Sensation & Wonder is a roleplay based upon the structures and mechanics of previous games run under the Absolute Comics banner but with a goal of overcoming the past games' biggest weakness; a lack of collaborative writing. As such, Sensation & Wonder is a collaborative linear sandbox roleplay that seeks to merge and mix the lore of your favourite DC and Marvel characters into one living cohesive world. The idea behind this RP is not to embody our favourite heroes to simply retell iconic stories and origins but to take these characters and make them our own. In fact, the goal of the RP is for players to take their favourite characters and re-imagine them to tell stories together. We only ask that the 'heart' of the character remains the same. Players will take the roles of their favourite characters and tell stories in collaboration with other players in order to develop and grow the world.

How heavily mixed these elements are is dependent upon the players as the world and its lore is shaped by you and your stories. Do Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark know each other? Has Lady Shiva trained with Danny Rand? Have Thor and Superman gone toe to toe? These are questions for you to ask yourself and they can only be answered as the RP unfolds!

Due to the nature of the RP, character submissions will not be based on traditional sheets but on 'Character Proposals'. This differs in that instead of the usual fact spill that a character sheet is based on, a Character Proposal outlines the character you're intending to play, any differences from their source material and a proposed character arc. This is so we know coming in that you have a story you want to tell with this character. Although solo-writing was previously encouraged in past iterations of Absolute Comics, for Sensation & Wonder the emphasis is on collaborative writing. For this reason, the character sheet now includes a section for plots and stories to be fleshed out. While solo writing is allowed, it's not the main goal of the game. When creating a plot, if you have an idea for another character you'd normally write as an NPC, we ask that you instead look for a player willing to take on that role. Even your arc antagonist could be portrayed by another player.

For this reason, Sensation & Wonder is moving away from team sheets. If you desire the X-Men, I invite you to make an open request in the OOC and see if other players are also interested. In the event there is no further interest, you're still allowed to move ahead with the team sheet, but it is preferable that should an interested party come along, you try to accommodate them to the best of your ability. As this is a One Universe RP don't hesitate to mix the teams up a little or try out some new team-ups.

Another major difference this time around is that villainous characters are allowed. Anyone can apply as a villain with or without permission from the 'parent or 'hero' character with the exception of them being called out in an accepted plot or already appearing in the IC. Even still, it is encouraged to use a player character wherever possible however it is understandable that sometimes two ideas will simply not mesh.

Players will only be allowed one driving character concept to start with, potentially able to earn or request a second primary point of view at a later time, pending the IC's activity coupled with their own. However, due to the goals of the RP, it is asked that players instead focus on looking for other players to work alongside in either Roaming or Supporting roles. By no means are you required to fulfill all three roles, and please don't overload yourself, but collaboration is far preferred over simply writing in a corner.

Players interested in the same character will be judged based on the strength of their proposed concept with the GMs choosing the preferred candidate. In the event the GMs find both sheets to be of equal strengths, the decision may come down to which has interested Supporting or Roaming Characters. Should interest be equal or none, both parties may be asked to submit a sample post for review.

In the event that someone applies as a character you were interested in, you will have a window of twenty-four (24) hours to state your intent to compete for the character and then an additional seventy-two (72) hours to submit a competing application*. If a character submission goes unchallenged for twenty-four hours and the GMs have no outstanding issues with it, the character will be accepted.

Losing a character submission contest does not mean you've lost the chance to play the character. In the event of a dropout, you may re-state interest. Furthermore, you may approach the player who was granted the character and inquire about ghostwriting opportunities in supporting or roaming roles. In the event that another player lends their character to you for ghostwriting, no additional CS needs to be submitted as you are still writing the previously accepted character.

*All acceptances and reviews shall be delayed for a period of a week [seven (7) days] on the RP's initial launch. The rule of twenty-four hours to state intent will come into place after that period has expired.

All players will initially be allotted one Driving Character Concept, to begin with. However, players may have as many Roaming and Supporting Characters as they feel they can handle. These concepts may be any character from the Marvel or DC Universe. If applying as a 'Team Concept', a combination roster may be allowed at the scrutiny of the GM Team. Characters originally appearing in Manga or Anime are heavily discouraged because of their incompatibility with western superhero comics. Other comic titles discouraged are those belonging to science fiction genres such as Transformers, Star Trek, and Star Wars. We will judge all properties from outside of the Marvel and DC Universes on a case-by-case basis provided they fit the themes and tones of the game, but the above limitations are definitive.

