Chapter 1: Update 1

When the door opens, we are greeted by our new followers, seated around several large tables. As we enter, all stand and bow in our direction before sitting down again. We only nod our head, indicating our approval, and take a seat at the front of the room. They have prepared a feast and the festivities go well into the night, with many toasts being made in our honor. Throughout the evening we slowly are introduced to everyone in the room. We hear many stories of how they came to join with the old man and of their various woes. Most are minor things, long term health issues such as cancer or heart disease or financial debt. A few however are more interesting. We learn of one man's former ties to organized crime and of another man's political aspirations. One woman informs us that she can hear the departed while another claims to be a descendent of one of the Salem witches. By the end of the evening we have met all of our followers.

When all have finally left, the old man takes us back to the laboratory that we were summoned in. We see that during the festivities he had cleaned up the remaining pentagram and set up a table with several maps in the center of the room.

"Please sit. Before you begin your journey, there are several things you should know about our small community. These maps and charts should give you an idea of where we are. After you've become familiar with those, we can talk about your abilities"

Looking at the maps and with the old man's guidance, we find we the community is made of two main buildings, the large main manor where things like the laboratory and banquet hall are, and a smaller motel like building (though much nicer then any motel) where most people live. The buildings sit on several acres of land with a large brink wall enclosing the property. The property sits in the middle of a forest, just outside the unincorporated town of Kneeland, California (about 30 minutes east of Eureka, California). Kneeland thinks of the community as a group of rich eccentrics.

Finishing with the maps, the old man begins to explain what he knows about gods.

"You are only omnipotent within your own knowledge and senses. That means you will have to practice your abilities and it sometimes will require a great deal of focus. At first this will require a deal of calculation and concentration, but eventually it will all become second nature. Fortunately, you and those loyal to you are linked. Power is channeled through them into you. The more faithful they are, the more power. On the flip side, you can channel your power into them, gaining their senses and knowledge. They'll slowly come to recognize your presence and it will become easier to link with them. Be careful though. Using too much power to quickly can reflect on your followers and lead to issues.

The other major thing I know is that you are invulnerable to all mortal attacks and a number of supernatural attacks, so long as you are aware of them. I've seen gods killed by mortal snipers after causing too much trouble too early. That is why you must keep a low profile for the time being. Once you've gained more power you will be much less vulnerable to these kinds of attacks.

Now then, that is all I can think to tell you. Please ask me anything, though my knowledge is somewhat limited.
"

---

Alright, let the official god games begin. I've provided a few possible ideas for ways to continue but anything goes pretty much.

Could we accept sacrifices, taking their wholeness of essence and soul into ourselves, thus growing in knowledge and power without condemning them for eternity?

Sacrifices give a quick, very large, amount of power immediately. 'Pure' souls (virgins, children, white knights, etc) provide a lot more. However in the very long term, you get more in worship.

After death, currently the souls would just go into one of the neutral spirit realms since you don't have somewhere to guide them to. You could trap them in like a gem or something which would provide what you want (I think) but they wouldn't be happy about it.

If our power grows enough, would we be able to forge a new afterlife destination for our followers?

It feels to me like being benevolent would likely be the safer and more rewarding long-term strategy, while taking sacrifices and being a bit more bloodthirsty would be a high-risk high-reward path that may have a weaker future ahead of it. Easier to grow the numbers of the faithful when you aren't killing them / forcing them to kill, after all.

With this in mind, I think I'm officially casting my vote for striving to be a benevolent deity.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the way you were describing the world it sounds like it's a modern day parallel?

I also support becoming a benevolent deity.

You actually have a few options with this. You could create your own by yourself. You could find an existing realm and take it as your own. There are existing realms that are empty or abandoned that you could take or, if you're feeling ambitious, you could steal one. Finally, there are legends that you can get designer realms made by certain deities.

In short, yes.

It feels to me like being benevolent would likely be the safer and more rewarding long-term strategy, while taking sacrifices and being a bit more bloodthirsty would be a high-risk high-reward path that may have a weaker future ahead of it. Basically this. There are ways to make sacrifice more worthwhile, but they're not realistic at this moment. Also they come with lots of bad juju.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the way you were describing the world it sounds like it's a modern day parallel?

I apologize for not mentioning that earlier, but yes. It's basically today's world.

I only mention sacrifice as something willing, and maybe for desperation.

"Well, we should gather the "Help" people like Butlers, maids, servants, gardners and their children and families. . . it should be easy to slow come out of the divine closet without gathering too much attention at first, and grow in strength. We can try feigning more "benign poltergeist" type things, maybe later we could try more miracles than just telekinesis.

What could be interesting is if we wound up angling for a sort of god/goddess of the forest / wild places. Large antlered headdresses always look cool after all, and there's something untamed about the deep places of the wood. A connection to the wilderness is also something that a lot of people in the modern world seem to be sorely missing from their lives, whether they realize it or not.

ActRaiser, it sounds to me like you mean appeal to the common folk first? That seems like a sensible idea.

@Primal Conundrum

Yes. At first though, we'd have a small circle of friends underneath our rich circle of friends. Then we'd spread out to truly larger numbers.

Do we have anything convert we want to do? I need a little more detail before I can write a decent update.

Hmm alright. How about working on how to use miraculous healing at first?
