

Norman was inside, speaking to his son. He didn't take after his father in appearance very much, but his love of Pokémon did. Norman smiled when he saw Flannery. "Flannery, I didn't know you were in town!" he said. "Welcome to the Petalburg Gym. This is my son Rex."

Flannery smiled at Norman. "Yeah, I'm taking a little time away from the Gym. My Gym Trainers can handle it while I'm gone." When Norman introduced Rex to her, she smiled and said, "Hey, Rex, I'm Flannery, but you probably already knew that, huh?"

Rex nodded. "'Course," he said, smiling in a friendly fashion. "And speaking of Gyms..." He turned back to his father. "Dad, I'm gonna go on another adventure, just like back home in Johto." He took a Poké Ball from his belt and released a small, orange Pokémon. It resembled a chick, and had a ring of yellow fuzz around its head. "Dad, Flannery, meet my Torchic. I named her Halo."

"A Fire-type, huh?" Flannery knelt down in front of Halo and smiled. "Hello, Halo." She looked up at Rex. "If you're starting an adventure and raising a Fire-type Pokemon then maybe I can help. I'm a bit of an expert on Fire Pokemon and you look like you could use some advice, no offense. So what do you say?"

Rex bit his lip. His last Starter had been Totodile, a Watet type. He knew how to raise Pokémon, but Flannery was a Gym Leader. She could teach him things others couldn't. Rex nodded. "Yes, please," he said.

"Nope," Rex said. He scooped Halo up in his arms rather than returning her to her Poké Ball. She was a rather unique Torchic, thanks to her personality and band of yellow fuzz. Professor Birch had theorized that she'd retain it when she evolved. He followed Flannery.

Flannery walked beside him as they made their way to the Pokemon Center. When they entered, she went to the counter and asked for two rooms for the night then she handed a key to Rex. "This is to your room. I guess I'll see you bright and early in the morning then."

"Torchi~!" Halo agreed. She leaped from rex's arms to the ground, trying to reach Flannery's Poké Balls.

"She wants to see your Pokémon," Rex laughed.

Flannery smiled. And took one of her Pokeballs off her belt. "I'll show you just one of them for now. Come on out, Torkoal!" The ball opened and the Fire Pokemon came out. It just stood there motionless for a while and then looked down at Halo, who it towered over.

"Torchi?" Halo chirped. She cocked her head to the side. Rex opened up his Pokédex. It said: "Torkoal, the Coal Pokémon. Torkoal digs through mountains in search of coal. If it finds some, it fills hollow spaces on its shell with the coal and burns it. If it is attacked, this Pokémon spouts thick black smoke to beat a retreat."

"Torkoal here is my strongest Pokemon," said Flannery, "but I have two others with me as well." She returned Torkoal to its Pokeball. "Anyway, I'm going to head to bed now. I'll see you in the morning. And you better not sleep in or I'm going to leave without you."

"Got it," Rex said. He scooped Halo up once more and went to his room. Once in the privacy of their room, he said to Halo, "She's cuter than I thought she'd be. And her Pokémon must be extremely strong!"

"Chic!" Halo added.

"I'm sure you're gonna learn a lot from Torkoal and Flannery's other Pokémon." He went into the bathroom and showered, coming out in his boxers. "Well, g'night, Halo."

Flannery went to her room and then plopped down on her bed after taking off her jeans. She then lay her head back on the pillow and looked up at the ceiling as she started to drift off, wondering what kind of a trainer Rex might turn out to be.

Rex slept through the night. It helped that Halo was so warm and cuddly. She woke first. She didn't want Flannery to leave them behind, so she took matters into her own hands. "Toooor..." Her beak glowed as she prepared to use Peck. "Chic!"

"GWAAH!" Rex exclaimed. He sat up extremely fast, sending Halo flying. Despite landing a bit roughly she was laughing quite hard. "Laugh it up, fuzzball."

Flannery had already woken, showered, and gotten breakfast and was waiting in the Pokemon Center Lobby for him with her backpack slung over her shoulders and her foot tapping impatiently on the floor. Patience was not something that Flannery was known for.

Rex came down to the lobby. He looked a bit disheveled-- messy hair, jacket halfway stuffed into his bag. Was it just Rex, or did Halo look embarrassed. He had a big red spot on his forehead where Halo had attacked him. "Morning," he greeted Flannery.