We will grant a second Driving Character to players at the end of their first season within the game, provided they meet the following criteria. We will grant secondary concepts to players who remained consistent throughout the season, posting regularly of their own accord. The player should not be abrasive towards either the GMs or the other players, instead, inspiring the community and helping the game flourish. To summarize, players need to meet three criteria:

 • Be part of the game for a minimum of one Season
 • Post consistently over the course of the Season preceding the application
 • Contribute to the game and community positively (i.e. Comment on posts and discussions, take part in Crises, create Crossovers etc)

Players can compete for characters if an application for your desired character is posted ahead of yours and has not yet been accepted. To compete for a character, you have a twenty-four (24) hour window to state your intent to compete. The competing application(s) will then be given a seventy-two (72) hour deadline in which both players must submit their samples if they have no done so already. The GM Team will then judge the two competing applications. The winner will be selected by who the GMs believe portrays the character better and has a stronger concept. During this competition, the GMs may also vet a player's history to check for posting consistency or previous incidents of abrasive behaviours to better weigh their options.

In terms of character creation, you are free to overhaul and redesign any canon character from one of the aforementioned publishers. This means you can tell the story of the character how you believe it should be told. However, there is one major limitation, the heart and soul of the character must stay intact. The character should not be changed so much that they're unrecognizable. This means that Batman can't be a cold-blooded killer any more than Spider-Man can be a rich, well-off playboy. Every aspect of the character that isn't a key to their major identity is malleable, this can even include sex and abilities if so desired.

Absolutely no 'OOC' chatter in the In Character Thread. If you have a question or anything to explain there is an Out Of Character Thread provided. You have no excuse to make an 'OOC' comment in the IC and if done it will be heavily frowned upon. If you require a more immediate answer, don't hesitate to directly ask the GM Team or relevant player through tagging, PM or other methods.

Writing expectations for this roleplay are at least two (2) well-developed paragraphs as a minimum per post. Three (3) to five (5) paragraph posts, however, would be awesome so long as you're not simply chewing the scenery. Proper spelling and grammar are also expected but small mistakes here and there are understandable. Blatant offences will be called out.

You are required to post at least once per character within a fourteen (14) day period. There will be a post-check-in, once per week performed by the GMs in order to ensure the IC is moving consistently. Extensions will be given in extenuating circumstances. Please recognize your limitations before joining the RP, if you are unable to post once every ten days, then it's highly likely that you do not have enough time to keep up with the RP. In the event that you do miss the deadline, your character will be listed as 'inactive'. After a further week of inactivity, your character will be expelled, and dealt with as necessary in the IC, whether killed or used as needed and then discarded. This whole process is simply easier if you just let the GM know if you're unable to keep up or simply have lost interest in the RP. If you find yourself in a plot with another player and they disappear, do your best to move on without them and quickly finish the arc to the best of your ability, or ask for the help of a GM.

This is a Character-Driven RP, and as such you are encouraged and expected to take charge of your character's subplots and storylines. There will be a heavy emphasis on collaborative activities and team building as well. The GMs will be leading the RP in the traditional sense with a driving plot and will ensure the RP keeps moving however we do want to see you develop your characters and produce your own plots. However, we don't want to see you lock your character out of interaction and focus solely on your character and their 'world'. No one enjoys watching you play with yourself, it's always better to let someone else join in on the fun.

If you join this RP, if you take the time to submit an application, I'm putting my faith in you that you'll be committed to it and that the character you play will be consistent with the one in the agreed-upon CS. Personally, I have a hard time with this sometimes and I understand that things just happen. That said I’m referring to suddenly giving a character new powers with no explanation or completely changing their backstory in order to add new skills. I’m okay with changes but I’d like a heads-up first so perhaps we can work a more natural way towards these things happening. In terms of commitment, dropping out of the RP randomly for whatever reason is a pain or a GM. Simply put, it wastes my time along with the other players. If you do not think you can join and you're sure something will come up, do not join. The tendency to not care about an RP after a while? Don't join. Simple as that. I will work with you when it comes to bumps in the road. If you think you're going to be out for a couple of days, that's fine. I'll find a way to excuse you from the story or play your character. However, please let the group known as far in advance as possible. If you're going on a trip, tell me something. Do not leave me wondering where you are. Let me know so I can keep things going. I will work around you if you work with me when you can.

A spiritual successor to the superhero teams that emerged around the time of the first two world wars, the Justice League was formed in the aftermath of an alien attack on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Comprised of numerous powered individuals, the Justice League is a voluntary team built by those wishing to do right by the world. They have no jurisdiction, although some would argue this means the League also has no accountability.

Piper. No last name.

Alias:
Currently uses 'Flechette' to protect her identity.

Age:
17

Appearance:
(No Anime/Manga Pictures, everything else is fair game. Please include a written description to elaborate upon your picture. Also I should note that a costume is probably not your smartest idea as you'd be put down almost immediately.)

