"I don't see them anywhere." I frowned. "We really needed them for this. They had the rest of the supplies that would help us survive out here." We'd been searching for almost ten minutes. A lot longer than we were supposed to be looking for them. "I guess we should get go-"

"Pssst. Hey!" A girls voiced hissed. I jumped, not knowing if that was a guard or them. I looked over my shoulder to see all four siblings making their way over. "We got the stuff!" Em was waving and smiling enthusiastically through the fence. Spencer was pushing the others through. Their bags were huge and hopefully filled with everything we needed. "You guys ready to go?" She began to climb through the hole once her siblings were in.

I turned away from the bush I was about to pull aside in my search for the others, when I heard voices coming back from the fence. Rounding a tree, I saw all four of them lined up against the fence wall, picking up their allocated bags.
"Good to see you guys. We should get moving though, we've been here long enough." I said and Nina and Joe nodded, gesturing to Em and Spencer to get on with it. "We've only got a few hours until nightfall, let's just get as far away from here as we can before we set up camp."
"Sounds good to me. Let's move." Joe ordered his siblings, and the followed accordingly.

"Cam we take a break?" Spencer asked. "I'm starving." He groaned, wrapping an arm around his stomach. His sisters rolled their eyes, looking to Joe, then back to Spencer.
"Spence, we've only been walking for two or three hours and we've taken two breaks already. Let the Plan Man call the shots. If we're good, then you gotta keep going." Joe explained.
No one looked too famished, but it would be getting dark soon. I looked up to the sky to see it turning different shades of burnt orange, dark blues, light purple, and a few other colors I couldn't quite see. I always loved watching the sunset, but it wasn't easy to see through the trees.
"We're going to be losing daylight soon." I said to Sam. "Maybe we should take a break and set up camp... But if you think we can go for another hour, lets keep going."

I looked at Daisy, then to the faces of the others. Spencer hardly even tried to look enthused at the thought of walking for another hour. We were probably far enough away to relax a little now, if we found somewhere hidden to stay we should be okay for the night.
"Okay, let's find somewhere sheltered. If we can get a fire started before dark, somewhere no one will see if they've been following us, we should be okay." I told them and the physical relief that Spencer showed almost made me laugh.
"Agreed." Em said. "Let's find a spot and get some dinner started."

"Alright. That's fine with me." I nodded. I stopped in my tracks and spun in a slow circle, looking for a decent place to make camp. It all looked the same to me. Nothing significant looked like it could help us. A cave or something would be great cover for the night, but I had no clue if we'd be able to find one or not.
"We've got a little somethin' over here." Nina said after a few minutes of searching. She nodded over towards an area surrounded completely by trees. Most of which had branches that almost touched the ground. It was almost like a weeping willow. "That should cover us for the night." She said with a smile. "Unless someone found somethin' better."

"Looks good to me." Em said as she marched over and began dumping her bags beside the base of the largest tree.
"C'mon Spence. You can help me find some wood." Joe said and nudged Spencer's arm, who looked increasingly disgruntled at the thought of having to move again. With a huff, Spencer ditched his bags and followed Joe off through the trees.
"Alright. What did you guys manage to grab from the kitchens?" I asked turning to Nina and Emma, as I too rid my aching shoulders of my bags.

"We got our hands on some fruit, canned soup, canned stew, canned sardines, found a few bags of jerky, aaaand." Em began to trail off as she pulled food from the bag and sat it down on the ground "That's it. Unless Spencer grabbed more in his bag."
"I grabbed cookies, bread, peanut butter, and crackers." Spencer spoke up. "Choose whatever you like." He smiled.

I sat my bag down and I listened to the foods being listed off. I turned my nose up when I heard the mention of sardines. Those were always gross and they smelled horrible. Everything else sounded decent. "Could you toss me a can of stew? Beef stew if you have it." I took a seat and watched as a can of soup rolled my way, stopping at my feet.

I nodded. "Not too bad guys. I could really go for a decent apple right now if you've got one." I smiled as Nina reached into her bag and pulled out a deep red apple.
"Perfect." I said before she chucked it over to me, as soon as I caught it I knew it was going to be a juicy and crunchy apple, just how I liked it. "Thanks."
I sat down against one of the trees nearby and as I took my first bite, I fully realized our situation. We were free. Not necessarily safe by any means, but we were free. And that was all that mattered right now.
For a few moments, I just enjoyed it. The delicious apple, the darkening night sky, the mutters of the Em and Joe as they returned with wood and started a fire.

"So, is everyone good?" I asked. "That was a helluva hike through the woods." I cracked a smile and scooted towards the fresh fire Joe and Em had made.
I placed my stew near the edge of the fire in an attempt to heat it up. No one likes cold food... Even if you are running for you life in the woods.
"Glad we're safe now though. I couldn't bare to stay there any long-" I heard very faint explosions in the distance. Gunshots could also be heard if you were quiet enough. What I was hearing had to be coming from camp. The small invasion of our previous base had begun.