Abilities/Skills:
Piper possesses low-level ferrokinesis - the manipulation of metal. This ability manifests through a mutated gene that causes two important extra functions within her body: the excessive production of iron by her bone marrow, and the formulation of a bizarre compound within her blood that binds with this iron. These two functions in tandem allow Piper to create small shards and splinters of moldable metal within her blood, that she can then eject from her skin. Right now, this allows Piper two skills: throwing small dart-like splinters from her arms and hands, and pushing small shards through the surface of her skin to grant herself sharp, metal barbs.

As these shards leave Piper's skin, they leave small wounds; perhaps as a result, Piper has an unconscious defense mechanism against the damage she does to herself. As her metal passes through her skin, a minute quantity breaks off from the shard and is left behind in the sub-dermal layer, which then spreads across the small puncture and blocks bacteria from the outside, and blood from the inside, until Piper's own immune system kicks in moments later to begin healing the wound. However, this protection does nothing against outside aggression, as it requires the remnants of her own metal to react to the wound left behind.

Eventually, Piper will be able to create and eject larger shards of metal, and force them into shapes she is currently incapable of - hooks, blades, daggers - and even form it around her own fists to allow her harder hits - with a lot of time and some intense practice, she'll also be able to spread it throughout her body on a sub-dermal layer, making her incredibly durable.

Name:

Cordelia ‘Cordy’ Sloan

Alias:

N/A

Age:

27

Appearance:

Cordy is a beautiful girl. No two ways about it. Long, golden hair, big blue eyes, a body well nourished and deceptively athletic for someone who’s spent so much time in a lab coat. Anyone can see from a mile off that she hasn’t spent any time in the bad lands. She doesn’t carry the scars one would pick up there, nor the worry lines that would be accrued when every day is struggle against the odds just to survive. Her delicate fingers and manicured nails have never had to dig in the dirt just in the hopes of finding an old can of beans.

However there is something about her that suggests she’s more than just some soft Presidium girl, an indescribable yet indelible quality. It might be the fierce intelligence that resides in her gaze, or the confident, almost arrogant way she holds her self. Perhaps it’s the cool indifference she pay’s to any obstacle that plants itself in her path, as if even the most major of setbacks are no more than minor nuisances to her. Whatever it is, it’s evident for anyone with the wit to see it that there’s an iron to Cordy.

Abilities/Skills:

Really bloody smart. Making herself a supersuit ala Ironman before she got thrown into the slammer. (Suit confiscated when she is thrown into prison. Side mission for Cordy is getting it back)

Backstory:

Does it matter who Cordelia's parents are? After all, she doesn't know, so why should you? Just like every other child born in the Presidium she was parted from her birth parent's at an early age, long before she could ever make any kind of emotional attachment to them, and inserted into the state run orphanage (A more efficient mode of raising children, according to Lex Luthor, than the out dated 'nuclear family' option).

Secretly Cordy considers herself something of a freedom fighter, co-ordinating several rebel groups to confuse and confound the super-villain elite of the day. She does this to keep suspicions far from her real goal, the creation of a exo-skeleton super suit that would allow her to strike down the despotic tyrants who rein supreme.

(Cordy is aware that creating a suit to fight these powers is a full-hardy and non-effective way to deal with them. Political machinations would work much better, getting each leader to take down one another. However she is not only arrogant, she is also ambitious. She wants people to see her take down the tyrants so she can more easily instil herself in a leadership position once they are gone. I.E HER GOALS ARE NOT COMPLETELY ALTRUISTIC.)

Work on the suit is slow as she is forced to hire third parties to scavenge technology and designs for her from the wastelands. (Tech from the fallen tower, design schematics from old STAR lab facilities etc etc.) She is just nearing completion when she suffers a major setback. One of the scavengers she hired to get her parts is thrown into Pandemonium. To save his own hide he sells Blockbuster the story about Cordy’s work. (She didn‘t tell the scavenger about the suit, but he was sharp enough to put the dots together himself) Blockbuster commisions a daring covert raid into the Presidium to capture Cordy. She is taken back to Pandemonium, along with her research. Blockbuster is currently trying to force her to make the suit work for him, as well as recreate it so he can have an army, one that can help him conquer more territory.

Name:
Enrique Isaiah Esteban Alonso

Alias:
The Ghost of The Batman

Age:
25

Appearance:

Enrique has characteristically dark, curly hair and peach toned skin. He has a thin face that comes to a pointed chin. His brown eyes are small, seeming to take up no space at all. Right beneath them are his high cheekbones, just above his pointed nose, shaped like an arrowhead. In general he wears white T-shirts and khaki pants.

Abilities/Skills:
Enrique is very strong and physically fit. He is also agile and quick on his feet. These come from needing them to survive. With a choice between fight or flight, he will usually choose flight. Living in the dangerous superprison, he has learned to run away very effectively, climbing gates and ignoring deterrents like barbed wire. In time, these skills could be reversed to make him effective at pursuit on foot as well as combat. But at the moment, he is a clumsy fighter, which adds to the vicious cycle of growing more skilled at escape.

He has a very gifted intelligence and great degree of creativity, which are both often underestimated because of racial prejudice. He has a superb attention to detail which he's used to set up several elaborate shows, pretending to be the spirit of the long dead Batman through use of rigged microphones and recordings, preset traps, and smoke pellets. He has no general supplies besides regular tools (Utility Knife, Screwdrivers, Wire Strippers, etc.). Additionally, he's used dummies and disguised mannequins to present a warped version of the Batman's silhouette.

Backstory:
Enrique Isaiah Esteban Alonso was the son of Miguel Esteban Cortez & Maria Alonso Guerrero, a Mexican couple who'd illegally immigrated to the United States in the first place. Unlike anyone seeking a better life, they'd come seeking fantastic amounts of money through dealings with drug traffickers. They went as far as Louisiana before the world changed forever. His parents ended up working in Jokerland, becoming only shells of their former selves. Thirteen years into the new world they had a daughter named Maria. Twelve years later they were surprised to have a son, Enrique.

Seven years after Enrique was born, his sister was beaten savagely and sold to Pandemonium for reasons unshared. This left a deep emotional scar on Enrique, who felt hopeless and lonely. For years he had a fear of the Joker, before it festered into hatred. He was made braver when one of his friends told him a story.

All throughout the shantytowns of Jokerland, legends of The Batman, a mysterious beast who'd always defeated the Joker were whispered in private. Enrique knew next to nothing of the Batman, but he found something spectacular. When his parents visited Towers Fall, taking him along, he found something in the dirt. It was a batarang. Rusty, bent, and completely misshapen. But it was proof to Enrique that hope still existed.

When they returned to Louisiana, Enrique was a new person. He set up several points around his region, using old car stereos and an old mp3 player to create an audible illusion that they were surrounded by an unreasonably fast observer. He'd stenciled out several batarangs and thrown them. He even set a few explosions with gasoline and lighters connected to strings. With some effort, and the proper setting, he convinced the local that the Southern tip of Jokerland was haunted by The Ghost of Batman.

He did not do this often or on the spot. He'd always ambushed Harlequins or set a scene to play out while he was hiding. They were small scale enough to avoid scrutiny, but public enough to make a splash. He'd often chosen to interrupt beatings, abuse of authority, or other instances of injustice.

Realizing that he could make a difference, he overestimated himself and openly insulted The Joker before being beaten and shipped to Pandemonium. But, in the time since he's been imprisoned, nine years, he's been trying to find his sister by networking. Given the setting, he's been laying low, while still occasionally performing and creating the illusion of The Bat's Ghost. Despite his showmanship, his job is blue collar as can be, making bricks.

Sample Post:
Fifty years ago in Northern Mexico, one particular water fountain had been refreshing to the people. A two foot tall ceramic wall wound around a pristine pool filled with countless coins that glittered beneath the water's surface. In it's center a beautiful carving of a marble mermaid smiled at passersby.

Fifty years later the temperature was twice as hot as it had been previously. The mermaid had been disfigured long ago. Instead of water, the fountain spat flaming oil skyward, sometimes a stray wind would carry it to an unsuspecting laborer while anyone who helped him was forced to share in his suffering.

Just outside the fountain, a taskmaster was howling at his workers to convince them to carry on in their work, making bricks out of mud. The fountain's heat was used to cook the bricks, hardening them. This was where Enrique worked every day.

"Alonso, time could shape the bricks faster than you," the overseer prodded. "I'd say these bricks must take a year, because you're weak!"

"Yes sir," he said, dragging his fingers down the sides of the nearest square of mud. He picked it up and rushed it over to the outdoor 'oven' before kicking his previous blocks away with the bottom of his shoe. When he got back, he set them to cool on a rack, picking them up using a glove shared with other workers.

While by the rack, he stole an extra moment to lay a red and black wire beneath the bricks and away from the heat. Slowly but surely, he'd been piecing together a surround sound system surrounding his workplace.

Notes:
Despite the impersonation of Batman's ghost, I don't mean for this character to be an outright Bat-like, at least in the usual sense. I don't intend for him to dress up as The Bat anytime soon, but I figured that something like this could probably happen without being a problem. In a very direct sense, he could be useful to the party for distractions.

I'm an A&W Root Beer guzzler who prefers that brand over virtually all other sodas.