I looked toward the camp we'd just escaped from. "We're lucky we got out of there when we did." I said in regards to the explosions.
All I could think about now were the people we had left behind. The good ones. We didn't know who they were, how could we? But it was enough to create the feeling of guilt in the pit of my stomach knowing we could have helped them. Hopefully the damage wouldn't be too great and the right people would get away.

I felt bad that we'd left so many people behind. But we couldn't help them all. We had to save out own butts. We couldn't have saved them. It just wasn't possible... I don't think.
"Yeah... Glad we got out when we did." I nudged at my stew with my foot, pushing it closer to the flames. "Welp. When should we head out in the morning?" I asked, changing the subject.

"As early as possible I reckon." Joe piped up, eager, I think, for the change of subject. "We wouldn't want to linger around for too long. Personally, the further we get away from this place, the better I'll feel about this all."
"Yeah well, it's also a matter of finding somewhere safe to go. I mean, do we continue in the war? Or do we find our way back home?" Em asked, raising a matter I honestly hadn't even thought about.

"Oh. I uh- I don't know." I grabbed my can of food and almost dropped it in the process, wiping my hands on my pants from the burn.
"Hot, huh?" Spencer snickered as he popped some granola into his mouth. I rolled my eyes and grabbed the can with the edge of my shirt, getting back on topic.
"I don't think it's like the old days anymore. Can we just leave and go home? They've gotten a little more strict. But I'm willing to sneak home if you guys are. I miss my mom." I admitted.

"No one may know we even escaped after what's happening at the camp now. They may just think we died in the chaos." I said spinning my half eaten apple between two fingers. "Could be the perfect chance to get away from it all."
"Yeah, but I mean, is there still a place for us in the battle?" Em started hesitantly. "Is there something we can do that could potentially lead on to the end of this war? Maybe it doesn't have to be so hands on, as I don't think any of us are particularly equipped for that..."
"What could we do though Em? We wouldn't know where to start, what to do? How would we even find out that stuff? Besides I want to keep all of you please, if we have the chance to get out of here now, then let's. I promised mom I'd return each and everyone of you to her. And that may very well include you two now." Nina said nodding to Daisy and I. "You've helped us out of here, I'm sure she'd like to say thank you."

I gave Nina a small smile, shaking my head and placing my hands in my lap. "Oh don't worry about me, I'll be alright." I assured her.
"Let's say we all decide to break away from this and go home. Which way is home? Did anyone grab a map on the way out? We couldn't find one." I nodded to Sam. "And if they think we're dead, all of our parents will be getting two soldiers at their door and a note confirming our death. I can't put my parents through that again."

"But when you show up all alive and well, they'll think it's a bloody miracle. They'll be so happy, especially when they understand why." Nina said giving Daisy a wee nudge with her elbow. "Imagine their faces when they open up the door to you, please record it and send it to me."
"Look," I said, grabbing everyone's attention, "let's just find a town or even a gas station. Somewhere we can relax a bit, once there we can find a map and figure ourselves out from there."

"He's right." I finally took a sip or my stew, careful not to cut my mouth on the can. It was much cooler now and not too bad to hold. I only wished I had a spoon to stir it.
"My gosh, that's good." I whispered to myself before taking another gulp, chewing chunks of beef and vegetables every now and then.
"We reach some civilization first, then make more plans. Let's just eat and get some sleep."

"I'm cool with that." Spencer added with a mouth full of food.
Joe snorted and whacked Spencer on the back with a brotherly kind of touch. "I'm glad kiddo, there's nothing like keeping you happy."
Em smirked behind her can of soup as Spencer coughed and spluttered.
"Alright children, time for bed. The earlier we get to sleep, the earlier we wake up. And we all know Em can take her sweet time in the morning." Nina said as she started to pull herself up.
Em blushed and avoided everyone's gaze. "I like sleep, sue me." She muttered thinking no one could hear her. I smiled and she caught my eye, making her cheeks grow crimson.

"Awesome," I finished up my stew and sat the can down beside me. "I'm getting sleepy anyway." I pulled my backpack close to me and propped it up as a pillow. I curled up on my side and crossed my arms over my chest. "Good night, everyone! First one up has to wake us all up... Good luck with that." I trailed off. "Good night." I said again, looking up at the stars that shined bright above us.

We all said our respectable goodnight's and lay down on the ground, using whatever we could for comfort and warmth.
Tonight was the beginning of a long journey. To home or to somewhere else entirely. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go back home, I wasn't sure there was a place for me there.
But I knew I wasn't cut out for war.
Maybe somewhere new, somewhere no body knew who I was would be a good decision, where I could start over.
It took a while before I managed to drift off too sleep, the echoes of the distant explosions were hard to ignore.
